Lost Speaker Icon

Somehow the speaker icon has disappeared from the lower right corner of my bottom bar (where time is displayed, as well as antivirus program icon, etc.). I've tried control panel, startup, and various other spots to figure out how to get it back. Seems that it should be pretty simple but it's not coming.

BTW, I'm running Vista, if that matters.

Any tips?

Reboot the computer if you have not done so.

try going to Start, Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer, click the "+" sign next to My Computer, "+" next to Local Drive - C, "+" next to Windows, click the word System32, on the right side of the screen - double click sndvol32.exe. That should install it.

or you can do a search for sndvol32.exe and double click it.

this is where to find what you were looking for
control panel>sound and audio device and check the button "place volume icon in the task bar" try this first.

if those do not work then go here and read the replies in the post replies #2#3 tell how to replace the needed exe file.

Regarding "Million Trees LA" website, it's very odd that virtually all the trees listed are not native to the LA region, or California, or even the West. Yet in most of the articles, they say that "palms are not native to LA basin", or wherever. Yet so are most of the trees on their website. I just browsed the site very quickly, but they've got Crepe Myrtles listed, which caste almost NO shade. More care should have been used in deriving that list. I appreciate the push for more tree canopy - Miami is working on the same thing - but don't sacrifice the palm trees!

I have that problem every once in a while, except only for the Volume, the Safely Add/Remove is always there. I Googled and found the solution Mikie mentioned, for the Volume. It works, for a while, then the V button is gone again. System Restore always said no changes had been made. I've found that rather than going through the Options, a cold reboot will usually work. About the Safely A/R button: does anyone ever use it? DA, I remember from 'way back when there was a thread about that Invisible line. I think I found it then, but never have since then. Computers . . . aren't they fun? When you are having a bad day, try this link. I guarantee you will have a smile on your face, or maybe even LOL! Old news but worthy: "Unnoticed in the Tuesday release of Firefox 5 was Mozilla's decision to retire Firefox 4, shipped just three months ago. Mozilla spelled out vulnerabilities it had patched in that edition and in 2010's Firefox 3.6, but it made no mention of any bugs fixed in Firefox 4 on Tuesday, because Firefox 4 has reached what Mozilla calls EOL, for 'end of life,' for patches. Although the move may have caught users by surprise, the decision to stop supporting Firefox 4 has been discussed within Mozilla for weeks. In a mozilla.dev.planning mailing list thread, Christian Legnitto, the Firefox release manager, put it most succinctly on May 25: 'Firefox 5 will be the security update for Firefox 4.' Problem is, users are being prompted to upgrade now but are hesitant because the new rapid release of updates means many add-ons are not compatible. The time transmissions are at a very very long wavelength - 60 khz (compare to 540 - 1750 khz AM broadcast band.) At such a low frequency, the signals are easily interfered with. Noisy light dimmers, electric motors with bad brushes, cheap fluorescent lights, metal siding on your house, metal mesh in stucco, radiant barrier in your roof, and so on, all take their toll. So most of these clocks listen for the signal in the middle of the night - when electrical interference is at a minimum. It is also the best time of day for low frequency radio propagation from Colorado - where the transmitter is located. Some will try once, at, say, 1:00 AM. Others may try several times per night in order to get success. This is why the instructions say to place the clock near a window (no metal) and wait overnight (lower electrical noise, plus that is when they are designed to listen for the signal.) It is usually not a problem if it misses a few nights. Cheap quartz clocks usually have an accuracy of about 10-15 seconds per month, so the time doesn't drift very quickly. It is kind of a pain when the DST switch happens, and it takes a couple of days for the clock to notice. Also, if it has been a couple of years since the battery was changed, a fresh battery might be a good thing to try.

You may consider a System restore as well,

Click start, click all programs, click accessories, click System Tools, click system restore, choose a restore point back a few days ago...

Let's start with the easy question. Are you sure it has "disappeared" or is it just hidden? Not sure? Click on the arrow to the left of the Notification Area. It will expand the area to show hidden icons.

If it has indeed "disappeared" we can try this.

START>right click on Properties>Notification Area Tab>under System Icons make sure the Volume is checked. If not, check it>Apply>OK.

If it is checked, uncheck it>Apply>OK. Then complete above to reset the icon.

Ok, now I'm back and see the 2 most recent posts. Nothing's worked so far. Yes, it's disappeared. I am at work now so will try the new suggestions when I get home. Thanks for the follow-up. I am taking a language class on-line and can barely hear!

you should be able to go into the volume settings area of the sound and audio devices in control panel and manually adjust your volume there with out having a volume icon so you can do that until you manage to get it back.

you tried going to that site and downloading a new copy of the file and then putting it into the proper folder on your pc and it did not work?

If you know when it happened you can try a system restore to that time you may have to redo some updates if you lose them by going back in time, depends on how far back you have to go.

as an alternative you could download the free voulumouse which allows you to control your volume using your mouse, it is quite handy.

I forgot to mention if you scroll down on that site it gives the directions for how to install it and use it. I recommend the automatic Installation option. as you read the info you will see that it also has a couple of other functions which might be helpful too.
