No audio output device is installed

"No audio output device is installed" is the pop-up that appears when I try to adjust the audio icon, which is now sporting a red "x." Needless to say, I have no audio on my Toshiba Satellite L355D. When I open the device manager, I find the Realtek High Definition Audio driver software is up to date and "this device is working properly."

I had this problem before when I did Windows updates. Doing a system restore got my audio back.

I've had this problem occur twice before when I've turned the computer on. Doing a system restore got my audio back both times.

Today, when it occurred, I did system restore. Twice. First, I used a restore point from 2 days ago, then I used one from 3 days ago. Both times I got the message "System Restore did not complete successfully. . . " and "an unspecified error occurred during System Restore."

I've been to the Toshiba support website and could not find anything specific to this problem on this model.

Can anyone tell me how to get my audio back? TIA

I forgot to add that I've got a Vista OS.

Have you tried un-installing the device from Device Manager
and then rebooting the computer and letting it reinstall it?

First right click your speaker Icon and open Volume control and make sure your sound is not muted. Located on your lower right. If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound Windows XP See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under Windows Audio. Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped Left click Windows Audio and click restart. - Or Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon - Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... - Right click Realtek AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - Update Driver. To update you will need the CD that came with your computer Or go on the Internet to download the drivers for your sound. Find what sound your using. All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information.

Grant, Such an adapter does exist, it's called an Amplifier. Chris is quite right. You can, however, buy powered/amplified speakers, but since you already have speakers, it wouldn't help you much. Your DVD player has what's called line output, from a little preamplifier. To drive speakers, you need a POWER amplifier. What sort of speakers are they? How many are there? Unless they're really special, you might be better off getting a surround sound setup, it'll take the output from your dvd player - ideally the digital output, which'll have the surround sound info, which the surround amp can distribute around the speakers..... Even cheap surround outfits can sound quite good when it comes to movies, more speakers CAN be better.

Personally we prefer Sonos. We have experimented with HEOS (Denon's equivalent), Yamaha's MusicCast, Airplay in various licensed products and a few others. From an app standpoint, all pretty good with each having slight advantages and disadvantages when compared against each other. Some have a harder time syncing up their audio output when playing in multiple rooms, causing a slight echo effect when the different zones are close together. Sonos does this pretty well. Lutron has partnered with Sonos to offer up an audio "Pico" for local zone control, furthering its attractiveness. When paired with a Lutron Caseta lighting system for example, you can add a 3-way lighting circuit Pico and a Sonos audio Pico in a 2-gang Lutron Claro wall plate with NO wiring. Pretty slick! From a sound quality standpoint, we feel Sonos is the best so far. Adding to this the equivalent easy of use to the app and negligible if not non-existent multi-room echo effect we feel it is the best buy. Notice I say "so far" however as new offerings come out every day. For example, one product offering that could greatly effect our Sonos recommendation is the Apple HomePod. At $349 retail is it aimed directly at Sonos so we will see what happens when that comes out at the end of this year .

If I uninstalled, wouldd the computer just automatically reinstall? I've only uninstalled flaky software before (like when AVG was acting up) and then gone to the website to download it. This is the audio system that was factory installed by Toshiba. I'm kinda scared to uninstall it.

Deleting the audio device won't hurt anything. Windows should see the device and reinstall the driver.

You can also try Microsoft's Fix-it.

Sounds like you got an updated driver from MS that didn't work. You did a system restore and got the old driver back. But this time enough time had passed for the new driver to make its way into system restore. So now when you do a restore, you are just getting the new driver back.

Anyway, uninstall the device and reboot the computer.
The computer will detect it as new hardware and install the drivers.
If not, the drivers are available at the link below.

Thanks for the info Pooh Bear and Mike. And the plot thickens. I turned the computer off last night and when I turned it on this morning, the audio is working just fine! OK, so twice before, I turned it on in the morning, had no audio, did system restore, got audio. This time I did system restore twice and didn't get the audio back. Then I shut the computer down for about 8 hrs. and now I have audio. Do you you know what my problem is, other than I'm being attacked by a gremlin?

Vista has had an issue with high definition audio devices from the beginning and would generate that error No audio output device is installed. There was a windows update that was supposed to address the issue. Make sure you are running Service pack 2 on vista. That's all I could suggest for now. Your description sounds like the audio service isn't always starting that's a guess. There's a few users that have gone around in circles with that error.

If you Google No audio output device is installed Vista you will see some of the complaints posted on other forums.

Thanks, zep. I did google it and started reading the hits. Both Pooh Bear's suggestion to uninstall and a link to mikes's Fix-it are on the first page. I will make sure I have service pack 2 running.
