norton anti virus

Have just downloaded the current 2007 Norton and it has slowed up my computer. I have read this is a problem and want to use something other than Norton. My current subscription expires in 30 days. Any recommendations?

There are free antivirus programs that do the job well. The two I see recommended here are AVG and Avast. I have used AVG for several years and it has done the job for me. You can download it from this page.

This Looks like what you have it is a network worm so that is how it spreads through the network the only difference is the letter this one is (BVK) and yours is (BKV) I'm sure they do the same thing, you can see all the registry changes it makes, and it appears to disable some software and then tries to connect to a server. W32/Sdbot-BVK is a worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform. W32/Sdbot-BVK can spread via network shares protected by weak passwords, or by exploiting common vulnerabilities, including: LSASS (MS04-011), RPC-DCOM (MS04-012), PNP (MS05-039), and ASN.1 (MS04-007). W32/Sdbot-BVK runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels. W32/Sdbot-BVK includes functionality to access the internet and communicate with a remote server via HTTP. When first run W32/Sdbot-BVK copies itself to \netbtd.exe. The file netbtd.exe is registered as a new system driver service named "NetBTD", with a display name of "NetBTD(ntbtd)" and a startup type of automatic, so that it is started automatically during system startup. Registry entries are created under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBTD\ W32/Sdbot-BVK sets the following registry entries, disabling the automatic startup of other software: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Messenger Start 4 HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteRegistry Start 4 HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TlntSvr Start 4 Registry entries are set as follows: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate DoNotAllowXPSP2 1 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole EnableDCOM N HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa restrictanonymous 1 Registry entries are created under: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\ HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile\ HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile\ RSS:Atom Get reports on the latest virus threats delivered to your computer

I hope you used the Norton Removal tool to remove it and thus making sure all NORTON files are gone I can't tell you how many times folks remove NORTON only to have stragglers left behind... It's a fact Norton does not run well on some machines, their is also user confusion using NORTON correctly.. It's also true NORTON is the best for virus file type infections. Pros & cons. On one of the sites I belong to we have a NORTON rep assisting users that would be SWI FORUMS. I have also heard that the NORTON 2008 has gotten better as far as taking up space and using resources.

I agree with acraftylady. I used lots of the free software and wasn't satisfied that they were good enough in today's world. I also ran a good software that wasn't free and had lots of trouble with their updates. They were rated as one of the best. I decided to try the much-maligned Norton products and haven't been happier. No troubles and very nice customer support. Piasano, as suggested here by another, use Norton's "chat" tool to work with this company. If necessary Norton will be able to lock into your pc to check it and see for themselves where the problem is coming from. It's a safe tool and they will unlock and break all contact with you when they resolve your PC's problem. Along with others in the industry, top Norton security personnel works with our government to detect and resolve hacker and other security problems.

I tried to down load the free ones and messed my puter up bad. Someone told me it was because I hadnt completely un installed my old one,,,so you might beware,,good luck!

Here's a suggestion on how to do this without problems:
1)Download whichever AV program you decide you want.
2)SAVE it to desktop or a folder where you keep downloads.
3)Go OFFLINE and uninstall Norton.
4)While OFFLINE, install the new AV program by double-clicking the setup file you downloaded.
5)Go ONLINE and update the new program.

You should have no problems with conflicts if you follow this sequence.

Boy am pleased I did a search on GW in this forum. I to am getting rid of Norton and wanting to install AVG. "grandms" you answered all the questions I had plus in language I understand "thank you"

Everything went fine Norton was complicated to get all out of the computer it was hiding all over the place.

After uninstalling Norton in the control panel add/remove, you may want to run the Norton Removal Tool

Thanks so much for the great info and especially the detailed instructions on setting up new anti virus software. It is so great that knowledgeable people are available and willing to help. Although this was my first posting to this forum, I have been reading it for years.

I used to be a school teacher, so I guess I'm used to giving detailed, step by step instructions. Randy's suggestion about using the Norton Removal Tool is a good one, because Norton hides files and folders all over the place.
