Hello,

My Aunt's computer failed to power on, lights,fans etc.

I figured it was the power supply because it had a blown capacitor which was found lying inside the power supply.

I replaced power supply with a new one (antec 350w). The cpu is an emachine model t2984 about 3 yrs old. When I hooked up new supply motherboard light came on and everything seems fine, no loose connections or anything.None of the fans or computer itself powered up!!

I checked the powerswitch switches and everything looks fine.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?!!!! Thank you in advance!

eMachines were/are notorious for the cheap power supply failing and in many cases taking out the motherboard too. Sadly that seems to be the case with yours.

A repair is costly. Not only the expense of the motherboard and the installation fees if you cannot do it yourself but you also have to buy another copy of Windows unless you are willing to argue with Microsoft.

Microsoft changed the rules last year so that folks like you could not re-install the operating system if the motherboard was replaced. However if you phone Microsoft and let them know the situation you will be allowed to use your existing copy of Windows. Again this will depend on the tenacity of the person doing the repairs for you. Whoever phones may need to be firm with them but I understand they can and do make exceptions

Sounds like a power surge took out the power supply.
Must have been quite a surge to blow
a capacitor out of its seating.
Chances are the surge also took out the motherboard.
Before you sink any more money into this
you need to test the other components.
Test the hard drive and other drives, any PCI cards, Ram, etc.
You will need to put them in another computer to test them.

Even if just the motherboard is bad it could end up
costing you more than what the computer is worth.
A replacement motherboard is almost $190.
I would think seriously before trying to fix the computer.

Power supplies are very easy to replace. Dell uses propriatary power supplies with different plugs than the ones you buy at electronic stores. Just be sure to get a Dell or a Dell clone power supply which matches your computer. Then to install all you have to do is unplug the computer and unscrew the old supply and BEFORE you remove any of the old plugs, just lay the new supply next to the old and as you unplug each plug, plug in the new one. They are color coded so no big problem. It's hard to know for sure if it's just the power supply as lightening may have fried the rest of the computer, was it on a surge suppressor. If so, the manufacturer of the supressor should reimburse you for the loss.

Pooh Bear, I could recommend a 500w Minimum for any computer. I would also recommend buying a Good Brand Name. The No Name PSU can Fry your computer when they die. I've seen this happen! Cheap Power Supply fried 2 Hard Drives and a Motherboard on a friends computer (at his home) I had just sat down to look at the computer to see why it wasn't running right (he already had the computer running when I got there). All of the sudden the Power Supply just started smoking, I couldn't get it plug pulled quick enough. Anyway, enough of this story, just be careful installing a cheap PSU! I just checked mine, it says 629w is Recommended. I'm lucky, I purchased a Beast at 1050w. I purchased an Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050w Power Supply Unit. It should be plenty of power for when I build my next Computer too!

It surely won't hurt to have a larger power supply. You do need to be careful, some manufacturers computers won't except a Standard Power Supply. I have a Dell sitting in my Repair Room that will only except a certain Power Supply. I have however worked on a number of manufactured computers and had no problem replacing with a standard power supply, just check your measurements against theirs. Also make sure that the picture of the back where you would screw it in matches the back on the psu you're looking at! Here is a Link for a 430w PSU that's $10 cheaper after a Rebate. Corsair CX430m 430w BTW, it's offered by a company most of us are familiar with!

True and as long as the voltage is the same should be ok. So, the possible dangerous situations are: If the voltage is too high for the device. If the amps are too low for the device. As a general rule, devices that produce a lot of heat or light or movement usually need a high current supply. Devices that control things, like a TV remote or some small gadget with maybe a few LEDs on it, won't need a lot of current.

I wouldn't guess that your MB was bad. If the fans aren't working, then there is a problem with the power supply or switch, or maybe the wires aren't plugged in good enough. The case fans have nothing to do with the MB. I've seen wires that have been pushed out of the molex connector that looked like they were connected. Make sure each wire in the connector is firmly seated.

I've seen switches that go bad and only work on half of the switch. Try bypassing the switch, and make sure that the switch is wired correctly for the new power supply.
