New Canon SD800 camera??

Does anyone here have this camera or have you heard anything about it? I'm looking for a camera that will take good indoor photos using natural light. My current Olympus C-770 doesn't seem to do that (I could have settings wrong though). When I take pics with no flash, even if my subject is right in front of a window, the pictures never turn out good. The coloring is horrible and the picture is blurry because it's not picking up enough light...which is so wierd because, again, I'm right in front of a window or open door.

I've seen some shots with the Canon SD500 but I believe it's discontinued and being replaced with the SD800. I'm just curious about this camera...or if anyone knows how I can make my Olympus work better.

I hope it's ok to post this here...or maybe I needed to post on the electronics forum??

Steph, I just saw in a Home Depot flyer that you can buy floruescent bulbs in different lights, like full spectrum, natural light, etc. I think that would be a good investment when you want to take pics of Grant inside.

YOur current camera...have you tried "portrait" mode? Also, check the white balance to see if it is set to daylight, incandescent, etc.

The pictures could be blurred by camera shake. Try using a little tripod with Portrait mode or manual. That way you can take a longer exposure without blur. Also try boosting the ISO to 200 or 400. Experiment with the one-touch white balance option on the Olympus by photographing a white piece of paper and setting that as your white level. (Explained in the camera manual.) You should be able to take lovely photos with natural light by adjusting the camera settings and using a tripod.

You are righ; Canon does not supply a manual with the PowerShot SX50 HS camera. Here'e what I did: I downloaded the manual from Canon's web site - all 285 pages in pdf format. I double sided printed the manual choosing the option that gave me a print zone of approximately 4 1/8 by 5 11/16 inches. Since double sided printing can get messed up, I broke the job into pieces printing a range of pages for example, printing 1 - 20 pages in the first batch, and then print 21 - 40 pages for the next batch, etc. Be careful to choose page ranges that ends with the the last page on the backside of the sheet (an even numbered page). Doing the job in sub-batches allows you to refill the sheet feeder when it gets low and to abort a batch in case of a foul up. The printout came out double sided on full sized pages and the front and back side print zones were perfectly aligned with each other. Next, I took the printout to my friendly Office Depot store to finish. They trimmed the sheets leaving a small border around the print zone and about 5/8 border on the left side for binding. I had my pages punched and bound with substantial plastic sprial material. This permits the book to be opened and folded back on itself. Office Depot added heavy translucent front and back covers. These covers protect the pages and keeps them from curling. I am very pleased with the results. The cost for the bindery was about $6. Office Depot could have bound the pages with adhesive like a paper back book, but I chose the spiral binding to allow the book to open flat and to turn back on itslef. It makes a nice field guide. The downloaded file can be printed to full letter size to make an office reference copy, however, I find that is not needed so long as I have the smaller camera bag copy.

Hi Ann My Wife has a Canon S2 IS....all I can say is, you get allot of camera for your money! I use a Rebel, but S2 always amazes me with the quality of photos it can take! The only drawback I find with these cameras, also Sony, I tried one out, 12 x zoom lens, but have returned it, just because the processing speed is a bit slow, perhaps with the new one it is better? As for batteries, we use Energizer rechargeable 2500 mA H, it takes about 3 hrs. to recharge and you can shoot about 200 to 300 pics on super fine setting. You should have at least two sets [of 4] , my Wife has 3 sets, so you will never run out of power. I find these batteries are more convenient, because it is available anywhere, much cheaper, about 1/3 of the price then my canon Rebel special battery. We heard, S3 IS will be released May 31. Also it has some new futures like sport shooting setting, which is good for moving objects and ISO up to 800 from 400. Here are some sample shots from couple of days ago. Konrad Macro

OK, I'll try an explain my thinking... 1.look at your environment and decide what you want to shoot. Since it just finished raining thought take some macro of water on various plants, used the ef-s 60 due to it lightweight for hand held close-ups. Next I look at lighting, low clouds but not too dark so I didn't need to use a flash, I can use settings to manipulate lighting. 2.Determine camera settings to archive the look you want. Take a few test shots at various white balance, shutter speeds, aperture, iso settings to get an idea how the end result will be. Used manual so I could adjust as light situations changed. Also change focus points depending on composition. 3.Take some photos Lighting is everything, watch how the shadows effect the look your after. Direction of light source, your position and so on. Doing this type of photography your able to take multiple shots at various angles to get the looks your after. The thing that I watch the most after camera settings is background objects and color. Find the subject, figure out your aperture/shutter speed, compose your shot, select focus point, check background. I don't want something behind the subject to draw your eye away from the focal point, aperture comes into play here. The bigger the f stop (smaller number) the more the bokeh( background out of focus) you achieve. iowagirl, I really don't know much about the DSLR cameras, so I guess I better do lots more research. I just mentioned to my sister than I was going to buy a new camera and I wanted another Canon. She has an Olympus and said she thought it took great pictures until she saw her 2 friends pictures. They were awesome, so she ask them what type of camera they had and both just said Canon 12 mp. I'll get her to ask them more about which camera it is. I'll also check out the others that you all have suggested. I just want to hurry up and get one! I hate to be without a camera. Of course my clothes dryer wouldn't work this morning, so I may be shopping for a dryer before the camera. :( Thanks to everyone!

I have the SD800 along with Nikon D70 & D200. This is a great little camera to carry along especially when I don't feel like carrying my Nikon. Of course there is still a big debate as to which camera is better SD700 or SD800? Here are a couple of pics.

Thanks everyone.

I tried changing the ISO to 200 and it did help in terms of the lighting. Typically what I see with the ISO on auto is that the pics appear very yellowish. The pic was normal color but it was very very grainy. With a flash, I dont get that grainyness. The camera is a good camera so I know it must be something in my settings. It's so frustrating.

I like the way the SD800 looks, thank you for posting the pics. Were these taken without a flash?

Steph the higher the ISO the grainier the photos will look as that's adjusting the sensitivity to light of the camera's sensor, similar to using a higher speed film in a film camera. However it shouldn't be so noticeable at ISO 200. More normal would be some graininess at ISO 400 and over so perhaps your interior daylight isn't sufficiently bright.

The yellow cast could be be from your white balance setting. Try changing that and experiment with different options. Try the tungsten setting, which you'd normally use for an indoor photo illuminated by incandescent lightbulbs. The camera will then reduce the yellow cast in your photo. Otherwise to get the correct natural colour try the custom white balance using white paper that I mentioned.

I agree with Sharon, Steph. Try turning the ISO back down to 100 or whatever, and the white balance to daylight, incandescent, or whatever looks best. The biggest problem I have with inside pics is that awful yellow cast, cause I never remember to adjust the white balance.
