I officially hate Windows 8.

Whenever I am scrolling on my laptop the screen size shrinks and enlarges on its own. Is there a way to lock in a screen size so it doesn't do this anymore?

And also, when I scroll to the right top the menu pops up and usually opens itself, and if I scroll to the left the other closed screens pop up and sometimes open themselves. I want the old options back, like pressing the Start button to open all that. Any way to go back to the old school screen?

When evaluating software or hardware, it makes sense to ignore the popular press, especially the tech blogs and to an extent, consumer opinion. Change is difficult for us humans and the early reviews of XP bear it out. Below is a snapshot of cnet's Windows XP review back in 2001. I got to this page using the web archive. Note that cnet bemoans the fact that a user can only load XP on one computer. Really cnet? And note user opinions: 48% disliked XP after its first several months. Microsoft was roundly criticized for not having an OS that would work across all platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone. Now Win 8 is negatively reviewed for not having a start button. Anyone remember when the criticism was that Windows had a start button? I use Win7 home premium on this computer and Win7 Pro on my daytrading rig. The next computer I buy will have Windows 8. I find this thread discouraging. I started using Charlie's Soap due to recommendations on this forum, but the vehemence of the opinions here is hard to figure?! Does anyone consider why they have such strong opinions about laundry detergent? Or whether they feel these strongly worded comments are actually helpful to the forum? Clearly, some of the difference with results has to have something to do with the difference in water from one community to another. Hard water, soft water, heavily treated water have to make a big difference in how a detergent works. I have seen a few comments here that point out the basic reasoning that many people had in using Charlie's soap, but it bears repeating. Using a detergent that has fewer harsh chemicals and less negative effect on the environment and the water supply. And the second big reason was trying to escape the overabundance of products that cause reactions to the skin from who knows what ingredients. What I want to use as a laundry detergent, is a product that cleans clothes well but is made from natural ingredients that do not affect the water supply or the environment. And definitely, a product that rinses completely out of the clothes so that there is no residue to sit on the skin and either provoke a reaction or be absorbed into the body. It would be more helpful to me, to read comments from someone who actually knows and understands what is in these competing products and what affect they have on not just cleaning the clothes, but do they affect the environment and do they leave a residue that can cause a problem for the skin? And I'm also trying to avoid fragrances. I really dislike them across the board, unless they are natural fragrances, as in coming from essential oils or something. I don't wear perfume and I find it difficult to spend time in a room with someone who does wear it. Bottom line - this thread did not help me figure out which detergent is going to help me have the laundry experience I am looking for.

Many companies do like gregbradley describes and continue to run Windows 7 across their entire company so that the IT staff only have to install and maintain one version of the operating system. Any newly purchased computers are set up with the desired, stable older version. Then when it makes sense for that company and the risks are well known, they may decide to move to a newer version. Many companies decided to completely avoid Windows 8 since the perceived risks outweighed the perceived benefits. Many companies have decided to continue this approach with Windows 10, at least until the risks and benefits are more clearly known. According to an article I read recently Microsoft has just decided, unilaterally, that henceforth any newly purchased computers (with a processor newer than some arbitrary date) will only be sold with Windows 10. For the companies that prefer to upgrade when it makes sense, Microsoft is essentially saying "F--- you" I may be misremembering or mischaracterizing that article, I'll try to find it again and post a link here.

Windows 8 should automatically reset your screen resolution if you change the monitor. If you are unsure about the resolution for your monitor model do a search for the make and model you have.

If however you have vision problems then try the Microsoft magnifier. The link takes you to a 90 second video howto to use the magnifier.

Edit: Wow, something else I learned watching that video. The narrator said to start typing 'magnifier' from the Start screen, well I tried typing a name of a person I knew was in a few files on my computer and it found every instance. A pretty slick tool methinks :~)

As you say, Windows 8 is easy to hate. It seems like a the 90's version, even my skype is difficult to update for this Windows 8. I don't understand why Microsoft have made it so hard.

Owbist, this is on my laptop. If I am touching the scroll pad with my right hand and have my finger just barely touching the left click, it enlarges or shrinks. It is too sensitive, any way to lock in a size?

Sorry cornsnakelover, I have no real experience with laptops, when fixing any I always use a mouse.

I Googled 'touchpad sensitivity win 8' sans quotes and got 230,000+ hits, you might try that and find a tutorial written in a way you are comfortable with.

I have a windows 7 laptop and it does the same thing when I'm typing, because my hands seem to drag over the mouse pad part of the laptop. I have found that if I lock the mouse pad it will stop it from happening. I use a cordless mouse with it anyway so don't need for it to be on. Hope this helps some how.
