It's official. I need an exorcist! Decor advice for new layout

16 years ago

First, thanks to everyone who has contributed to my kitchen design so far. I've gotten great ideas from many here and want you all to know that I really appreciate your help.

Just when I thought I had it all figured out someone started a thread about corner cabinets. In a nutshell, our layout was a basic u-shaped kitchen which, while very functional, bothered me because I hate working in corners. I read this thread and really started to feel uneasy. Then there was another thread about having a change of vision. This spoke to me as well because I started to think about this basic u-shaped, painted white kitchen and how much it was going to cost and I got even more uneasy. There was no WOW factor. Then I read yet another thread that added a link to David T Smith and I had a epiphany. I needed a layout that would let me have mixed cabinet finishes and some interesting visual elements. Well, here it is and I really, really like it. (please don't mind the poor elevations)

The layout:

{{!gwi}}

The cooktoop wall

Oven wall

refrigerator wall

birdseye view

I realize I lose some counter space and storage space (about 24") with this layout, but I'm willing to give that up because the counters and cabinets I end up with are so accessible and the kitchen will work so well with two cooks (DH often helps). What I need now, however, is some help with the decorative elements. I'm doing the cabinets in quarter sawn white oak but I want to paint some white or stain some in a darker finish. I thought the hutch type cabinet next to refrigerator would be a good candidate for this or the cooktop cabinet or even the run with the sink.

This layout offers lots of potential to do something very interesting but it needs to be done right and I'm not sure I'm talented enough to do that. I don't want to take the time required to hire a designer as we're already way behind schedule so I'm appealing to those on this forum with decorating expertise. This has been going on too, too long. I'm ordering cabinets by the end of the week no matter what just so I can expel the demons and get my life back so any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated (before my head starts spinning 360 degrees and I scare away my family). TIA!
