"This popped up out of nowhere", Reboot the computer first and see.

Then try a system restore if above does not work.

That error usually indicates a driver issue, rebooting may take care of it and or a system restore.

Tried all that. Driver is fine. It just doesn't recognize audio device.

Vista has had an issue with high definition audio devices from the beginning and would generate that error No audio output device is installed. There was a windows update that was supposed to address the issue. Make sure you are running Service pack 2 on vista. That's all I could suggest for now. Your description sounds like the audio service isn't always starting that's a guess. There's a few users that have gone around in circles with that error. If you Google No audio output device is installed Vista you will see some of the complaints posted on other forums.

Starting with the simple things. You didn't mention a reboot or a system restore. What did you recently do out of the ordinary, if anything? Any updates or upgrades? Software removal or additions? Windows Updates? Software reconfigurations? Full system scan with your AV and malware detection software(s) of choice? Thunderstorms or power surges? ----------------- -------Rebooted,System restore, nothing new, automatic updates and driver downloads, full system scan and malware (which said some files could not be scanned), thunderstorms after loss of sound.

You would need a schematic of the sound card or portion of the TV to even attempt to install an Audio Out jack. You could consider installing a Headphone jack, like steve o suggested. A jack could be wired from the speaker wires in that the speakers would cut out when you plug in headphones. Or if you have a Stereo sound on the TV, connect a Stereo Headphone jack from each speaker for that affect. What did you have in mind for this Audio Output Jack?

I went the russsound way and I love it. The russound speaker switch I have has an A/B source. (so that would help you) It also matches the impedance depending on the number of speakers you have so you don't damage anything. I also got the volume controlls but I never use them. Take the money you would spend on volume controlls ($35-$60 a pop) and buy IR transmiters for your remote. then you can not only controll the volume from anywhere but also the CD or Tuner...

Go to start, run, type in services .msc; then scroll down down until you find windows audio. Right click windows audio and select properties, then look for where it says startup type, make sure that selection is set to automatic. Make sure you restart after doing this.

you can also go into your device manager to look for any yellow exclamation points to see if it is showing any problems, in the device manager you can select to remove the device, then reboot the pc it will automatically find it and reinstall it which may fix the problem. If you need to know how to get to device manager please tell us which version of windows you are using.
