Windows 7 not waking from sleep mode?

A couple of times I couldn't get windows 7 to wake from sleep mode. I clicked the enter key, moved the mouse and nothing would wake it up. Computer wouldn't shut down with the power button either. Maybe I didn't give it enough time?
Finally as a last resort I unplugged the entire system.
I thought sure I had lost my computer because the monitor came back with a frozen, funky look multiple colored stripes. (sorry, that's the only way I know to describe it.) I WAS logged into a website when I put it to sleep. Should I close all windows before putting to sleep? Wondering if that was the problem? I should add that after several seconds the screen came up showing the page I had been on. It was frozen briefly then came around.

No known viruses id being reported. Just had a couple of small issues with malware cleaned up. Nothing much there.

I have been reading on that site. Trying to sort it out.

One more question..under my power options where it says choose what the power buttons do? Mine was set to put computer to sleep when I push the power button. Shouldn't that be set to turn computer off instead? I changed that option but now unsure if I should have since this setting must have come from factory setting. IDK

Not necessarily shaxhome, some monitors can get stuck in displaying that mode and not display the video like the desktop. Dell has a history of that and so does LG. Your best option as has been said is to try another monitor first. If changing the monitor does not produce results, then it's time to look at the video card driver or on board video driver. The VGA connector on the back of the computer is usually the blue connector 15 pins, the DVI cable is usually a white connector on the back of the computer. Snidely, Me??? Think what you may as I cannot speak to it. On this thread no one has brought up the concept of work environment so that perspective was not addressed. My home system is on 24/7. It has a collage of pictures of my grandchildren as a screen saver for my pleasure. For no other reason. No type of power management is used. In the past, the consensus of members here was they only use power management in the hopes of protecting the system to make it last longer. During my entire attendance at work my system is engaged even when not attended. It is the secured database portals which time me out after inactivity unless I do it manually. I have never seen anyone leave a laptop unattended in public. My recollection is they are actively being used, directly monitored, or shut down and stored. In any of these cases power management is not necessary. Finally, there are only two schools of thought that are certain for all; death and that politicians waste taxpayer money. It's a little complex because two or more controlling software's might be trying to control the machine's behavior. First educate yourself about what brings it out of sleep mode. I know that the modem can (by a phone call coming in the comptuer can be woken up so as to take the call be it a fax or internet) Since dialup is dead to most people know that the network card can work the same way. So turn off the 'wake upon lan" or similar setting that means this: When the LAN (network card) gets a request to transfer data it wakes up the computer. You can shut this off but where? It can be set in many places. The bios might have a setting. Windows might have a setting for it. And any software for the network card itself could have a setting. (This is often part of the Windows setting section) Go poke and search these bits first. Without knowing the network and modem cards are not going to wake up the computer you are wasting time. Help I have the same problem but it's EVERY weekend and it's MY house and MY bed. at first it was just saturday night but now his ex has taken to last minute asking my fiance to take his 8 year old daughter on friday night's. the first night she asked to sleep with us he got mad, he was still enjoying our cuddle time. i felt bad cause our relationship was so new i told him she was scared and it was ok. WHAT A MISTAKE! it hasn't stopped since, 3 months. he doesn't even try to put her in her own bed. if i do stay in the bed i usually end up on the couch. the other night i went to sleep in her bed but could not fall asleep. i thought screw this, that is my bed. they were both asleep but i pushed myself in next to him. i don't know what to make of it. i can't think she's afraid. it's a small house her room is literally 10 feet down the hall. we leave a light on in her room, the bathroom light on and both bedroom doors wide open. i've talked to him about this twice and my plan was to just go sleep somewhere else but now i'm thinking he can sleep with her in the little twin bed or if he can't be man enough to stand up to her and lets her come to our bed he can sleep in the middle so i can still be close to him. she does this whenever we are together. if we are sitting on the couch she insists on sitting between us. when we took her to the movies she let us know well in advance she was sitting in the middle. i hate to sound like a spoiled child. i just don't know what i am doing. i never dated a man with an ex wife let alone children so all this is new to me. he doesn't have these things to deal with as my children are grown. i think it is even harder for me because when my son was the same age i had moved in with a man and he was still dealing with his father's and my divorce. he would come to our bed almost every night. my boyfriend at the time would get very angry. i worked really hard to get my son to sleep in his bed through the night even as it broke my heart.of course i wanted to comfort him and make him feel safe. i feel like i am in a terrible position

By the way- I have the moon button for sleep mode and I've always just used that for sleep.

No. To turn a PC off using the off button you need to hold the button in for 4 seconds.

Why do you feel the need to put the computer to sleep, it will do so automatically after the time period you have set in your options.

About putting the computer to sleep? I was wondering the same thing, why do I even do that? Like you said it will do that automatically anyway.

You should not turn your PC off at the power button, but rather do a proper shut down at your START on taskbar.

Aputernut is correct, I should have added that caveat. Pressing the off button for 4 seconds is the last thing if all else fails.

Yes, I do know you're not suppose to shut computer down with the power button but is was an all else failed situation and even that didn't work.
Step two for me was to unplug the thing to shut it down and that's probably a terrible thing to do. But eventually it did start back up after several scary seconds. I just hope I don't have that problem again but it does seem to be an issue for some with windows 7.

Does windows 7 Control Panel / Troubleshooting ... have an item for 'Power ? I might run that .

one of the latest updates for windows 7 was bugged and makes the graphic card not wake up again after sleep mode!

if u have a laptop take out the battery and wait for the laptop to empty its power supply and then put the battery in again and turn it on! on a stationary unplugg the powercord and wait

this will fix the problem! i experience the same thing on my laptop and this ALLWAYS fix the problem!
