Need shower control help!

I'm new to this and am getting very confused about the different shower controls. We are going to have just a shower, no tub, and will have two or three shower devices-- a wall shower, a rainhead shower, and maybe a handheld.

So, what is the difference between a thermostatic valve and a diverter? Is the first just for temperature control and the second just directing which spout the water comes from? Do they make one control that does both? I can't fathom how you'd have two controllers - one for temp and one for direction.

I see some diverters are for two outlets, some are for three. Do we have to know before we order whether we want two or three? Or can we order a three outlet diverter, and cap off the third one if we don't end up doing a hand held shower?

I've looked for information about these, but can't seem to find information about these things on line-- they just show their products, rather than explaining how they work. Can someone here enlighten me?

Thanks so much!
