Best electric range under $500

My son recently married and bought a house...the house was a HUD foreclosure that was bought and went through some needed refurbishing by the guy he bought it from but a new range wasn't part of it...The seller did just enough to get it to pass inspection but it is really not in good working order.

They would eventually like to change to gas cooktop but that costs too much now.

I said I would buy an early Christmas present if they would be happy with one for 500 or less...Something that is decent quality for short term, if not for 10 yrs...

I don't trust Craig's List after some stories in my local area paper --- and the Sears outlet is not showing enough of a price difference to make their ranges that much of a deal...at least to me...

Any suggestions for electric ranges that have decent ceramic cooktop and oven that will bake decently? Not induction---they can't afford new cookwear anyway...

I can order from Sears, Home Depot, or Lowe's and get bonus air miles so would prefer one of those main stream sources...

Not sure about space available/dimensions in their kitchen but will ask my son since he is the cook of the couple...

It looks like a 30 inch range...

Ranges come in 24-inch, 30-inch (actually 29 & 7/8, 56 and so on. So, if the existing stove looks like a 30 inch, the a standard 30 inch will fit. If you have any questions, get the model numbers of your candidates for replacement and look for someplace to download the installation You want to make sure that the 240v instructions. is in the proper area.

All that being said, I suspect that finding a radiant smoothtop is going to be difficult when you arelooking for a price at or below $500. That you don't want to go scratch-n-dent (ding-n-bing) cna further complicate thigs
Everybody I know who bought an "inexpensive" smoothtop jad t spend a couple hundred above your budget for a smoothtop that was not dog slow and had an oven that heated

Can this wait until the next bg holiday sale (Columbs day?)

Otherwise, I would be inclied to look at coil burner models. Plain, simpe, durable, mare technology.relatively evenly. Also seem to have beeter (more even) ovens tan smoothop competitors. Frankly, I have no idea why coil burner stove seem to have beet ovens in the lower end of the price scale but, somehow, they do.

In that price range, I would be inclined to look for a coil burner unit. Plain, simple and (mostly) durable.It's mature technology. I would look at Hotpoint (a GE brand). For a about $550 you can get a Kenmore 90313 coil burner stove with convection oven. For about $450 you can get a Hotpoint which used to be Consumer Report's highest rated coil burner. (It will be more if you want it stainless.)

Wound up spending more than I anticipated or my son said would really be necessary...
he wanted a self cleaning oven with hidden element and cooktop with a power element...a power element is not found on range under 600
and a hidden heating element also adds to price
I read some negative reviews of the "steam cleaning" process so went with conventional style of self-cleaning...
I know some people don't have high ratings for that brand but read mostly positive reviews...

got it from Lowe's which has free delivery and take away of the old range..
Sears charges 70 for delivery and 10 to take away...
Ordered a Frigidaire LGEF3033KW
he did not really want a convection but that was bonus
On sale for 647 and change--
They seem to be pretty happy with it...Lowe's reviews were 12 of 13 very positive so hopeful it will be good unit for them...

In our last house we had a GE Profile ceramic-top range that never gave us a problem. We were quite happy with it, in fact, for 8 or 9 years. It didn't have convection. With our large family, it was important for our new kitchen to have convection for multi-rack cooking (which I did out of necessity in the non-convection with mixed results.) Way back when I first started our plans, I knew I wanted more burners than 1 range could offer, and 2 ovens, so considered getting 2 of the Profile ranges with convection as an economical choice. However, the convection fan in the Profiles (at that time, anyway...about 3 yrs ago) intruded on the oven space so that it was only about 13 1/2" deep...No way to fit my 16" pizza pan, for instance, or a double row of bread pans, so it wasn't an option that made sense for us. My point is, that I think convection is worth it if you can get it in your budget (looking at Profile ranges on us-appliance.com, it certainly looks possible), but take some of your pans to make sure they fit. I see they now offer a concealed element, so maybe they've also redesigned more of the interior so the fan isn't such a space hog. Best wishes.

from reading on here it seems even the very expensive ones have lots of problems. that's one thing that changed me from getting a DW drawer to a KA 18". If I put that much money into a drawer and it has problems I'll be stuck w/o one. If I don't sink top dollar into it I'll have some put back to replace it and I also won't feel near as bad about it. Mine will probably break down from lack of use - lol! I don't imagine I'll run it more than twice a week. i've rethought going for an induction burner or 2 w/ wall oven also. for what little cooking I do that's way too much money to spend. even tho those you listed are in the lower range pricewise it's still a bunch of money to sink into an appliance to have it be a crappy unit or not last very long. I guess those making them are preplanning for future sales... but think of our landfills. ugh - it's so wasteful!

Why get a stripped down Fratelli with plastic knobs when you can get a real Fratelli with steel knobs for under $2500? Here are two: http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/FREV905S.html (also see link below--I'm emphasizing this one because it has the larger oven of the two) http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/FRPN365SS.html I just ordered another Fratelli model myself--haven't used it yet, obviously, but I saw one in person and it was solid and beautiful, and you have to love those reviews (17 people giving it an average of 4.3 stars out of 5). The big reason I got a Fratelli, apart from the looks (I got the Royal Chiantishire, a very particular look) and the great reviews... ok wait, there were two big reasons apart from those: (1) It has almost no electronic parts. On these ranges I linked to here, the clock is the only electronic part. None of those fancy wave-touch control doodads that are 99% certain to break as soon as the warranty expires. Basically it's all mechanical, and I would expect that to be much more reliable, although having not even received the range yet much less used it for years I couldn't really say. (2) It's got everything you would need, unless you are a professional chef or so close to a professional chef that you truly do need 18,000 BTU burners. Personally I just saw no point forking over $5000-$10,000 for some uber-powerful range that not only has features I don't need (do I care that the spaghetti water boils 2 minutes faster than it will on my Fratelli? No, I do not) but also will force me to invest another $1500 in a range hood capable of dealing with that much power. Not to mention, another $1000 or so reworking my ventilation system to provide makeup air--my local building codes require makeup air for any vent hood over 400CFM. But add up the BTU's on the Fratelli and you find that you can get away with a 400CFM hood... which saves me not only the cost of the high-powered hood, but also the cost of reworking the ventilation system. BTW, you may also be able to get a better deal with AJ Madison. I was originally going to order my Fratelli from them, but they're out of stock on the one I want. But when I was going to order it--and at the time it was $2999--the guy I talked to on the phone said he would throw in a free five-year extended warranty. Broan has the worst stats (CFM + sones) of all the hoods that I have been looking at for the last year, and it's not even the cheapest. It may be that most sound like jet engines regardless of stats; I don't know. There certainly are a lot of hoods out there in all price ranges. Be sure to check out the vent requirements - size, shape and location (top, rear). That alone may narrow your choice. The Costco suggestion is good. Try Zephyr, too, not its website which lists only the really pricey ones. Best Buy (Pacific Sales) , Lowes, ABT online, carry the less expensive but still well rated. The less expensive Zephyrs have names like Tornado and Typhoon.

Well shoot. If you're in southern california, they can have mine for $300. It is in pristine shape but didn't fit in with the kitchen remodel. It is currently sitting in the back porch waiting to be put on cr@igslist.

Not sure what you're going to find new for under $500. My new slide-in electric stove just cost $1700. Yikes!
