Anyone tried a train rack in the tub/shower?

Hi,

We're in the process of remodeling our guest bathroom and I'm struggling to find a handy place for clean towels that's in close proximity to the tub-shower. Unfortunately, the only places to hang a rod or rack on the wall is around the other side of the wall separating the tub from the toilet (where the old rod was) or across the room on another wall.

I remember staying at a hotel with a standard 5' tub-shower like mine and they had hung a train/hotel rack on the wall opposite the shower head at the back of the tub. Somewhat surprisingly the towels didn't get wet when we showered - probably because the rack was hung fairly high. Anyway, it was SO convenient to grab a towel while I was still inside the shower so I'm thinking about doing this in my house. Has anyone else tried this in their home or had the same experience at a hotel? If so, I'd love your feedback.

absolutely, i would do this. my home was built in 1959, and the two tubs both have a towel rack inside the tub area. i found that the back of the tub, away from the showerhead, never really does get wet. and i've never understood the logic of putting the train rack above the toilet. i guess, to fill in the blank space there (artwork is better). but really, it's not a practical location from the sink or the tub...

just don't locate the rack too high up (mine is 69" from the tub foor). if you have a stationary shower (not the deatchable type) your towels should not get wet.

I've always had a standard towel bar on that wall - love being able to dry off before I open the shower door and let all the cold air in!

This is stained porcelain? Iron Out is a rust remover that seems to work well. Give it a regular cleaning. Then make a thick paste, apply, and let it sit overnight. The rust could either be from iron in the water that has puddled around the drain, sometimes it can be from under the drain where the fitting itself is rusting. If really required, you could pull the drain, but I recommend that only as a last resort, as if can case more problems than it can cure.

We are doing a bath with a tub/shower combo. Hopefully it will be mostly done by mid Feb. I'll try to post pics of it then. We are using: Tile: Octogon and dot (blue dot) tile on the floor. We'll use a checkerboard pattern of cobalt blue and white half-way up the walls of the entire bath, and solid white on the upper walls of the tub. Vanity: I think I will be using a white vanity for the bathroom. I needed something very sturdy, as this is the bathroom for my 3 sons who can be a bit rough with things.. Of all places, I got some ideas on the Daltile web-site. they don't have so many bath-shower combos, but (because they want you to buy as much tile as humanly possible) they use more tile, which translates well to a combo- style bath.

Thanks, both of you. bethcw, teak sounds great as far as practicality, but since everything else in the bathroom is going to be pastel/white, I'm afraid it would really stand out. (I should have mentioned the color scheme in my first post, sorry about that.) cat_mom, thanks for the picture. I don't think mine would get that wet while showering, but probably more than yours, since it would be over a standard 60" tub.

We hired a GC to remodel our kitchen, powder, laundry and two baths. His workers do the plumbing, electrical, drywall and tile work, he doesn't sub it out, so that is a cost savings. We talked about the vanity this morning and he said the tile on the side would go on thinset, not the full-on thick mortar like the floor or the wall (it doesn't have to "float"). My problem is we were originally going to put the 4" backsplash where the vanity and tub meet but now might have to do a full tile piece due to the overall tile design. The granite countertop has been cut already, not installed though, and I'm not convinced the tile could fit in the lip between the granite and side of the vanity. Plus, different stone tile sizes have different thicknesses, I will have to make sure it fits underneath. You're right, there are a lot of little things to think of.

I love the idea, as long as you don't need the headroom. I've definitely seen that work in hotel rooms too, especially when there was extra room past the edge of the tub in the enclosure.
