I passed the test!

Today I have some GOOD NEWS to report. To my utter amazement and complete surprise, I PASSED the Pennsylvania Biology PRAXIS (teacher qualifying test) with flying colors!! Due to knowing some folks who had struggled with it, and not having studied very much due to two job interviews in July, I had zero expectations of passing, let alone doing well. I had signed up for it months in advance, so I took it because "nothing ventured, nothing gained." I was certain that I'd have to take it again, later, like next year. But instead I got my results today and I passed! That means I will not have to spend any more time and energy on that item of my "to do" list, and it means that I am one math test away from having my PA teacher certification, which will add another job skill to my repertoire. It also makes me feel pretty OK, that with a Masters degree in Biology Education, I can actually pass a biology test!! The alternative, flunking it, would have been rather a blow to my ego. Instead, I got some happy news which I could really use!

I do know biology, but the test was comprehensive and I have specialized in ecology, population biology and organismal biology. I don't know nothin' bout no humans!! (Well, I do know SOMETHING, but nothing compared to the course of study for a pre-med biology student.) I had to laugh when I told my biology teacher friend I had to guess on where the "Islets of Langerhans" were. I guessed they were in the testicles, as that was the only body part resembling an "island" that was on the multiple choice test! I should have known better! :)

Now I know they are in the pancreas, and it is their malfunctioning that causes diabetes. Pretty important information!

Now I can focus on taking the GRE again, which I did not do so well on the first time. I have to raise my analytical score. But that's for another day, right now I am teaching two college courses as an adjunct, so have to focus my energies there for a while.

Why do you have to take the GREs if you already have a Masters?

If the ERG valve is stuck and/or the ports clogged, remeding these maladies may solve the problem. However, after you clean everything up, check out the ERG for operation. If does not operate, it may have failed or there is a problem in the control feeds to the valve. Recirculating exhaust gas back into the intake mixture lowers the combustion temperature, hence reduces NOX. Sadly, it also reduces efficiency a bit.

Kateskouros, We do exchange e-mails occasionally. She moved away quite a long time ago. Next on the menu is matzah balls! Again for the freezer. Cj, the chicken fat is for the matzah balls. There are vegetarian recipes, but they're different. In kosher cooking, chicken fat is a traditional shortening for non-dairy (i.e., meat) meals. There's vegan margarine nowadays, but it doesn't always cook well. (I don't keep kosher most of the time (a long philosophical discussion there), but one is always "more kosher" for Passover.)

Good news, I passed the tests I took last month to get certified. Two more to go. It's a bit annoying that they won't give me an actual score (so I don't use it for any other purpose???), just "pass." The teacher in my wants a grade. ;o) Bad news, back to the vet today with Spider the cat. I have not missed one dose on his antibiotics or drops in his eyes. Yet I think his eye actually looks worse than it did 3 weeks ago when I first took him in, it is closed up and barely opens when I pull it open to put drops in. No doubt the teeth had to come out, but there must be more going on. I don't know what to do. I'm also curious if he has lost more weight today. He used to be a BIG cat, but he's so thin now. He's not meowing the last couple days either, when he tries it's scratchy. I think his throat is swollen. I want him to get better, but if that's just not going to happen I don't want him to suffer. And I have to be practical. Today will push it over $1000 on this issue, and I can't keep doing this, I have a family with expenses. I can't keep dropping money when the treatment isn't even helping.

at a 1.48 each.. its probably not worth the gas back to return them ... back in the day .. i learned more winging it.. like you did ... than i ever did from a book ... no WWW to chicken little me into action ... lol ... they are perennials ... there is no reason they should not come back ... its also hail storm season .. and if you read forums.. you will find many peeps moaning that mother nature did the same as you did ... it might not be a bad idea.. to isolate them somewhere ... treat them ... and plant in fall .. as a newb.. lets be clear... just about everywhere.. but maybe the PNW ... july/august is not a great time to be planting ... yes it can be done ... but dont be surprised if they struggle or fail .. it took me about 20 years in the garden to realize... just because i bought it.. doesnt mean its the right planting season ... and if you dont have 20 to 100 pots for fall planting.. you arent trying very hard... lol ... moving and planting perennials... is done in spring and fall .. for the EASIEST time ... as your experience grows ... you can wing it more... mostly because if you lose them. you shrug and say oh well ... live and learn ... try not to panic in the garden.. it kinda defeats the whole purpose of meditating in the garden .... ken

I'm working at being accepted into a doctoral program, but it has not been smooth sailing on that one. I keep telling myself I will get there someday, hopefully before I am 80! The need to earn a living keeps getting in the way!

Lpink, what great news! You're officially the smartest biologist I know:-) By the way, I would have guessed the Islets of Langerhans were in the kidneys!!! Definitely cause for celebration, you deserve it.

Yeah, I practically laughed out loud in the test, that's why I remembered the question! Let's see, Islets of Langerhans, aren't those off the coast of Norway . . . oh oh, the choices are pancreas, lungs, kidneys, testicles . . .

My dream in life is to discover something and have it named after me! Steven Colbert just got a spider named after him, Aptostichus stephencolberti! I actually would prefer to have an apparatus names after me, like a Berlese funnel, or a Secchi disk. Or better yet, a unit of measure, like a joule or a watt or Avagadro's number.
