It's almost here! We're very happy to tell you that we've hit the last big milestone on the way to Windows 7: release to manufacturing. I got this E- Mail from Microsoft because I am running Windows 7 Evaluation copy for 1 year....

So far it is a very nice operating System, Good bye Vista....

I await W7.

I'm at work at the moment so I don't have my bookmarked pages available. W7 is not an actual new release, but rather an upgrade to Vista. Vista's architecure was security based where W7's is going to start with the Vista foundation but be be performanced focused. The available editions which we have become accustomed to are reported to be changing their content. The identifying names are pretty much the same, but the versions' capabilities have been refined.

In all as I explain to people, the release of W7is quite similar to the release of Win98SE in improving Win98OE.

Personally I haven't found anything wrong with my Vista system and I do forcast the habitual release "uproar" will be present with W7. I say this as I get the impression from talking with users, and reading posts and columns that the XP users are complacent with their systems and are not going to be too responsive and comfortable with any type of change.

I like Windows 7, I am running the evaluation copy on this computer as a dual boot with XP. There was a sale recently on the program, I paid $125 Canadian for the Windows 7 Professional upgrade copy which will be delivered in October.

I am building a new computer for the new operating system, my first in many years. Everything on my XP computer will move over with no problems according to the compatibility test except Alcohol 120. Skype has minor issues as does my canada.com web based email address both both work even with this older machine so perhaps updated drivers will soon be available.

AVG seems to have shot themselves in the foot this time. Progress means updates of course. I upgraded to AVG8 and somewhere around that time minor troubles started. For a few weeks things were not right and I was unable to pinpoint the cause. I remove a few programs and brought a few back and tried a few others, one that is no longer on my computer is AVG. Not suggesting they are the cause but with the 'adjustments' I have made my issues seem to be resolved. No doubt I will return to AVG somewhere down the road but for now I am quite happy without it.

there are ways to make vista more like xp you need to search google for "make vista like xp" you will find lots of tips and tricks. There are some threads here on GW that have posted several links to many of those so you can try doing a search here too. Tumbleweed, I bought Windows 7 just because I could. My main computer was at least 5 years old and had been given to me because the motherboard caught fire. As it was 2 years old at the time of the fire it was prudent for the company who owned it to buy a new machine rather than repair because of downtime. So I got a machine with XP Pro free and for the price of the replacement motherboard and a little of my time rebuilding I had a reasonably good machine. It has probably been close to 8 years since I built myself a new computer and Win 7 was my excuse to be extravagant, hee hee. There was no need for a new computer or operating system, just an I want situation and computers are my only vice Jane_ny, if this computer is the one you refer to on this thread then you probably would be well advised not to try upgrading it. What would you gain? Your comments on that thread suggest this is a very good computer for your needs even if it is 4 years old. To pay to have things like the install and replacing the video card would likely cost over half the price of a new computer plus you would have a worthless copy of XP because it is tied to that particular motherboard and cannot be used in any other machine. One more small note to consider, as your machines are used in business the XP computer has a book value of almost nil now and any new computer will be bought with pre tax dollars

I have currently 4 tablets, one that is strictly an ereader, I got each of us one, very inexpensive. My husband loves it and uses his daily, I really don't use that one anymore but it will be his backup. I got the first pandigital novel 7 inch tablet which was a great tablet but it is outdated as far as the version of android on it goes, that one I passed down to a family member. I also have a 7 inch Sylvania that was also inexpensive which I used a lot and still do on occasion, that one will not be updated either but is fine for my husband to use to read the kindle books on and play solitaire and check email or Google something which is about the extent of his use. The one I use daily is my Vizio Vtab 1008 tablet it is still being updated and it will get the latest version of android ics in the near future, Vizio mentioned that recently when showing the new 10 inch tablet they are releasing soon. I love my tech toys but I don't spend a lot of money on them. The Vizio is the most expensive one and I got it as a refurbished unit for a very good price, luckily it was perfect. The laptop is a gift I got for my husband, I rarely use it, I do the updates on it. I do have an Acer netbook that I did use quite a bit, and still do when I travel, I prefer the keyboard. For daily use my desktop is custom made has 2 hard drives one with Linux one with windows. I use Mepis Linux pretty much exclusively for daily use. I do have a couple of other towers but they are backup. Luckily my husband supports my addict.... Um I mean hobbies lol. He has been urging me to get the nexus already! I am resisting so far. I guess it is my one vice. It could be worse lol

I ordered the $50 pre purchase version. Didnt see anything extra in pro that I might need that isnt available freeware or with fairly simple other methods. I don't expect any major improvements over Vista actually, but maybe it'll suprise me.
With my luck might be given some version before or shortly after it arrives. Thats ok, for $50 - its a pretty safe bet.

I brought this thread back for those of you that are wanting/using windows 7 you might want to read this article on how to get the trial period for much longer and how to get an updated version by using a handy little trick, very neat.
