Sorry, Jackie. I just tried to use the instructions from FAQ and didn't get very far. So I did a Search on this forum to see if there were any other answers to cache clearing questions. And I found an answer that worked! It said: "In Firefox click 'Tools' in the menu bar, then click on 'Clear recent history'. This will give you the option to select whatever you want to clear." Then you should click to produce a check mark in front of Cache (make sure nothing else is checked) and then hit 'Clear Now'. BTW, I also cleared my cookies at the same time as I cleared the cache. Saving a return trip.

Firefox uses a file called history.dat that is kept in your profiles folder to keep the history of webpages visited. I think this file (history.dat) is probably corrupt. It can be deleted and when firefox starts again it will make a new history.dat file. To fix the problem, here's what you need to do. 1. Go to start, run. 2. Copy/Paste the line below into the run box and click ok. %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ 3. A Windows Explorer window should open with a folder with a name consisting of 8 random letters and numbers followed by .default. 4. Double-click on this folder and you should see a whole bunch of files. Highlight the history.dat file. 5. Close Firefox because the file can't be deleted when firefox is open. 6. Right-Click on the history.dat file and select delete. 7. Close the Windows Explorer box. 8. Launch firefox. It should create a new history.dat and start putting/retaining the list of visited sites. Repost if you have any problems and/or if it works okay. HTH. Terry

Please do what you feel is best for you and I hope your continued success with the protocol. For those who are inexperienced and reading this thread, all too often low and non-threat data miners and tracking cookies are recognized by some users (not speaking of any member here) as spyware/malware and malicious. In most circumstances these cookies as well as most others, are non-invasive, non-threatening and safe. They tend to be more of a privacy question than a security question. If any user feels a desire to be focused on the threat of cookies so be it, but I ask users to remember if they are delivered on your system between removals why isn't there damage created during their short-term stay? They are not isolated nor are they dormant. Now the disclaimer: Yes there has been cookie oriented threats in the past and likely will be in the future. By there nature and design they were quickly defeated and removed with standard applications. However, this potential threat is undoubtedly of less concern than the other threats we face; rootkits, keyloggers, viruses and bots. Be safe, be aware, and use your protection utilities in a systematic manner. DA

Browsers maintain a "Cache". The cache is a folder on your hard drive where recently viewed pages and images downloaded while you are on the Internet are stored. (Temporary Internet Files) This speeds up loading the page the next time you visit that page. However..you can eventually wind up with a huge cache containing thousands of graphics and small files. Ultimately, this slows the browser, and can cause glitches with some sites. Unless you have a VERY slow connection, the space allocated for the cache may be lowered to a more reasonable level, which will improve overall performance. Clearing cache in Internet Explorer: 1. Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. 2. Select "Properties" 3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" 4. Click OK. 5. Click "OK" again to close. Cache Location Click Tools > Internet Options>Settings. Look halfway down the page for "Current Location". Windows creates a "cache" folder for each user. (named "Temporary Internet Files") If you try to view the cache folder using "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer", you may not be able to find it. This is because the folder is hidden by default. To view the folder: 1. Start>Programs>Windows Explorer>My Computer>"C" drive or the drive in which "Windows" is installed. 2. On the toolbar at the top of the page, click Tools > Folder Options>View. 3. From the list shown, select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" 4. Also, "deselect" Hide Extensions for Known File Types and "Hide Protected Operating System Files". 5. Click OK. You may now double-click the "Temporary Internet Files" folder to view the contents, using the location described in "Current Location" which you viewed previously. (The default location for Temporary Internet Files in WinXP is: C > Documents and Settings>(user name) >Local Settings>Temporary Internet Files) Reduce cache size By default, the cache size is set to be quite large. Performance can be improved by lowering the size of the cache. 1. From the IE toolbar, choose Tools > Internet Options. 2. On the General tab, click the Settings button. 3. Lower the cache size using "Amount of Disk Space to Use". (For an accurate setting, use the number window instead of the slider.Lower the setting to 75MB.) For Mozilla Firefox: Open the browser and on the toolbar, click Tools>Options>Privacy. Use the "Clear All" button to cleanup. Click the "Plus" sign next to "Cache" and set the cache size to the desired amount. 70,000 KB is 70 Megabytes, which is a good size for the cache file.
