Canon Pixma 500

You people are the best! I have been sailing alogn with no problems due to help of you all, until now.

I just got a new HP pc, windows 7. My CanonPixma 500 probably needs a new driver. When I upgraded a many years ago with my old pc, I went to the Canon site which told me what was needed and I downloaded with no problem and no cost. I can't seem to find anything like that now. Any suggestions?

Try using the HP help chat. Go to HP's site, put in the name and model number of your new pc, and click on the chat part. They may be able to direct you in securing the driver for your camera. If not, try Googling your camera model number with the word "drivers" in the search and see if you can find it there. It could be, that if it is an older model, there may be no driver for Windows 7.

I never connect my camera to my pc. Instead, I remove the media card and stick it into the card reader on my computer. I believe all HP's have the built-in card readers.

Canon Pixma 500 is a printer. I have one and its at least 6 yrs old. Can't help you, I still have XP and no problems...

Try Print Pal, I've used others and have been happy with cartridges. But I save the most by buying "bulk ink" and refilling cartridges two or three times before replacing. If you're doing only photo, you can do the self service at places like Walmart for under 30 cents each, don't remember the exact number. Your numbers about say 35 Cents just for ink with the Vivera set, maybe more with the Canon. To this you have to add the cost of the paper, what another 50 cents per picture? Of course you save on the gas if printing your own actually saves a trip. My Lexmark X8300 series AIO printer has smaller, lower cost cartridges than most other Lexmarks, I like that because the print head is in the cartridge and when it wears out (from refills) it cost less to get a new set of print heads.

The only negative to all-in-ones is if one of the functions you require fails the whole unit is not satisfactory. I recently went from a flatbed to an all-in one and have no regrets. Of course, mine was a package throw-in and free of charge so my feelings may be a little askew. Also, you might want to check and make sure any HP unit you are interested in comes with the Vista drivers. Mine was an HP Vista "ready", but I was suppose to download the Vista drivers; 177 MBs. On my antique DUN that would have required 9 hours, if the connection remained stable. The alternative was to purchase them from HP. I filed a complaint with the HP CEO and received the drivers for free. I did have to wait 10 days for them. DA

I have a Canon Powershot S2 IS and there is a problem with the batteries. This camera uses NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargables. This type of cell is notorious about self-discharging. Manufacturer's literature may state that these loose 10% of charge per month and a recharge life of 500 times. My experience has been worse. I find that after the first 2 to 3 charge cycles, the cells have lost capacity and the self discharge rate is more like 10% per week. As a result, I carry several sets of cells and charge these before I go out on a shoot. When on a trip, I carry a small charger in the camera bag and each night, I freshen the charge in at at least 2 set of cells for the next day. I find that regular NiMH cells deterioate too quicky for my use. I found a solution at Batteries Plus. They sell a hybrid NiMH that is superior to holding charge compared to the regular versions. This cell is not perfect, but the improvement is very good. These cells are pricey but I think the improvement is worth it. However, in your case, there may have been a problem with the battery indicator in your camera as well. I mention the NiMH problem because I think that may have been part of the problem as well.

Steph the higher the ISO the grainier the photos will look as that's adjusting the sensitivity to light of the camera's sensor, similar to using a higher speed film in a film camera. However it shouldn't be so noticeable at ISO 200. More normal would be some graininess at ISO 400 and over so perhaps your interior daylight isn't sufficiently bright. The yellow cast could be be from your white balance setting. Try changing that and experiment with different options. Try the tungsten setting, which you'd normally use for an indoor photo illuminated by incandescent lightbulbs. The camera will then reduce the yellow cast in your photo. Otherwise to get the correct natural colour try the custom white balance using white paper that I mentioned. Sharon

The Canon site shows that the MP driver for windows 7 is driver Version 1.11 10/20/2009 - the driver program is mp500win111ej.exe. If you have Windows 7 X64 the driver is mp500win64111ej.exe. There are also software updates with the same or later dates for the MP500. The price is "free."

Thank you everyone! I just was informed by Canon that my printer/scanner is not compatible with W7 64Bit.
What's another $200 at this point. :)

Oops! Sorry I did not realize that Canon Pixma is a printer, not a camera. I don't have any Canon products currently, so forgive my ignorance.

Pamies, sorry to hear that there is no driver available for your printer to make it compatible with Windows 7. "Planned obsolescence?"

Why would Canon still be offering drivers and software for the Win7 X64 on its website? One minute ago -- Canon is currently showing that the 500 is compatible with Win7 x64.

I saw there were several pixma printers perhaps knowing the full model number and type would help, it might be that the one they say is no longer supported is not the MP version.
However if it is the Pixma MP 500 there definitely does show a driver for it on the link fruitjarfla provided.

Yes, thank you, I went to Canon and the site "analyzed" my pc and said it wsn't compatible- just as my disk said when I tried to install the program again- BEFORE I read
fruitjarfla's email. This am. I went to that link and downloaded the driver and all was well. However my scanner didn't work- but I could do a custom install for the scanner components.

it's easy to install if you have a manual for your device... also you should try some of the canon toner for the printer...
