Itunes 7 erased all my music!

I just opened up Itunes to play some music and all of my files (about 30 purchased from Itunes and 15 of my own music) and libraries are gone. I didn't do anything to make this happen, and they weren't backed up. Some of them are stored on my Ipod Shuffle, but if it auto updates when I plug it in, it will be empty.

Does anyone know what could have happened and if there is a way to recover the music or is it gone forever? I've been searching the net for people with the same problem, but I can't find any answers, just other people asking the same thing. Apparently this is quite a problem! It did NOT automatically create a folder in My Music as it did for some other people who have experienced this problem.

go to this link to the forums there and ask they are the most knowledgeable about those things.

Just one of the many reasons I refuse to use itunes and ipod they do this kind of stuff to often.

This brings up an interesting situation. Anyone know if Vacuumfreak would get those files back if he/she restored the computer to an earlier date? I assume they would. If so then vacuumfreak should not open the program first but instead use Windows Explorer and create another folder and copy the music there so he/she has 2 instances to protect that music.

Rhodyman - I'm no computer expert, and I know there are other combinations that work for forum users, but unlike many who have made changes, I use IE7. Windows Defender free program for spyware. Symantec for virus protection. In Fall 2003, I bought Stop the Pop Up by Sureshot, a one time only fee of $20. The tech at my ISP said they had trialed 30, and this one worked flawlessly ( they don't sell it, so nothing to gain by the recommendation) I see no ads, banners, not ever a single solitary pop up on any site I visit including this one. No sounds. I understand your complaint about the advertising, you'd think they'd realize it would make potential customers not want to buy the product rather than make them consider it Here is a link that might be useful: Stop the Pop Up

I personally would not suggest using Itunes unless you are using related products it can cause problems if not. I would do the simple method Copy music files from an audio CD Insert the Audio CD and start Windows Media Player. If WMP is in Skin mode, press CTRL+1 to view WMP in Full mode. Click Copy from CD. Or, on the File menu, you can click Copy, click Copy from Audio CD, and then choose the drive from which you want to copy. Click to select each audio file that you want to copy. By default, all files that you have not already copied are selected. Click Copy Music. This copies the file into the My Documents\My Music folder by default. another very simple method where you do not even have to use windows media player is, you pop in your CD into your computer's CD drive, it should pop-up a window asking what you want to do with it. Open the contents of the CD and you'll see all the songs on the CD. If a window does not pop up and the CD starts playing, stop it and go to> Start -> My Computer -> the CD drive with your music CD to see the contents of the CD (you might have to right click on that drive and select explore to view contents). All you have to do from here is highlight all the songs and drag and drop it into a folder that's on your computer or on your external drive, or even easier once they are highlighted right click on that area and choose copy to and find the folder you want to copy them to, usually the My music folder.

Zep, This is a new computer I picked up a few days ago. I had Itunes on my old computer but not on this new one. I just downloaded itunes and quicktime today . When I sign in with my apple id and password it brings me to my account and shows that I have some music and all the apps that I bought that are on my ipad but when I go to play my music that is when it says this computer is not authorized . I go to authorize and put in id and password but it will not go thru and still says not authorized.

More info: TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files. -- TFC only cleans temp folders. -- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

owbist I don't know in those cases if restore would or not but it is definitely worth a try, you can always undo a restore if it did not help.
Unfortunately the many situations I have seen when people had this happen they were gone for good.

Another reason to always have a back up especially when dealing with anything itunes related.

Restoring a computer to an earlier point would probably not restore those files.

One possibility, since the files are still on the ipod, would be to set itunes not to autoupdate and to set the ipod to be used as a drive. Then, I would think you should be able to copy the files from the ipod to the My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music folder.

I haven't tested this, so it might be a good idea to back up the ipod to a PC without itunes first.

So we seem to feel creating a restore point is not really a creation of a cloned copy of the hard drive. I was never a fan of restore and this seems to lower my expectations of the program.

This thread enforces my overwhelming dislike of software makers who feel they have the right to enter my property at will and 'adjust' things to their liking. For vacuumfreak it has to be extremely difficult to understand how things purchased can be snatched back. Could this be considered reverse piracy?

How are you sure it is Itunes that is removing your music? I have an older computer with XP that does have Itunes and I have never lost any music on it. I also have a two month old laptop with Vista that never has had Itunes installed. I ripped 2 CD's with music a few days ago on the laptop. The music was OK for a couple days and now all that is there is the folders where the music was. When I open them, there is no music in them. Both computers have CCleaner and I use it daily to keep things running better.
