anyone notice GW slowing down?

When I am accessing a new page (or refreshing an old page), I notice it takes longer the past couple of weeks. (perhaps since they rolled out some new software that is probably when lots of stuff broke).

In Firefox status bar on the bottom, I can see a slew of connection statuses roll by. about 10-15. Of course, I have adblocker on so not sure what all those sites are supposed to be showing. It could just be poor program design.

In any case, it is very annoying.

Today I find GW very good. There are times it is slow to load a page. As I am never sure if this is my ISP or GW I don't bother much. I do think it is GW as other sites load normally. If it gets too slow for you simply open a second tab with GW so you can click to change the page then use the other tab while it loads.

My back button still doesn't work. I guess GW gave up trying to fix it.

There was another Wisconsin GW member that was banned earlier this year, apparently for posting links or advice that the administrators disliked. Apparently, once banned, no attempt to re-register will work; so once you're out, you're _out_. If you read the "terms of service", there are numerous reasons that this could occur, perhaps unintentionally - such as perceived commercial intent (selling seeds), copyright infringement, use of profanity (even m*sked profanity), or complaints by other members (such as on the Hot Topics Forum). Setting up multiple accounts is another reason... so if someone creates a new account just to make a provocative statement anonymously, that would qualify. One would hope that GW would provide a warning beforehand... but they may not have the staff to handle such things on a personal level. That would be sad, because for frequent posters, increased participation = increased risk. I know it makes me nervous, because you don't know where the line is until you cross it - and then it is too late. If I recommend seed companies to other posters (as many do), does that put me at risk? If I post links to other websites, which would be taboo? It would be nice - and in the best interests of both GW & its membership - if this issue could be further clarified.

Shutting down and re-starting helped; however, I did this a couple of days ago and it slipped back to slow,slow a day later.

Well to keep the censors at bay, let me first say that I haven't made any interesting improvements to my small house. My septic tank drainfield stopped working and had to be replaced. Home maintainence zapped the home improvement budget so everything else is on hold for a while. Add my son's 16th bday on the 9th and Christmas closing in fast and there just isn't any cashflow left. In fact, it all left! My son and I did engage in a rather fun and interesting project two weekends ago but since it was more furniture related I didn't feel right airing it here, but since you asked..... I bought him a flat screen high def television for his birthday. My first. I had a 27 inch conventional tube TV sitting in a typical entertainment system/wall unit. That unit was quite large and included a concealed, swing out rack on the left to hold the CD's, DVD's, etc. and a rack system on the right for stereo equipment. Although the old wall unit was quite large, my new flat screen TV (37 inch) wouldn't fit the hole for the TV. I had looked around for a replacement stand to hold the cable box, my son's game system, etc. and put the flat screen TV at an appropriate height but couldn't find anything. We had unloaded the old wall unit and wheeled it out to the porch so we could load it into the truck and take it to the dump. We had talked about designing and building our own stand and since the old unit was very large and very heavy, we started dismantling it to salvage hardware and make it easier to handle. The more we dismantled, the more I started thinking I could cut this old unit down to size and redesign it. So we did. My old (1985 vintage) component stereo system had developed some problems so the stereo section was eliminated. I liked the concealed rack for the Games. Cd's, DVD's so we disassembled that, shortenened it, changed the location of the shelves and reassembled it. Then we shifted the stereo cabinet upright panels over to the "TV hole" and shortened them, creating a shelf for the cable box, game system and another shelf for the modem and wireless router since all that connects to my incoming cablevision. We shortened and refitted the top and voala! A redesigned cabinet/TV stand for zero dollars. The old unit was about 60 inches wide and 50 inches tall the new unit is about 40 inches wide and 34 inches tall. Perfect fit! And, my son and I had a great time thinking through the redesign and planning it out so most of the old hardware went back into the factory holes. It was a fantastic father/son project and one we won't soon forget. This will do until we find a better solution or until we design and build a replacement unit from scratch. Fun enough? hmmmm, I wonder what it can be then. I'm assuming you're on a regular computer or laptop. Have you tried using a different search engine? Do you find the forum via Houzz's home page? It could be search engine or the way you enter the site. Houzz has so much more to download than Gardenweb did, I access the site by googling GW, and then I click into home decor in the results, I never go in via Houzz's home page.

Did you see what is in the banner under What's New at GW?

It says:UPDATE: Monday: 10:00 AM ET: The Case of the Bumfuzzled Back Button has been solved and a fix will be implemented on Tuesday night. Look for further updates tomorrow!

I'm on an antique DUN and it works as it normally does. Be sure that you are logged in as it does make a difference. It also does if you are a user that dumps cookies consistently.

Np's however this is one of the worst sites for loading in cookies/spyware, which will slow down your PC, I run my cookie & cache clean up, often when here, mine only takes a sec. and always comes up with a list to get rid of...

I use adblock in FF and I just added more filters for a bunch of crap they load and watched my CPU % go down. I don't have all the culprits yet, but I'm working on it. Its better. I hope I don't screw up real sites for myself.

When you have an older computer, it makes a lot of whirring noises for some of these scripts. Do they think everyone has 4GB RAM !!!??

Wendy no 32 bit computer can use 4 gigs of memory. Vista likes 3 gigs assuming the motherboard is capable. My Windows7 computer has 4 gigs as a matched pair but I can only use 3.2 something gigs of that.

64 bit computer can use more but there is the issue of a lack of programs written for 64 bit machines.

When you hear the whirring noise do you see the activity light on the front of the tower either running steady or very frequently flashing? This might be a lack of space on your hard drive. You can check the free space by clicking Start and My computer. If the used and free space does not show then right click on your C:\ drive and click Properties in the popup. 25% free space is nice, under 20 and you find the computer slowing and the activity light flashing a lot.

thanks owbist, my 4GB comment was rhetorical. It just bugs me that software/web developers create bloated stuff that require lots of memory.

I have oodles of disk space. My paging size is 2x recommended. I've perfmon'd, defragged and observed paging and processes plenty. I keep taskmgr icon in systray and watch it constantly. No viruses (although a scan itself puts quite the strain on PC, as does backups. I have to leave the room, the noise is disconcerting!) My PC is just plain old. 1/2 GB is just not enough for modern bloated busy-body apps.

My new laptop takes it all in stride, but I can't get used to it. I prefer desktop ergonomics. I might have to bite the bullet and upgrade.
