Tfswctrl.exe Problem and Question

Hi,

MS XP and IE 7

For the past three days when shutting down the computer I get a message that Tfswctrl.exe won't shut down or something like that, I have to end task on it to get it to go away. How can I fix this? It's really just an annoyance but would like to get a fix. Now I found the below information but it still makes no sense to me as I DON'T or HAVEN'T written or stored anything to CD wasn't using any software at the times it occured. Thank you.

Background task for Hewlett-PackardÂs DLA software (Drive Letter Assignment). HPÂs DLA gets installed when you installed the software that comes with their CD/DVD Writers. HPÂs DLA is packet writing software which enables you to store data onto CDÂs directly from within Windows applications, without using the actual CD Writing software (much like RoxioÂs DirectCD.

Recommendation :

Many users have reported shutdown problems caused by TFSWCTRL "not responding". In all cases, since they were never using the DLA software and were instead using the CD Writing software to create their CDs, they simply de-installed HPÂs DLA and that solved all their problems with TFSWCTRL.

tfswctrl.exe file information

The process Drive Letter Access Component or Direct Access Component belongs to the software HP DLA or IBM DLA or Sonic DLA by Sonic Solutions (www.sonic.com) or VERITAS Software, Inc (www.veritas.com) or HP (www.hp.com) or IBM Corporation (www.ibm.com).
Cause: Drive Letter Access (DLA) has become corrupted or may not be compatible with other applications, such as Packet Writing Utilities, on your system.

The easiest way to resolve this issue is to disable DLA:

1. Go to Start --> Run
2. Type "msconfig" in the Open: box and click OK. This will launch the System Configuration Utility (SCU).
3. In the SCU, choose the Startup tab
4. Look for the Startup Item "tfswctrl.exe" or "tfswctrl" and uncheck it.
5. Click Apply and then Close
6. A dialog window will open. Choose Restart.
7. After restarting, a new dialog window will pop up saying your system configuration has changed. Check the box at the end of the message to stop the message from reappearing. Click OK.

If you continue to have issues with crashing, you may want to remove DLA all together:

1. Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs
2. Locate Sonic DLA or Drive Letter Access from the list of applications
3. Choose Remove

it can be from a roxio cd record program that you may have or an hp or veritas, if you have say a roxio program then you could go do an update to the program and get the newer versions.

To disable it through services:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type: msconfig
4. In the "system configuration utility", Click "services" tab
5. Uncheck all services by that name.
6. Click "OK"

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this, I forgot I had posted this question. IF I disable this tfswctrl can I enable it later? I use an HP all in one scanner, printer, copier is this what it is used for? Thanks.

(1) is the source of power, as you surmised and determined empirically. One of the cables goes to another room and the switch does not affect it. The black from that cable is paired with the black of the cable from the power source and a pigtail from that junction goes to the switch to power it. The other two blacks are one for the fan and one for the light. Since there is just one circuit, the whites can be left spliced together. The blacks for the light and fan each need to be controlled by separate switches. A 2-gang box must be installed instead of the single gang you now have. The existing single gang must be really crowded. It probably exceeds box fill specifications.

That sort of joint just adds to the structural integrity of the fence. And is no more likely to cause problems for the posts than leaving them uncapped and fully exposed to the elements, which is an equally common approach.

no does not have to do with your hp all in one, it has to do with music recording products.

yes it can be changed back in services just like you undid it.
