Problem with optical drives

My HP a1130n has two optical drives: a DVD/CD writer and a DVD/CD ROM. I used both on Thursday and Friday when using the recovery DVDs I had made to install the XP OS on a new hard drive that I installed. However, since that time I have installed all the MS updates and removed some "junk" programs that originally came installed on the computer. Now, when I want to install some programs from CDs, neither drive will work. In fact, they do not even show in My Computer. I checked Device Manager and both show there with a yellow mark. When I right click Properties the message is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The drives may be corrupted or missing." I went to the HP site and found a driver update for the writer and downloaded it, but when I click to install the message is "No device found". I don't know what happened to disable these devices after I had been using them.

If I do a system restore to the day I installed the OS, will that undo the MS updates installed since then? Everything is up to date, including SP3.
