September Trip to the Atlantic Coast

We have our route pretty much worked out but nothing is ever cast in concrete with us. I heeded your input and tried to incorporate destinations that you posted about. Think though I haven't got the NH and Vermont stuff nailed well.

Here is our planned route......take a boo and let me know if there are some alterations I should make...especially that Vermont/ NH leg. Although the map shows some major hwys we intend to follow the smaller ones.

Also would still appreciate any details of places to stop along the way, both foodie and historical/geographical points of interest.

Click on the link

Then Click on "my trips"

Then select Oakville to Kingston

Then select "Use selected trip"

Then click on "Get Maps and Directions" at the bottom of the route list

Appreciate all input, it enriches the trip so much.

Here is a link that might be useful: Road Trip

Well Sunnyca we left for Francis(2004) and headed to Pensacola only to discover she was on her way there! So we decided to visit my BRO in Tennessee. The ride home was horrible.A standstill to a crawl. No gas and they would NOT let you use rest rooms as there was no electic(for pumps I guess)Street signs and street lights were gone so we really felt lost. When we got to out town the troopers stopped us and made us show ID then a helicopter followed us to our home to hover and shine light down.IT was very eeeeerie. We stayed for Jeanne which was way worse but we had spent so much $$$$$ on the first trip there was no choice. luna ,at least you have basements to hide in for a tornado we do not have basements in Florida. colored thumb I like the messy look also! Marlene ,I agree there are a lot of states that will be impacted by at least ONE of these storms

Here we go again! Historic winter storm for Mid Atlantic

Long day. Its finally stopped about 11PM. 12" here, and probably very close to that at National Airport. Still lots of wind and blowing and drifting, but the skies are now clear. Yesterday, up until about 4am it was a "warm storm" with temps around 32. Its been below 20F since about 8am here. The snow held and held and held on for longer than expected. This was definitely the storm of a lifetime, EVEN IF we had not had the 2 feet here last weekend, just the sheer conditions this storm produced, especially the whiteouts, and the near hurricane force winds along with 4-6 foot drifts, countless downed trees...etc. etc. etc. was a once in a lifetime event here in the Mid Atlantic. However, since we did have 2 feet on the ground already, it was just all the more historic. TZ7, Be safe! I hope you guys dont get it as bad as we did here, especially in terms of the winds. Many of our streets look like the photos you posted, and some were with downed traffic signals. Post more pics if you can! Suffice it to say, all of my palms, including the large trachy in the pot wrapped in plactic and xmas lights, are buried. The in ground palms were buried as of last saturday, and now they are under 3 feet. My smaller trachy unfortunately had spear pull, although that may be more attributed to the fact I left the xmas lights on it one day when we hit 49, and the palm cooked to well over 100F im sure. It somewhat dessicated after that, and has not looked good since. I think these storms just pushed it over the edge. Well see if I cant get it to come back. Ok Im going to bed. Ill post more photos tomorrow. Night all! Be safe.

What a lovely trip, Sharon! Here's some recommendations. NEWPORT: You can't get as far as Providence & NOT go to Newport. I'm certain there's some law against such a crime! :) lol Anyway, after your feet are hurting from touring the "cottages" I recommend lunch at The Red Parrot, right on the waterfront (Website: http://www.redparrotrestaurant.com/). Order dessert "to go". Drive to Brenton Point State Park on Ocean Boulevard to enjoy your dessert. It's right on the water at the entrance to Newport Harbor. If you're there on a weekend you can also enjoy the beautiful huge kites that clubs fly. It's one of my favorite parks. And for some unknown reason parking is not a problem. (website: http://www.riparks.com/brentonhistory.htm). PORTSMOUTH, NH I highly recommend The Dolphin Striker for dinner (Website: http://www.dolphinstriker.com/). The Striker is right on Portsmouth Harbor in a 1761 building. You can enjoy the downtown shops before dinner. If you want to spend a night near Portsmouth...then I recommend Wentworth By-The-Sea overlooking the Atlantic in New Castle. Wentworth is not a budget inn but it sure is a wonderful place to stay. We've spent a couple anniversary weekends at Wentworth (Website: http://www.wentworth.com/). It's hard for me to imagine being in NH & not also going to Exeter. If you have time, it's sure worth the time. This is NH's colonial capital & home of Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the premier prep-schools in the US. The campus is awesome as is the colonial town square. For eats in Exeter it MUST be Loaf & Laddle at 9 Water Street, Exeter, NH. Mustangs (Cathy) & I will, probably, differ on what to order but rest assured that anything you choose will be delicious. This is a lunch place. Right across the street from Loaf & Laddle is the Gilman Garrison House (Website: http://www.historicnewengland.org/historic-properties/homes/gilman-garrison-house/gilman-garrison-house). Definitely worth a tour. It's also an ancestral home from my mother's line. The wonderful steepled church on Exeter town square is where my DS & DDIL were married. My ancesters worshipped there in the 1600s. Next, I highly recommend you take Route 1 from Portsmouth, NH up the Maine coast. If you take I-95 you're going to miss so much of what makes New England...New England. WELLS, MAINE Billy's Chowder House has wonderful seafood stew. They are also known for their lobster stew. Billy's is located on a salt marsh in Wells, Maine. From northbound Route 1 in Wells...look on the right side of the road for a small sign (about 12"x12") that says, "Billy's Chowder House" with an arrow pointing right (east). That's the only sign. Turn right at the next light then be careful because almost immediately on your right side you'll see Billy's but it's the wrong place! It's Billy's Clam Shack. Keep driving & you'll come to Billy's Chowder House on the left right on the marsh (Website: http://www.billyschowderhouse.com/). I could go on all day about fun places in northern NE but guess I'd better stop with this. :) /tricia

