Family dinner with my dad

It's been over a year since my dad had to go into assisted living and now he is in the Memory Center for Alzheimer's patients. Although he has good days and not so good days, he still seems to recognize most of us most of the time. Last weekend was his 88th birthday but due to the Labor Day holiday, we could not all celebrate the day.

My mom planned a family lunch for today at her patio home which is just around the corner from the Center. She signed Dad out and wheeled him in his wheelchair down the couple of blocks to the home they shared. Daddy seemed to get in the party spirit and was alert and smiling, even laughing out loud at times. With my sisters, BIL, three grandsons and my parents, we were only missing my niece and other nephew. We had beef tenderloin, corn and black bean salad, 24 hour salad, baked apricot casserole, potato casserole and chocolate cake with ice cream. Daddy ate very well and after lunch his three grandsons and my mom wheeled him back to the Center for his nap. It was a very good day and we hope to do this again in the future, maybe for the holidays.

Kelley, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I can't say I understand the pain you are going through (no one can because everyone's grief is different). And I haven't lost my father, But all I can say is that I am glad you were able to spend the last moments/seconds of his life with him & say goodbye. So many people don't get that opporunity. It is precious time. I held my little boy in my arms as he breathed his last breath & I am so grateful I had the chance to hold him & tell him how much I loved him as I had to say goodbye before he was taken away. As heartbreaking as it was (and how that 2 weeks in the hospital will live with me forever), I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It was so hard for me to get out of bed for a long time after. And everyday when I look at the clock and it says 8:23am (the time he died). I relive that moment again. Just take each moment at a time & do what you can do to get through. As hard as it is to believe it right now, it will get easier to get through each day. I didn't believe it when everyone said it at first but it does get easier. I still have days that are worse than others but I also have more days where I can be happy & know my son is with me wherever I go & wouldn't want to see me sad. Keep in touch here..This place helped me right from the beginning. I was so glad to find it & glad you did too! Take care of yourself!

Lucy, Sylvia is exactly right..FDHs son is probably embarrassed, and angry if he was disiplined for what he did with the fist raising, but what are your expectations when you marry, FSS has to visit his dad at grandmas ? He will have to come to your home eventually, FDH needs to mend these fences between you and your sons and his son, not run off to grandmas...Also does FDH want Ex at the family functions? Why doesnt he tell her, stopping in is OK, but dont wear out your welcome, this is MY family, not yours... I have stopped at Exs family wakes usually before the home opens, to drop a card and sign the book, that way they know I cared enough to come, but didnt stick around to cause drama...I have had major problems with DH s ex coming to funerals, geez, I thought she d outlast the grieving spouse, as far as her staying power. DH and I just ignore her. But as far as sons needing support, DH was in the hospital, FSDIL asked if I called Ex to come, I was incredulous!!!!DH didnt want her there, but she was more than welcome to sit in the parking lot and give them hugs every half hour or so, if she chose to...Good luck with thse beauties, I feel your pain....

I just read your reply on Alisande's post about your person of the year being your kids and you mentioned they are 22 and 21, so I had to come back here and look again. Holy cow!! I thought they were about 18 and 15. Let's hope those youthful looks carry on with them for many years LOL!!

I'm pretty sure the apricot casserole was something like this one. A good side dish for ham, turkey, or any meal where you want something unusual.

Apricot Casserole

Ingredients

* 2 cans (15 ounces each) apricot halves
* 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, divided
* 1 cup packed brown sugar
* 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 1-1/3 cups crushed butter-flavored crackers (about 36 crackers) - Ritz crackers

Directions

* Drain apricots, reserving 3/4 cup juice. Place apricots in a greased 11-in. x 7-in. baking dish. melt 1/2 cup butter; add the brown sugar, flour and reserved juice. Pour over apricots.
* Bake, uncovered, at 350Â° for 20 minutes. melt remaining butter; toss with crackers crumbs. Sprinkle over top. Bake 15-20 minutes longer or until golden brown. Yield: 6-8 servings.

You can drag them out 20 years from now and smile. Trust me on this.
