? re new bosch dw

i'm still figuring it out...it's our first dw ever. (and we've been married almost 20 years!).

bosch ecosense Bosch Evolution 300 Series SHE43P05UC

1. when i'm done with one load, shouldn't i be able to just hit the button to go again? but i have to hit the on/off button and then it chooses autowash. i'm a little confused.

2. ok, i was warned. and it's true. the dishes are semi-wet when they are done. especially the top rack. i'm using ecover dishwasher detergent but no rinse aid of any kind. does the rinse aid help to open up to a dishwasher of dryer dishes? i don't mind the damp, but we have new hardwood floors and my husband is freaked that we'll have drippy watery dishes that will drip onto the new floors. makes me think i bought the wrong dishwasher but there's nothing i can do about that now...paid for and installed.

so if anyone could help me on these two issues, i'd be mighty grateful.

should - and reality are often very different.

rinse aid is pretty much mandatory in a euro dishwasher.

antss: while i'm a pretty slammin' cook, i have never ever had a dishwasher before. what does the rinse aid do? i thought rinse aid was so that your glasses were cleaner...but they are plenty clean with the ecover dishwasher detergent. will the rinse-aid make them dry?

and, secondarily, if that is true, is the ecover rinse aid effective?

This is going to be variable and it depends on the temperature of the incoming water. I *know* this for a fact. When my Bosch DW was (re)installed after the remodel, I got a few facts confused and I asked the plumber to connect the DW to the cold water tap. The cycle lengths turned out to be about 150 or 160mins which was far longer than it used to be pre-remodel. So, I had him switch it back to the hot. Well, it dropped to about 107 minutes or so thereupon. Recently, I was testing something at one of our taps and I realized that the hot water at our taps was about 130deg or 140deg and who know *what* at the hot water heater! That was far far too high and I lowered it so that it is now 118degrees at the hot water heater. The DW cycles are back up now and I think we are about 120minutes at this point for a normal wash. Note that the DW keeps a running average of past cycle lengths and as a result the only times I am reporting are those gleaned from the displays the DW countdown timer shows when I select a mode. I do not know the actual times that the runs last as I've never really kept track of the unit once I get it going. As a result, I do not know if when I say 120minutes or so that the DW running average computation has converged on the right running time or if it is still computing up and therefore if my actual running times are even longer. Also, that the DW cleans excellently - it does not seem have impacted cleaning performance whether the DW was connected to the stone cold, the terribly hot or the now intermediate. So, my advice would be to check your incoming temperature as that could be a primary driver. If you are indeed connected to the hot water line, and you are *otherwise* comfortable with that temperature, I wouldn't necessarily raise the hot water temperature. Alternatively, you may have a hot water line but have a tankless HW heater which to all intents and purposes to the DW may well be just a cold water connection! I'd just live with it - this is the flavour of energy conserving DWs these days. Hope this helped - a lot of anecdotal information but I just wanted to show that longer cycle times (> 100mins) is de rigueur now and that depending on the water temperature there can be a lot of variability in the wash durations.

That makes a lot of sense. I replaced the Bosch after 2 weeks (the odor was one of the reasons) and everything had been done correctly. And I tried all the fixes the Bosch help line told me. Got a Kitchenaid in its place and not once has that happened. I got so tired of folks saying that I must be doing something wrong. Nice to be validated like this. I don't understand why others don't have the same odor. But maybe they just don't notice it like I did.

I'm reading between the lines that you think this unit is loud. I think your expectations may have been too high. No DW is silent. Your unit is entry level and has a louder rating than most of the Bosch units people coo about round here. The gurggle in the sink is as mrtime says: not dependent on the DW. It's a result of a less than ideal drain system from your plumber. We specify that DW's be hooked up to their own separate p-trap which will eliminate this noise and complaint. For 300 bucks what were you really expecting, dishwasher nirvana? There are few units in the market place that cost near or even less than this and none are as good as the unit you now have.

I really like our 800 series Bosch DW. It washes dishes better than any DW I've used in forty years, and I love the third rack for flatware. I check our filter once a week or once every other week, and it definitely needs cleaning by then. The only "negative" is that I have to keep the door propped open or it smells really badly from whatever is on the dishes. We do not pre-wash or heavily rinse dishes before loading, just scrape and rinse the chunks of food off because it's not a garbage disposal and my hubby finally is getting that into his head. What works best for the odor issue is that I run it every night. Even pots and casserole dishes go in there and come out brilliantly clean.

I think your machine defaults to the recommended cycle for everyday dishwashing. That is why when you touch the power button, Autowash is preselected.

Rinse aid is required to obtain decently dried dishes with Bosch as well as just about any energy efficient dishwasher nowadays. I'm sure a bottle was included in the machine along with the instruction manual. Also, you should see labels on the machine door and dispenser calling attention to this important information.

The drop of rinse aid dispensed in the final rinse; harmlessly conditions the hot, clean rinse water to drain off the items in the machine, leaving just a thin film of water to evaporate during the unheated dry cycle, resulting in much drier dishes. In hard water areas it reduces spots & film on the dishes and the machine interior.

Take a few minutes to check your owners manual. It is all in there.

We have a similar model and noticed dryer dishes using a rinse aid. I alternate between ecover tablets and 7th Gen. liquid. The rinse I use is a house brand at WF and works well. There are several eco friendlier versions of rinse aid than the Finish product that came with the DW. And yes it is worth it to use something without phosphates. The research is starting to become clear about the link between runoff water including that and other chemicals and the problems in our oceans.

1. When you say 'finished', do you mean it has stopped running? Or do you mean that you have waited for the drying cycle to complete? If the drying cycle is not complete then it will want to continue the cycle after you open it.

Dishwashers are different. Mine doesn't have an On/Off switch. It has the cycle selection buttons and a 'go' button. What you're doing may be perfectly normal for you.

thanks everyone and thank you for the rinse aid explanation. i decided that one sample bottle of finish rinse aid which came with the machine wouldn't hurt us (i am a bcancer survivor so i try to make good decisions about chemical products (are there good decisions re chemical products???)) and i put it in. i'm going to look tonite when i run it because i know just how very wet it was without it. and then, if it works, i'll go find a bottle of the ecover rinse aid and try that...it seems to be a little more eco-friendly.
