device for audio and phone use?

I want to purchase a new phone, but I also need a better device for listening to books. I currently have a scandisk (old) but the FF and rewind are difficult, the battery doesn't last through 5 hours...etc.

Would the 3 G iphone work for both? I liked to have a bookmark feature, longer battery life, and the ability to scroll better plus a simple phone.

Also, I'm on ATT phone plan that is old but cheap. Can I use Iphone with an ATT plan? THANKS techees

Many modern phones have some ability to act as a media player but certainly an iPhone would work. AT&T is the only approved carrier for the iPhone although it's possible to get it to work with T-Mobile. An iPhone will not work with Sprint or Verizon because it uses a different technology.

Expect to pay for a data plan (~$30 per month) with an iPhone.

Vista has had an issue with high definition audio devices from the beginning and would generate that error No audio output device is installed. There was a windows update that was supposed to address the issue. Make sure you are running Service pack 2 on vista. That's all I could suggest for now. Your description sounds like the audio service isn't always starting that's a guess. There's a few users that have gone around in circles with that error. If you Google No audio output device is installed Vista you will see some of the complaints posted on other forums.

Ok, all, this is what I have. When I did the restore I was running IE 8, but had IE 7 when it restored back to Wed. So I assume I am now in 7. My tool bar seems to be Google, I don't think I have the IE tool bar which seems to be my problem. When I had it normally two days ago I had both. I had the IE bar (status, with tools, favs, etc), and also the Google bar. Now I only have the Google although it's restored back to Weds. Boy is that confusing enough??? BTW Mikie, I have hit the ALT and all I get is a dissappearing "circle".

Personally we prefer Sonos. We have experimented with HEOS (Denon's equivalent), Yamaha's MusicCast, Airplay in various licensed products and a few others. From an app standpoint, all pretty good with each having slight advantages and disadvantages when compared against each other. Some have a harder time syncing up their audio output when playing in multiple rooms, causing a slight echo effect when the different zones are close together. Sonos does this pretty well. Lutron has partnered with Sonos to offer up an audio "Pico" for local zone control, furthering its attractiveness. When paired with a Lutron Caseta lighting system for example, you can add a 3-way lighting circuit Pico and a Sonos audio Pico in a 2-gang Lutron Claro wall plate with NO wiring. Pretty slick! From a sound quality standpoint, we feel Sonos is the best so far. Adding to this the equivalent easy of use to the app and negligible if not non-existent multi-room echo effect we feel it is the best buy. Notice I say "so far" however as new offerings come out every day. For example, one product offering that could greatly effect our Sonos recommendation is the Apple HomePod. At $349 retail is it aimed directly at Sonos so we will see what happens when that comes out at the end of this year .

I have the basic Roku.. have had it for (probably close to 10?) years and it works fine. That said, when I replace my tv one of these days, I'll update my streaming device also. I prefer Roku to apple tv and amazon fire because it will also stream Acorn.tv and Spotify. Yes, you will need to have a streaming device on each tv. I don't know that you need the super processing power of the ultra for old classic movies which aren't in high definition. I would think you'd be fine with a premier even the model below that. I am not an expert on these things though. I just know that my original Roku is running fine. I am surprised that you found a 4k tv that isn't a smart tv with either Roku or some other proprietary streaming software installed.

All the major and perhaps minor carriers are now requiring data plans on all but the most basic phones even if you absolutely no interest in accessing the Internet from your phone. Plans start at $10 so it adds $240 (plus taxes) in fees over the life of a typical contract. So called "smartphones" are even more.

Mike is right. Last year was time for me to get a new phone if I re-upped with Verizon. I chose a phone that would not work on the plan I then had, but the CS rep in the store switched me to another plan (not even advertised) that was the same price because I was a long time customer. About a month or two after that, they started requiring a data plan with that phone. Whew! I doubt if I'll ever "upgrade" again.
