Dr Web anti-virus link checker question

On another post, someone recommended this FF plug-in.

I'd be willing to give it a try, but am wondering if it's compatable with my old W/98 system. Anyone know?

Yes, it will work. I tried it on my test system with Windows 98SE and Firefox 2.0. HTH.

That's great news, Terry, thanks. I really hate to give up my old PC. Maybe this will let me keep it going a while longer once AVG goes away.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. we have been dealing with this nasty thing daily here on the computer help forum and on many other tech help forums I work on. It is on many legit sites, it gets into the website through a "hole" and even the website owner has no idea it is on their site infecting their visitors. There are 2 very good free programs that so far have been getting rid of it completely. I will provide the links here for you, if you have any problem with this thing head over to the computer help area here and we will help you with it. Also I will give a link here that is excellent in explaining just how this thing works. these 2 free programs are ones you can install and use weekly to make sure your pc is staying clean, but always update them before running a scan. @bengz6westmd "I was prb'ly visiting it on Windows" If I understand correctly, the sites had their databases (on their computers) broken into. Nothing you, an AV, or a browser could have done to prevent that. (just use reasonably complex passwords and don't reuse them on other sites, especially your bank, eBay, Amazon, etc.) I assume they used a mysql injection attack? At Houzz (and probably the same at the mint forum), the passwords were well encrypted and "salted" (to make them unique) so it would likely take an unreasonably long time to crack any but the simplest passwords. I've never tried to hack, ethically or otherwise so I don't fully understand, so may not be getting it totally correct. I run mysql (and apache2 and php) in Linux for my own use. Is it vulnerable? Maybe. It's kept up-to-date but I'm not a security minded coder, just an amateur, so possibly my code has holes. But it's not exposed to the web. Not that anyone would care to dump my movie database anyway. :-) Off topic but... If you're adventurous and/or bored and have php-cli:Output looks something like this: Not exactly what I use but taken from it. Don't pass a length and get 32 characters. Pass it a length and get that many characters. Characters are taken from the "chars" array which can be modified to include only characters that most sites accept.

an alternative for you with old versions of windows is the Kaspersky Rescue Disc. This is a version of the very well known Kaspersky virus scan which runs from a cd, you put it in your cd drawer then boot up the pc so it boots from the cd, you then run the virus scan from the cd. It works with all versions of windows. The thing is that you have to have a cd burner on your pc that will burn an ISO disc, if you don't there are free ones available. You have to go burn the latest version of the disc each time you want to run your scan so that you know you have the latest virus definitions. This is also handy for those that can not get into their windows to run a scan, you can usually boot the pc from the cd even when you can not boot into windows. This is just for running a scan this does NOT provide any type of real time protection at all this just lets you run a scan on your pc with out installing any programs.
It would be much better to find some type of real time protection that still works on 98.

You download the ISO file to your pc then you take that ISO file and burn it to a cd using the ISO burn setting. YOU must use the ISO setting in your burner. AN ISO file is an image file and will not work unless burned as such.

check your current cd burner it probably does do ISO burning most of the major ones like nero etc do.
