norton anti virus

Have just downloaded the current 2007 Norton and it has slowed up my computer. I have read this is a problem and want to use something other than Norton. My current subscription expires in 30 days. Any recommendations?

There are free antivirus programs that do the job well. The two I see recommended here are AVG and Avast. I have used AVG for several years and it has done the job for me. You can download it from this page.

Jane, I have the free version, and I never tell it to scan. It has a screensaver that self-installs, and after my computer is idle for the time I have set for the screen saver to activate, it automatically starts scanning. The background is the shooting stars thingy, and a little box moves around recording the number of files scanned. When it is finished, it tells you, and the screen saver part just keeps on shooting stars at you. I don't even recall ever trying to configure anything about Avast, and it scans my incoming e-mails. I think I did check for it not to scan outgoing ones. You do have to register it, but that's free. I find it just sits down in the bottom tray and does its thing, and every morning shortly after I go online, a little box pops up and a male voice announces that it has updated. I find the interface of AVG rather clunky, so that's why I stopped using it, although I think it's also a fine AV program.

I have the exact same computer and I run several spyware scanners along with Avast anti-virus. No problems at all. One program I highly recommend that combines anti-spyware, temp file cleaner, registry cleaner, and a couple of other things is Advanced Windows Care. I keep it updated and run it about once every 10 days or so. It is not an anti-virus program. Give it a try and see how you like it. The link is for the free personal version. I agree with acraftylady. I used lots of the free software and wasn't satisfied that they were good enough in today's world. I also ran a good software that wasn't free and had lots of trouble with their updates. They were rated as one of the best. I decided to try the much-maligned Norton products and haven't been happier. No troubles and very nice customer support. Piasano, as suggested here by another, use Norton's "chat" tool to work with this company. If necessary Norton will be able to lock into your pc to check it and see for themselves where the problem is coming from. It's a safe tool and they will unlock and break all contact with you when they resolve your PC's problem. Along with others in the industry, top Norton security personnel works with our government to detect and resolve hacker and other security problems.

I found out the email is legit. I called checkfree from the # on their website and was told if anyone was on the site during the specific hours mentioned in OP then they could be sujected to a hacker. I think I was that day, but can't remember the time. Anyway, checkfee only plans to provide people with a free one year McAfee virus program (big deal). I was told many people are not aware that if they pay their bills on line, the on line places may even use checkfree to pay the bills, unbeknown to you, which is why you "think" you don't have an account with checkfree, but you do. I found this out when I ask why people who don't have an account with them are getting the email. It doesn't quite make sense why someone's bill would be paid through checkfree if they didn't ask it to be via signing up. Interesting!!!! The woman I spoke with wasn't too terribly helpful, was aware of the issue, and frankly, didn't seem to care much. I've run my anti virus programs and luckily nothing came up. I've checked and will continue to check my accounts to ensure there's no fowl play. I have, through my credit card company, a faud package, so if anything happens to my accounts, I'm covered. Besides, this and changing PWs, there's not much else anyone can do.

I tried to down load the free ones and messed my puter up bad. Someone told me it was because I hadnt completely un installed my old one,,,so you might beware,,good luck!

Here's a suggestion on how to do this without problems:
1)Download whichever AV program you decide you want.
2)SAVE it to desktop or a folder where you keep downloads.
3)Go OFFLINE and uninstall Norton.
4)While OFFLINE, install the new AV program by double-clicking the setup file you downloaded.
5)Go ONLINE and update the new program.

You should have no problems with conflicts if you follow this sequence.

Boy am pleased I did a search on GW in this forum. I to am getting rid of Norton and wanting to install AVG. "grandms" you answered all the questions I had plus in language I understand "thank you"

Everything went fine Norton was complicated to get all out of the computer it was hiding all over the place.

After uninstalling Norton in the control panel add/remove, you may want to run the Norton Removal Tool

Thanks so much for the great info and especially the detailed instructions on setting up new anti virus software. It is so great that knowledgeable people are available and willing to help. Although this was my first posting to this forum, I have been reading it for years.

I used to be a school teacher, so I guess I'm used to giving detailed, step by step instructions. Randy's suggestion about using the Norton Removal Tool is a good one, because Norton hides files and folders all over the place.
