Connecting laptop to TV

I have a Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000 with a Video Connector

and a Sony WEGA TV with same. I have tried to connect the two. On the TV screen I get a bright white Pg vs dark but icons or imput from the computer. Can I also use the S video connectors.

I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone walk me thru the process of connecting the two so I can have the desktop on the TV?

I dont know your knotebook but ;just a quick search turned up cnet quick review saying...the Inspiron 6000 offers just about everything an average home user will need. You get a headphone and microphone jack; a Secure Digital card reader; an S-Video output for connecting to a TV;

My laptop when hooked to tv I have to right click desktop and somewhere in there choose which screen to use.

Thanks for response. I will try the S video output and right click on desktop - Did you have to do anything else the first time you connected your laptop to your TV? Any set up?

I found specs for that laptop and it does seem to have an S-video connector, so you should be in good shape. There's probably a key combination that is needed to switch display from the laptop built in display to the S-video. On one laptop I have, it's Fn-F8. On another, it's Fn-F3 (both of these are Dells). There may be a key that has a picture of a monitor or something that will control this. I'll see if I can find any information about the key needed for your laptop.

I don't think your laptop has HDMI out but it does have S-video out, correct? You could probably pickup an S-video cable pretty cheaply. Here's a video which I didn't actually watch but it looks like it probably explains how to do exactly what you want to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vz-_wsrsAY Personally, I just run a regular monitor cord(male on both ends) between my desktop computer and my TV. Assuming your Panasonic has PC input, that may be an option. As for enabling multiple displays, that should be covered in the video? Hehe, yeah, good nose owbist. I understand it's possible to report SPAM but I'm much too lazy. Forum needs a "Report as SPAM" button but I suppose it will probably never get it.

This is only a guess but could it be possible that the mac can automatically adjust for the screen resolution and display of your CRT but the HP laptop cannot? See the following link for more information. I copied and pasted a bit of it below: "If your computer's video card has been designed to work well with HDTV, it might come with its own software for setting screen resolution to match the 16:9 format." and "You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may appear distorted." You either have to change the input select on the dvd recorder to s-video (and you may find there is a set of audio inputs separate for the s-video) or you may have to enable the s-video output on the laptop - there may be a control panel or something in your settings for that. Your HP handbook should tell you how. Good luck with it.

I dont remember.
Have only done it once or twice, I think that's about it though. Looks sucky for normal computing.

I dont know what you're sending but ;; If you have windows media encoder you can send wiggly stuff much smoother. Its a free download ...uses some processor power, but works great.

I had a Dell Lattitude laptop for a while
that had an S video output. I hooked it up to the TV.
I had to find and install the correct drivers for it to work.

Now we use my wife's computer. It has an S video output.
Also had to find and install the correct drivers for it.
But now we can download TV shows and watch them on TV.

The laptop used a stretch function to just
extend the desktop onto the TV screen.
The desktop computer can only output to either
the monitor or to the TV screen. Not both.
I actually like it this way better.

All of this is setup in Display properties.
