I'm not an expert, but I let my friends or family use my wireless. They can't access my computer - how is it different than using a hot spot at Starbucks? They are just using your signal, not your computer.

Thanks, Jane, for your response. What you say seems to make sense. I guess what I was thinking of is the warning about being sure your wi-fi is secured. From what I have read, if you are not securd, a undesirable person could access the contents of your computer and get financial info, as well as other unfo and cause all kinds of mayhem.. So, I wondered if another computer allowed on my wi-fi could do the same.

Hello, All! Hope everyone had a nice holiday season! Like Rosey, I managed to suck up all the local germs while visiting my kids and grandkids... the younger of which are walking virus factories interacting daily with all manner of other neighborhood children and schoolmates... and came home with a nasty chest cold/flu combination. The old guy and I are both sick. I'm glad for things like Vick's VapoRub and antibiotics! I'm a believer in modern pharmaceuticals, as long as I know what they contain and how they work, and whether or not there are more side effects than good effects! My grandson was full blown sick while we were there, complete with fever that makes your ears red and hot, a horrid cough from a tight chest with infection, packed sinuses, runny nose, chapped lips, the whole nine yards. It's the kind of sick that makes your skin hurt! You know you need to eat, but you can't stomach anything. We felt so bad for the poor little guy... and now that we have it, we know what a trooper he was! I'm off to a bad start with the new year... my monitor burnt up, I got sick, and to top everything off, I managed to leave my camera behind when we packed up to come home. I think I did, anyway... I can't find it. On the positive side, H. "Minerva" has kindly waited for me, and is just now starting to open her large buds! And nothing died while we were gone, meaning that my orchids hung in there with the watering I gave them before we left for Christmas. I also have a Gloriosa vine growing tall and looking to bloom, I think. I had thought the corm died in the pot, but when I gave it a small drink to moisten the medium a bit, it began to grow! It will be interesting to see if it does bloom, as it's growing in an east facing window. Nice photos, everyone! Josh, that is such a wonderful Catt! Well... trying to get caught up with reading and posting, taking my time through this cold. I sure hope no one else gets it... it's a nasty one! Talk at ya all later!

Maybe I will change my mind in the future, but for now I will move forward with the "what's mine is mine, what's yours is yours" attitude. There are NO garantees in life. I never want to be legally bound to anyone ever again...by marriage, real estate or otherwise. My current husband was the same way. He never wanted to marry again. Eventually, when the hurt wears off you too may change your mind. These days, to even last 10 years is against the odds. A lot can happen in 10 years, people change, married or not. Hopefully, you won't lose a lot & hopefully you can recover from this financially. Hi, OP here. My apologies. ItÂs my fault the topic diverted. I honestly did not mean for this topic to go the way it has. Waking up this morning and reading the latest input, taking in everyone's views on marriage / non marriage. There is a lot of great feedback. No one knows what happened with your relationship, hopefully not being married will be to your advantage. I am 3 times married myself, 1st time too young, 2nd too blind, 3rd much older & wiser. I've seen a lot in my 40 years, people change whether you have that piece of paper or not. Trying to work through things depends on what the situation is. Should I have tried to work out marriage 1? No. Marriage 2 - staying wasn't an option - verbal abuse turned to physical abuse. Currently 8 years that I'm with my husband. He's a good guy, more so then my other choices. He has his moments, some how we've worked through some really rough times. It wasn't that piece of paper that made me stay, being disabled & having no income has made me stick it out. After almost divorcing a few times we're doing really well. It isn't at all clear to me how the OP would be in a better position if she and the BF had married. If anything, their finances would be even more entangled. I have to agree. Divorce #2 for me was costly. Doing a google of Connecticut divorce law, it may be to the OP's benefit that she was not married... Division of Marital Property - Connecticut is referred to as an "all property equitable distribution state." In Connecticut, the Court has the power to "assign to either the husband or wife all or any part of the estate of the other." Conn. Gen. Stats. Â§ 46b-81. Any property, therefore, regardless of when or how acquired, can be re-distributed by the Court. Conn doesn't recognize common law, so that's a plus. I'm interested to hear what the attorney says. Side topic: Salgal, it's a shame your ex didn't tell his half-sib WHY he dropped her. She must have been terribly hurt. What you've described is the natural familial attraction that bonds families. When it doesn't take place between young children within their natural families, and they first meet as adults, the love and familiarity sometimes feels sexual. At my search and support group we always warned reuniting adoptees and birthfamily members about this. Knowing that these powerful feelings could be confusing helped to prevent some terrible heartaches. Where people misinterpreted the feelings and acted on them sexually, it destroyed the development of a genuine family bond. An adoptee, having lived a whole life knowing he is 'different', separated from his genetic kin, is especially vulnerable to mistaking powerful feelings of connection. (This is entirely separate from an adoptee's love for the adoptive parents and siblings.)

If you allow access then feel your generosity is being abused you can simply change the password on the router to regain control.

You are trusting this person around your fine china and silverware so ...............

Sorry to be so dumb, but I'm just a nervous Nelly, I do want to be accommodating if it's pretty safe to do so. Am I the only one who can change the password? It can't be done by someone else from their computer?

I let my neighbor use my wifi guest account when hers was down and she said all she could not see my PC, just a black screen.

To answer your question about changing the password, no, only you can do that.

Anyone connected to a network with knowledge of the specific router's sign-on settings (username and password) can make changes.

Most people don't change the default settings routers ship with, and so most are easy to get into. Default settings for most makes are public knowledge.

If you don't believe me about people not changing settings, next time you're in a residential area, check what Wifi signals you see and count how many are named DLink, Linksys, or Belkin.

I don't have any mentioned. I have Verizon and the router/modem has no name. How could anyone change your password without using your computer? I've had family staying for a visit, everyone has an IPad, laptop, etc. They need wireless access to use their devices.

Even by using a smartphone.

Could we all be talking about different things? I was talking about signing on to the router and changing the network password. Which I thought OP was focused on because of mention of the WPA protocol.

If the OP was talking about the PC password, then of course not. And, of course, a node on a network has no access even to shared files on any PC that's turned off.