Linda, there are other ways to lose your livelihood other than being a commercial fisherman should a storm take out several thousand recreational boats here in my town. Many ways. Just a few from the top of my head...marine mechanics, shipwrights, fiberglass specialists, electronics sales/installation/service, rigging specialists, canvas specialties (several types), upholstery specialists, stainless steel fabricators, crane owners & operators, marina owners, dockmasters, deck hands, fuel, pump-out service companies, painters, those who do the shrink-wrapping for winter storage, Tow Boat US franchise owners & their employees, places like West Marine & the marine salvage yard suffer from greatly reduced sales when the boats are not being used, restaurants & their employees (if boaters are not using their boats they aren't in town needing food), hotels, caterers (we have many very large yachts here all summer. They come up from the Caribbean to, hopefully, avoid hurricanes & utilize local caterers every week.), & retail in general. Boaters' purchases are the mainstay of our downtown area. Recreational boating is big business in the Great Lakes area also as it is all along the country's coasts (west, Gulf, & east). People earn their livelihoods in other ways besides farming. And those other livelihoods also ripple through the entire economy. Despite their farms the mid-west is suffering economically right now. So are Connecticut & Rhode Island. IMO, every job we have in America is important...not just farmers. My town lives or dies by the health of our local marine industries that includes oyster bed farmers, scallop divers, commercial fisherman (Stonington, our government jurisdiction, has the last commercial fishing fleet in CT.), sport fishing charter boats, & yes...recreational boaters and all those who support the marine industry that I noted above. The world's largest marine museum is located in Mystic for a reason. As I've said before, Mystic's life blood is the sea.

But phooey - What do you have against NY Metro area that you're so blatantly avoiding it? :(

If there is an area of the rip you are familiar with you can click on the "zoom" bar in the upper right quadrant and then move the map with your mouse. This will enlarge the area so you can see the details better.

Any and all suggestions for change/additions welcome.

Sharon, when you are going from York Beach, ME to Ogunquit are you cutting in to Rt 1 so you can get to Flo's? If you are than stick to the route you have mapped, otherwise take Shore Rd to Ogunquit and Make Flo's a side trip while you are in the area. Shore Rd is a BEAUTIFUL drive.

Actually, it might make more sense to backtrack to Shore Rd after your jaunt to Flo's and continue up that way. It isn;t far out of your way at all!

And if you are getting thirsty or hungry when you hit Kennebumkport, then stop by Federal Jacks - super food.

Thanks Alexa, we are taking route 1 but I did see that there was road closer to the ocean which I assume is Shore Rd? We will go into Flo's and then back out to Shore Rd. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the link to Federal Jacks too!

I don't knw what the heck they have so risque at Federal Jack's, but their site got blocked by the "sonic wall" so it's probably fun!

Have a great trip, Sharon. I loved Maine but was much further north and Route 1 was fin. Lots of antiques and roadside lobster shacks is what I remember!

Are you only going as far as Wellfleet on Cape Cod? I really recommend that you take the time to continue to Provincetown. It's one of my favorite drives. You feel like you are driving off the end of the continent, which in fact, you nearly are. The scenery is wonderful although the town is a bit touristy.

Alexa, it's probably the brewery part. We aren't allowed to see anything that has to do with beer/wine/alcohol here at work!

My sentiments exactly Dedtired!! It really would be a shame not to drive into Provincetown. Lots of little shops and art galleries, the port and whale watching ships are worth the visit. There's also an old fashioned drive-in movie in Wellfleet right on Route 6!!

No advice here but it looks and sounds like a great road trip Sharon. Check in when you can. Wonder if himself will have to get a new ride after this one, you know, all of those miles on the Bird after last years trip. Sounds good to me. : ) Y'all are having to much fun with this retirement thing!!

Pam and Saraandemmasmom, we are driving into Provincetown. Someone on a previous thread had recommended lobster rolls there as well as the whale watching but I couldn't figure out how to alter the map! We intend to spend a few days in the area.

Sharon, another suggestion here. What about spending a night on Peaks Island off the coast of Maine near Portland? I have day tripped out there and it is a wonderful spot.

I know you don't know me but I feel like I know most of you,I am a lurker.I live on the Cape and if you need help with any questions let me know.Do travel down 6A instead of the highway it is full of history with older homes and shops. The cape has a fantastic rail trail for biking and a nice stop is Nickerson State Park.P-Town(as we locals call it)has some neat shops and very unusual characters. And of course there is Christmas Tree shop in Hyannis next to Trader Joe's wher you just might see me working. In NH Polly's Pancke Parlor is a must stop for me in the fall.Right down the road is Harmon's cheese store= yumm. The Brick Sore in Bath is an old-fashion general store that has a smoker for meats and cheeses. In the White Mts there is The Flume and many trailheads with waterfalls and take a drive on the "Kanc" for some great photos. The breweries are a fun stop in maine with free tours and samples.Portland has tons of fantastic restaurants and bakeries and of course the farmers market if you are there on that day.Bath Iron Works is impressive.Freeport has LLBean,Wicked Whoopies,Simply Divine Brownies and Gritty McDuffs( where a visitor is made to feel like a local). If time allows visit Fort knox and the Penobscot Obsevatory in Prospect, you won't be sorry. In Rockport Farmers Fare is THE place for lunch. When in VT I never miss the Cabot Annex and Cold Hollow Cider right down the Street from Ben & Jerry's.Well I have said far too much lol enjoy your trip yell if you need me.
