Urgent. Is Panasonic Whisperwarm fan too big for us?

Hi everyone,

We're remodeling both bathrooms (master and children's/guest) and must provide fan Monday. Had decided on Panasonic Whisper warm fans with lights. But when we saw them in the store, I was surprised at how big they were- looked considerably bigger than their whisper fans (w/out heaters). Husband thinks they're far too big for our bathroom (and even before seeing how big they were was trying to talk me out of them, saying we have heater vents in the bathroom already).

Our bathroom is 8.5ft long x 7 ft wide. Children's bathroom is 8.3 ft. long x 7.5ft w. We have 8 ft. ceilings. We will have a sun tunnel in both bathrooms as well as 1 down light and sconces on either side of the bathroom mirror.

Is this fan too big for our bathroom? I've tried to find dimensions but can't find them online.

I'll let others render opinions on whether it's right for your room, but I always wonder what keeps the fan from sucking up the heat it puts out? Good luck!

"Too big" as in the grill being so large that it overwhelms a "small" ceiling? That's up to you. But normally the grill "disappears" after a while and becomes second nature.

If you match the ceiling color to the grill color, the grill will become even less obtrusive.

My friend has a nutone fan light combo right in her shower. Here is the website link; http://www.nutone.com/support-faqs-10077.asp#12 From their FAQ: "Can I mount NuTone fans above my tub and shower? Most NuTone fans are rated for use over a shower or bathtub with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)." I think I read that you can't use their combo heater ones though and have seen the nutone at the big orange box and also costco. Her light is really pretty, round, with a lacy border around the top that hides the vent. That would probably work for you. Also, the whisper warms are UGLY, not at all pretty and it you have vaulted ceilings, it probably wouldn't warm up your space that well anyway. I do love the heater but my bathroom is tiny and heats up nicely with a model that was oversized for the space according to their website. Also with a heater model, you have to give up another slot in your electric box as they need their own dedicated 20 amp circuit I think. Good luck!

I have the same issue. Last month I installed my first Fantech in-line bath fan vented through my roof. The fan motor cannot be heard but the wind noise at the inlet is quite objectionable. Fantech recommends using 4" insulated flex duct instead of metal duct. I used flex. The velocity of the air movement is quite high. Does it clear the air-yes, but in a very noisy fashion.. I also do HVAC. I would never try to run 130 CFM (which is what my fan is rated at) through a 4" heat/cool supply duct. Doing so would result in high static pressure, high velocity, and noise at the outlet. Since most bath fans typically use 4" duct I thought perhaps Nu-tone and Fantech knew something I didn't, or they had some kind of way to engineer and dampen the noise levels down. Not so, at least not in my case. One solution would be to convert the inlet side of the bath fan system to a 6" duct, 6" damper, and an inlet housing that uses 6" duct. This is a major pain and expense. Another option is to install a 120V speed controler to slow the fan motor down. If it still draws enough air through to do the job air noise would be reduced proportionately. When researching in-line bath fans I seem to recall one manufacturer using 6" ducting instead of 4" with their lower cfm fans to keep noise down. Apparently they got it right. Now I'm trying to recall who that manufacturer is. Does anyone know right off hand?

I would guess that the 110CFM WhisperWarm would be okay for a 10% bigger bathroom, but really don't have any knowledge in this area. I would think it might just take a little longer to vent or warm up. I have the WhisperWarm in a bathroom and this is what we did: We put the ventilation fan on a timer and the heater on a simple on/off switch. We figured that you wouldn't need to have the heater on after you left the room, so you could turn it off as you left. The ventilation would be kept on after you leave, so it made sense to put it on a timer. We did not buy one with a light in it. If you interested in that, I think I remember seeing a post that people were not pleased with the amount of light it put out. I have both a WhisperWarm and a whisper fan without the heater (can't recall the name of it) and the fan itself is louder on the WhisperWarm. I would not call it obnoxiously loud, but if you are really particular about the sound level, it might be an issue. If you've read a lot of posts, you will see that ducting is important, too. Use rigid and not flexible ducting. Of course, the heater is louder still.

I have 2 Panasonic fans. The secret to any fan noise is proper duct work. This means as long a run as possible directly off the fan without changing direction or reducing size. Avoiding 90 degree bends - multiple 45's are better. Avoid flexible duct work like the plague. It's horrible stuff. Not only will it collect dust and moisture, the turbulence of the air caused by all those ridges contributes a lot to the noise level. Both my fans are exhausted to the outside with rigid duct work properly installed, taped (not duct tape - silver foil tape) and of course screwed together. They're very very quiet. Any fan is going to be much quieter with no ductwork attached, which is how they're demonstrated in big box stores which also are massive, tons of ambient noise etc. all making the fans seem quieter. Also don't oversize the fan for the cubic feet of the room. Very important, as is ensuring there is enough supply coming in under the closed door etc. to feed the fan. As much air as it pushes out of the room has to be replaced with new air coming in under that small crack under the door. If it's not getting enough replacement air, it will be noisier.

I have a whisperwarm in our 6x6 downstairs bathroom. I do think it is large compared to my other panasonic whisper fan, but I don't notice it anymore. It was a necessity because this room is in an addition and is the last room in the house to heat up. It can be very, very cold in there in the winter. I have the heater on a timer so it comes on automatically on cold mornings and the room is nice and toasty at shower time. So, while I do think the unit is larger than the standard vent fan, I love the heat element. Also, it's not very quiet so I don't think it deserves the label "whisperwarm." I believe Broan makes fans with heater elements but I don't think they are much smaller. There is a round Broan I was considering, but I thought the Panasonic would do a better job.

We were surprised at the physical size of our Whisper Warm. Our bathroom is 10x11. As others have said, you don't notice it after a while.

I actually brought one home, looked at the grill in the room, and promptly returned it for a small fan-only unit with a minimal profile. I didn't think the projection down from the ceiling was attractive at all. I also separated the light and heat functions to other devices and am very pleased with the effectiveness.
