Under Kerdi - need quick answer pls

Demo'd our shower area yesterday, working on the floor today. Found a contractor who will work with me, allowing me to do some of the work and he doing what I cannot like plumbing.

Need to go buy supplies, confused on what to put under the kerdi. I have a 3 wall alcove with tub/shower combo in it. One wall (end of tub) is an exterior, other 2 are interior.

I read here about cement board, hardibacker and drywall under the kerdi and folks recommending all. John Bridge forum same thing. So please help me and tell me which I should install. If I use cement board, can I build the niches out of drywall since it is a bit easier for me to work with?

Found a septic vent pipe right smack dab in the middle of where I planned on putting a large 30" wide x 12" tall niche to hold all the stuff from our 3 kids. Revised plan will include two niches each being 14" wide and 12" tall and a soap dish niche.
