connecting two computers together....

I've got two computers.... the CD writer does NOT work on my older one, nor can I get on the internet with it. There is no floppy drive... I can't save or email anything. I have pictures and music I want to save from it. Can I not connect the two computers together via a USB cable and transfer my files to the new computer that way? Neither one recognizes each other when I plug them together... plus I've never tried transferring files this way and I don't know WHAT I'M DOING!!! Someone please help! Thanks!!!

you can not use a plain usb cable you have to have a special cable that is used just for that.

Looks like that, just google for "file transfer cable"

You do not want to hook up one pc to another with a regular usb cable! NOT good.

YOu can also just get a usb flash drive and move you stuff from your pc on to the flash drive and then plug that into the other pc and transfer it over, they are great for that and cheap. Or get an external CD drive that can be plugged in to any pc and use it to burn cd, or a usb external hard drive, which is a great thing to have anyway so you can keep our files backed up to it.
I have one of those cables but never much liked it, I prefer to use a thumb flash drive or a usb hard drive that is the way to go.
I just saw a 4 gig Kingston flash drive on www.buy.com for around $10 with free shipping.

be sure anytime you connect anything to your pc through a usb port that you always click on the safely disconnect hardware icon in the try by the clock and select to disconnect the item and wait till it tells you it is safe.

thanks... that's exactly what i did... went and bought a USB flash drive.... why the hell i didn't think of that before - i don't know... such a simple fix...

So it begs the question - do you need all those 5 fans? Perhaps he was a high powered gamer. Where are these fans connected electrically? If one or more are connected to the motherboard you may find they are speed controlled by the yellow wire as Zep points out. Which are suckers and which are blowers? Front fans usually low in the case and suck in, rear fans are usually high on the case and blow out the back. The side fan sometimes comes with the fan sucking outwards but whenever I use a side mounted fan I like it blowing in to provide loads of cool air over the heatsink fan which is often very close by. If the previous owner was a gamer it is possible he has removed some higher powered toys including a power supply and replaced it with the original or equal, you might want to use the calculator linked below to feel sure your power supply is adequate. How do you network all computers together??

Here's an article that covers the basics fairly well. There are some possible snafu's if the article doesnt get you up an networked look in your services for Computer Browser and set it auto and look at its dependencies. Then should you desire you should be able to go to any folder and do properties and share that folder, or alternatively map the drives. Just don't try doing this with a regular usb cable!! I prefer to use a usb flash thumb drive to move them if you are not networking them. I never cared much for the usb transfer cables.
