For the things that don't go in the DW, you can also use a drying pad. I have one with ridges (a bit like the green one below, but squares) that rolls up and is stored under the sink, and a big woven one someone gave me in that drawer next to the sink that's great for parties when the DW can't hold it all and a lot of the tableware can't go in the DW anyway. For everyday stuff, like my knives and cast iron, I just dry as I rinse. :) Which is what is so useful about buying towels by the gross. :) I also have a little basket that's shaped like a small hamper but is really an open latticed laundry basket with a lid to put the wet towels in. So far they haven't gone stinky or weird in it. :) There are also a lot of very interesting looking drying racks if you're looking for something that's more visually appealing than Rubbermaid (though you can't beat the practical design of Rubbermaid!). Plus there are folding ones and collapsible silicone racks that are easy to stash away, ones that are meant to sit in your sink, or hang from the edges of your sink to hide while full, racks designed to go with all popular design styles, etc. Speaking of Rubbermaid, this first one is their "drainboard":

No one said that scent is not important - it is very important, and it is especially important that the scents we want to enjoy are not obliterated by scents that we do not want. I was unable to detect the scents in food that I liked because they were being masked by the scent of the hand soap. Scents can also warn us of danger as much as they can delight us. I remember being constantly nauseated by the barnyard smells when I was growing up, and I would not wear shoes in the house that I had worn in the barn - I had to have galoshes to protect my shoes whenever I would go there. I saw one show on TV about human development, and it said that brothers find the scent of their sisters repulsive (and vice versa) thus helping to prevent interbreeding. Therefore scents are very personal, and what one person finds attractive, another person will find repulsive. For this reason, it is important to respect boundaries with regard to scents and not invade someone's space with unwanted fragrances. For me, the hand soap was a very unwanted fragrance. There are as many repulsive smells as there are pleasant ones. Smells also trigger the most intense memories, and olfactory memories have been shown to be some of the strongest. I've noticed this when I smell freshly cut grass.

Chisue I think I agree with you. I often hear people wanting to know how to disinfect laundry. Personally I understand disinfecting kitchen towels and dish cloths but clothing na...unless the people are dealing with an expecially nasty bacteria or undergoing chemo I believe a normal wash in hot or very warm along with a detergent containing a nice mix of surfactants is enough to reduce **germs** to a safe level. Think about this....how many here concern themselves with disinfecting their kitchen even when no raw meat is involved than turn around and wash kitchen towels with cold to tap hot water ...unless the CORRECT chlorine bleach was used those towels are not disinfected and could after washing be home to raw meat bacterias. I'm not saying any of you do this butI know people that wipe the counter down with disinfectant after making a slice of toast than turn around and wash kitchen linens in cold water...that makes no sense to me. I use Method all purpose spray on my counters..its not a disinfectant. Just use common sense and you will know what needs disinfected and what doesn't.

I'll add my comment here even though it echoes what most of you say. I have a double sink. I envy my sister who has a DEEP and WIDE single sink. I don't mind doing dishes there at all. She also has a spray attachment and you can spray rinse the pots to your heart's content and no water ever splashes out. Pots and pans are a cinch to wash in there. In a previous apartment, in a really old building, I had a nice fairly shallow single sink but there was also a deep sink that was used in the old days for a scrub board so you could do laundry in it. It was so useful for washing everything.
