Connecting two laptops?

I want to restore this laptop with the cd so I need to store my picture files and other things some where. I have a lot and have no idea where my zip drive is and I'm too lazy to dig up rewritable cds.

The laptop I want to connect this one to to move my files doesn't have internet connection so my question is, is there a way to connect two laptops so I can transfer the files I want to save to the other laptop and then be able to transfer them back when I'm done?

I have used those cables and they may or may not work well for you, I would suggest instead using a usb flash thumb drive, they are so cheap now and are really the easy way to go to move stuff from one to the other, IF you have a big lots near you I was just there and they had them for extremely cheap. YOu can also use memory cards like you use in a camera some method just put the blank card in the card reader and move your files to it then put in the other pc and take files off it.
In fact ecost has this 12 GIG usb drive for $19.99 right now on their hot deals sale. 12 Gig is a lot of room.
Kaser 12GB USB 2.0 Drive

here is a lot of flash drives at buy.com where I have bought several Kingston ones.

Many have free shipping.

If I had to spend my money on something I would choose the usb type drives instead of the cables.

One solution is to purchase sofware for this purpose. I found "Audio Recorder 2.0 Deluxe by honestech" at Wal-Mart for $59. It included the hardware interface that is connected between your computer's USB port and the playback device. The playback device must have an output port such as "line out" or "a headphone jack". I haven't installed mine yet, so haven't discover if there are other issues.

I had a Dell Lattitude laptop for a while that had an S video output. I hooked it up to the TV. I had to find and install the correct drivers for it to work. Now we use my wife's computer. It has an S video output. Also had to find and install the correct drivers for it. But now we can download TV shows and watch them on TV. The laptop used a stretch function to just extend the desktop onto the TV screen. The desktop computer can only output to either the monitor or to the TV screen. Not both. I actually like it this way better. All of this is setup in Display properties. Pooh Bear

Hi, mlou_51... grandms is correct that most wireless routers are fairly easy to setup. I know the Linksys comes with very good instructions, both the quick guide and the users manual. And, it has a cd for doing the setup. Basically, you would just replace your wired router with the wireless one. You can use the enclosed cd to help set up the new router. I'm presuming you would not want to set it up manually. After you follow the instructions from the cd, including, I believe the security settings, you should be able to go on-line. Of course, you can pay 75 for your time. The tech will set up everything and is responsible for ensuring it is working properly. I can only guess what happened in your house two years ago. I don't know what the installation agreement was between Adams Networking and you. But, I would bet that the wired router was included in the installation. A wireless router would probably have been an additional $50-100. Even if they had put in a wireless router two years ago, today it would probably work okay. But, it would be slow by today's standards. I suspect you would not be pleased. So, the bottom line is you can install yourself and presuming everything works, you will be pleased and proud. Whether you do it yourself, or someone else installs it, you will enjoy the freedom to use your laptop anywhere around your house. Additionally, as bpgreen said, you should be able to connect at some coffee houses, hotels, and some fast food places. Take a LAN cable and you can connect to wired outlets when available. Hope this helps, :-) --majickmann

For sure you need to select the right output on your computer, in Windows that's often done by right clicking the desktop and selecting "Properties". In one of the tabs you can select an external monitor. Sound should work without changing any settings, try with a headphone first if your audio is switched on. About the RCA plugs: red and white are audio, yellow is composite video. Hope this helps at least a bit.

The trouble is, if you have an older laptop, big number flashdrives ie 4GB and maybe 2GB and larger may not be recognized by the computer

Right, on the old stuff compatibility...
I have a 2GB Memory Stick, a PNY brand. Best I can recall I used it to move data from an old, something like a 500 mbps cpu, with W98SE, and it worked. At the slower USB 1, or whatever the original USB speed is called.

I really don't want to spend even $20 to do this. I tried using a cd-rw but even blank it didn't have enough room. And that was when I split up files to get them to fit.

Jerry, I have no idea what any of what you said means! :o I don't know much about computers.

ok if you have high speed internet one thing you can do is just move them to an online storage facility then when you need them go there and access your storage area and retrieve your files. I have 1 that I like that provide quite a lot of storage for free. Adrive. Diino gives 2gig free
Diino online storage and backup with free email and free blog included
Adrive gives 50gig free www.adrive.com

since it is pictures the other option is to just move them all to an online photo site like imageshack, or photobucket, or winkflash. all free.

here is a whole list of online storage

Also music files too.

Thank you! That's a big help! How come you like Diino if it gives a lot less space than Adrive?
