CD/DVD drive {E} will not read 'install ' disc.

I am trying to install a new "HP Officejet 6300" but cannot get my disc drive to read the "install" disc. When I insert the disc NOTHING happens.

[I have a HP Pavillion 553x Windows XP,5 YEARS OLD].

The instruction sheet says to by-pass the MICROSOFT ADD HARDWARE SCREEN if it comes up and use the HP cd "install" disc.

So, I refer to the set up instruction and it says:

"If the startup screen does not appear, double-click MY COMPUTER, double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click SETUP.EXE."

However, when I try that route no start-up.exe comes up anywhere and everything locks up and I cannot get the computer to eject the dang disc. I have had to unplug the computer twice when it would not respond to anything including ctrl, alt, delete. and would not shut down.

Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong, and how i can get this hardware installed...........thanks so much

You might try this: With the cd in the drive click start then run. In the run box type d: setup then click ok. This assumes that your cd drive is your d drive.

bob414 thanks for the suggestion but it didn't work...the disk sounded like it was spinning, starting up and slowing down, but nothing happened...and again i had trouble getting that window to close down and trouble getting the disk out.

If you have a 16x DVDRW it must have the capability to write to both +/- formats. Only very old models had compatibility problems with the two formats. Can your DVD drive recognize any disk at all? Try any movie or software application. If the drive recognizes the disk then it's either a software setting (is smartstart looking for the correct drive, it could be set to 'virtual' drive, which you don't want) or the problem is with the media. Is the disk already used? What brand is it? Have you ever successfully copied files onto a dvd with this drive? If so, was it using this brand of blank media? What format are the files from your camcorder in? Do they need to be converted? How big are they? I suggest you get the full Nero Burning Rom over the free Smartstart. You might want to include the full specs of your computer with your reply. It may make diagnosing the problem easier if we know what your are working with. Klaa2

Did you try more than one CD in both drives? Have you tried a music CD? When you insert the CD/DVD does the LED light come on on the front of the CD or DVD player? Was any work done inside the case at about the same time? One wonders if the 80 wire ribbon cable may be off the motherboard, assuming both are on the secondary connector as master and slave.

I tried my first (and only) DVD program. Asimov's Planetarium. It was a little jerky. A couple of years back I increased to 1.2 GB of RAM. Does anyone think I should get more? Thanks, again, to all. Gene Ah, that age old question to which there is not a definite answer. You said this computer is 6 year old so anything you buy today for it might not be useable in the next machine. Memory is dirt cheap these days, however you have 1.2 gigs and if you have XP then 2gigs is the limit assuming your motherboard can accept that. It should be, but wisdom suggests to check first. How many sticks and what size are the ones installed? Probably a 1gig and a 256 meg A better graphics/video card would work wonders but again, If you current motherboard has only PCI (not PCIe) or AGP the new card will be no use in a newer machine later on.

Have you tried more than one CD? And more than one type? If for example you are trying a music CD now try inserting you XP operating system CD and see what pops up. Does the activity light on the front of the DVD player come on when you close the drawer with a CD inside and does the speed of the flashing increase after a few seconds of activity?

You can download the softwares and driver from HP, although it may be a very large download... up to 300mb ?

Or better yet they have some trouble shooting steps for problems on install.

Right click on Start, click Explore. Now look down the left side and click on the E:\ to highlight it. Now do the contents of the CD appear listed on the right side?

If so double click on the Setup.exe file and watch the front of your tower to see if the CD activity light comes on.

Have you tried inserting a music CD in the drawer to verify the player is still working?

I wanted to thank each of you for your suggestions about solving my problem. I tried each of your suggestions but without success, I wound up calling tec support and talked with a young man in the Philippines, he was very patient and got me through the process and I got the printer installed.

Word of caution, read carefully the instructions when installing new hardware and when it says not to hook up the machine to the usb port before being told to do so during the installation process, DON'T DO IT. I was careless and it caused me a lot of aggravation........
