OT: Opinions needed on car - 2006 Toyota Matrix

My daughter is looking at one and wondering if anyone has first-hand experience/opinions on this car?

Sure would appreciate any feedback, she's going to look on Sunday.

Deanna, I have no experience with that particular model, but have been a Toyota owner for many years, previously a Corolla and currently a RAV-4.

I can tell you that both of these cars were great, never left me stranded, didn't cost me much to maintain, got great gas mileage and ran forever!

I had over 200,000 miles on the Corolla when it "died"....I don't remember exactly what it's issue was at the time. My 1997 RAV has 238,000 miles on it and still runs like a top. I have had the RAV for nearly 10 years, and other than regular maintenance, I have only had to replace the timing chain (about $700) in all that time.

When she goes, I will surely get another Toyota!

Deanna, count me among the Toyota loyalists. It's probably the car I've had the least amount of trouble with, ever. My 2002 Toyota (although not a Matrix) is still running like it's new, and I expect to have it a very long time.

We always buy our cars as well. I understand the draw to leasing, low payments and yes a new vehicle more often, but like others have said unless you're leasing to use it as a business write off, the benefits for the general consumer are much more beneficial to the auto dealer than the consumer, that's why they promote them so much. If I were to consider leasing, my concern would be the what if's. What if I needed to get out of the contract early? What if I didn't want to lease at a later date or buy the car I'd been leasing at the EOC? What if financially I can't afford the large payments required at the end of the lease period? What if the automakers change the leasing guidelines again? Last time they did that so many people got screwed by having to buy the vehicle(s) they were leasing. In our area the majority of the ex-auto workers got great deals and leased ALL their vehicles. Also, the part that scares me too is I've heard a lot of complaints about dealers dinging the lessee with excessive costs for damages, some they say didn't even exist. Our car situation is very similar to yours, my 2006 Jeep will be paid off in 2 months, (Yeah) and my husbands Nissan Truck has been paid off for 3-4 years. Right now it's in the shop getting adjustments on a new tranny we invested in. That's the first time it's really ever needed anything major. I personally can't wait until we have 2 cars with no payments. There are so many things I'd rather do with that money. We've bought new several times but my Jeep was a demo model with enough miles on it that they had to sell it as used. We saved on depreciation that way and the car still had the new car smell. A winning option in my opinion. I will willingly admit I'm biased. I worked in finance for many years as did my Mother (I did mortgages, she did auto loans). Our perspectives are conservative but we've always believed that unless the expense to rent can be written off, it's always better to own. As far as buying American-Toyota has a mfg plant in Georgetown Ky, and it my po dunk town there is a factory that makes the interiors for Toyota-this plant employs over 4oo people, and no telling how many the plant in Georgetown employs. You can't get much more American than something that comes from Kentucky.

A little OT, I need to buy a new mattress

We purchased the Simmons Beautyrest Black Helena Pillowtop back in Dec 2006. I truly loved it for the first few months, and then it started with the body indentations. I thought the indents were from the mattress cover, so took that off, no change, turned mattress, nothing. It progressively got worse that we had 2 ditches in this King size. I called Boston Store Furniture Gallery, 20 months into owning it. Major back and neck problems set in. They sent out an inspector and sure enough, 1 Â½ inch body indents and the sides of the mattress were busting out. Inspector told me that his report would reflect a defective mattress. I asked his opinion of how many defective mattresses he seeÂs and he said "off the record" to strongly fight for a replacement but to stay clear of this Helena as he has seen many defective mattresses. Simmons sold me on the single coils for less movement on the mattress as I flip a lot. In my opinion, those single coils are receiving a lot of strain. In order to get a replacement under the warranty, it has to be equal or greater than what I had spent. Well, I really donÂt want to get another Helena due to the problems I had on this one. The salesperson hasnÂt heard any of these complaints and actually had 3 other couples trying out the Helena as we spoke. She has sold over 100 of these w/o any other complaints. I have 21 days to decide if I want it replaced, or to try another mattress. She wants me to try it again, but I hesitate. Due to what I spent on the Helena, I would have to go with a Tempurpedic type bed but donÂt think that will work for us. Anyone else having problems with the Helena indentations? Suggestions on a Simmons or Sealy plush mattress?

I have no doubt that you'll love your RR and the cooled seats are a must in your area. I used to think they were over-kill but they're in the new F-Pace S that DH just bought and I will definitely get them in my next car. His seats are black and I swear that they get hotter than my beige ones so the cooled vents help. While DH loves his Jaguar I think it's just a tad too small for my purposes and probably for yours too. He traded in his MB sedan because he wanted something that was sporty and more fun to drive. He opted for the gasoline engine because I have a diesel MB SUV and that's the one we take on trips - better mileage and much larger than his car. His car also has the gas saving feature where the engine shuts off when the car is stopped - but you can also turn that off which is what we did. I wonder if you will have that choice with your RR? My car only has 30,000 miles on it and my DDIL needs a vehicle now that they moved out of the city to the suburbs. DS offered to buy mine since it's big enough for his 2 dogs and future children. I just have to find a replacement vehicle and I'm looking at RR. We want another diesel and MB, Porsche and Audi stopped making diesels in the US. I also detest run-flats and I think I can still get real tires at LR/RR. You'll have to report back and let us know what you finally picked - and photos too. Maire

We have the All Wheel Drive model of a 2006 Matrix and we like it very much. No problems and good gas mileage even with the AWD.

Another Toyota groupie here. I have a 2000 Solara that is the best car I've ever owned.
I have always noticed how many older Toyotas are still on the road -- that speaks to their dependability, IMO.

Check this thread from a few weeks ago..... for the record - my DH loves the Vibe we ended up with. It is virtually the same car as the Matrix, just a different brand name.

I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix. No major problems so far, and it has 96K miles on it. I keep the oil changed in it though. I have replaced the tires once and am due for doing it again. But that's to be expected with all the miles I rack up. The air conditioning isn't all that great, but I don't live where it is all that hot all that often. Good gas mileage but the gas tank is small, so it's a catch 22. I love the flexibility with the back seats folding down. I use mine for hauling a lot of junk, so I like that part a lot. I think your daughter might really like it, I know I have been a satisfied owner for the past four years.

Well, they took the plunge and bought it!
Sounds like the same as eandhl posted!!
2006 with the AWD. She said she just need to modify the back end a little so her Pug doesn't jump straight down and crash his nose into the pavement!! LOL

She's been driving a beat up Dodge Neon all through college.
I am glad to see her in a newer, more reliable car!

dgkritch, she will love it. AWD isn't only for snow. It makes a big difference on a wet road, a road with leaves etc. I once described driving an AWD is like a cat on rug.
