Basement Bathroom Gone Wrong

We are currently building our dream home and there was a big mistake made in the basement bathroom. It was supposed to be a jack and jill bath between two bedrooms. We changed the way the bathroom was set up with the builder. The plumber plumbed in the new design but forgot the shower drain. The cement floor guys were not given them the new design by the builder. They followed the plan and poured cement over where the drain should have been and convert a sink to a shower drain. There are 3 parties at fault and all are trying to think of what we should do without tearing out concrete. Right now it is a mess. What can be done? I am sick to my stomach right now. The simplest option is having separate rooms for the toilet and shower with double sinks in the common area between the rooms. If the toilet and shower are in the same room together they are 8 ft apart and it just looks silly.

1) It's your "dream home".

2) If the change in plans was properly conveyed by you to your builder, then that's it. It's on him to get it fixed. It doesn't matter how he works it out with the plumber or with the other trades. It's on him to work that part out with them, at his cost, or split with them. There's no cash out of your pocket.

4) Even if it was your fault and it had to be repaired at your expense, see 1) and 3) above.

The time to repair and the funds to repair it will be small in the grand scheme of things. Otherwise you'll grimace every time you walk in to the bathroom. And once you stop walking in there because it depresses you so, your kids will depress you by asking "why is my bathroom so screwed up?"

Sit down with your builder and work out a time line for him getting it repaired. If he hems, write him a letter or email. Seeing things in writing make it official and starts the legal clock ticking. If you properly conveyed the change to him, then you're in charge. Start running the show. The longer it takes, the harder the concrete gets and the more entrenched the excuses become.

"What can be done?"

At least some of the concrete needs to come up and the drains need to be redone. It is not that complicated and the only real cost will be time and labor. Just tell your builder it needs to be fixed. His job is to coordinate all the trades and make sure the house is built to spec.

I spent weeks looking at color swatches for most of the rooms in our house. I picked a caramel/palomino color. Somehow I missed that it turns pink when exposed to the right kind of artificial light. This is especially evident in my laundry room. I got some bulbs in the coolest spectrum I could find. The room feels pretty sterile (even when it's dirty!) but the pink is gone. If you're getting gold, I'd try cooling the spectrum down a wee bit.

We have a 36x42 inch fiber fab shower stall. The shower head is on the side and there's a two inch built in shelf across the back wall. It also has a built in curtain rod that is handy-er than I thought it would be. I think it was in the $650 range and we're very pleased with it. Combined with a delta shower head/ slide bar combo it's perfect for my family from the three year old to my 6'+, 300#+ husband. I actually like it so much more than most of the ubiquitous fake marble bathrooms that are usually posted here. It has some personality. I think when you start using it and get towels and bath rugs, products on your niche shelf, etc. you might be surprised how much you love it! What is the big black thing above the niche? That's the only thing that I think detracts from your design. When I adjust the page so I only see the floor and niche, it looks way better with that big black hole out of the picture. I can't imagine what it is.

Not going to lie Rip the darn floor, it was a mistake. Not that vanity either. Put the same tile as shower walls on the bathroom floor. AND simplify the vanity and darker please....... Less bulky hardware for that shower door. You are all over the place /in look and feel. : ) Fix it before you go further. Floor is a re do. You don't like it now, and you won't when you finish. Not the worst mistake in your life, just a floor re do. With an adjustment to the door and vanity selection to make the entire room one cohesive look....and feel. Truth ? "Paint and towels" won't save you from remorse.: ) sorry. You're not wrong in your assessment of the oopsie.

I agree with mongo. It's your dream home and it wasn't done to the dream specs.

Have them fix it to the way YOU want it. YOU have to live there.
