Bull nose tiles too plain?

I see that most people have a decorative chair rail type tile to top of their tile walls. My toilet hole center is only 13 inches from the wall. It is kinda tight. I thought I would just use a flat bull nose tile to end my tile run which will be 4 feet up the wall. My thinking was that a chair rail tile sticks out some off the wall and it might make the space feel even tighter. But now I'm thinking a plain bull nose tile is, well, just that...plain.

Any thoughts?

There should be no problem either way, from a mechanical standpoint. As for aesthetics, that would be up to you and your taste, but I don't see the chair rail closing in the space. But then again, I'm not the one who'll be living there. :-)

no...it won't make the place look tighter...I'd paint a not too contrasting color with the tile to open the space

the other question is how is the drywall getting finished? you have a seam within 1 inch of the glass tile. I'm not a drywall finisher, but if I was I think I would have rather finished the drywall seam prior to tile install. we did something similar in the sense of having a glass strip and trying to figure out what best way to finish it. they did actually make a bullnose piece for my tile. We skipped that and did a 1/2 pencil edge in a marble something or other... basically we bought it at lowes, they came in 12" peices and were polished, not the unfilled travintine look. we were happy. price wasn't great, but it was a nice look, and actually with the pirce of the bullnose, not much more expensive.

I agree with the sentiment of not doing a "quick and dirty" installation in a new house. Call a tile guy and have him install them or remove the tile yourself and set them corectly. My 0.02

Home4all6- Thank you for the picture and the link! I remember seeing this keeping room, when it was in the magazine...especially this picture :) From Lavender Lass farmhouse pictures The yellow walls and the blue fabrics, look great with the wood furniture and those tile floors. That's almost the color of my brick fireplace. If they had some green plants and a bit of lavender, it would be perfect! LOL Did you notice though...how the kitchen looks a little colder than the keeping room. Love the tile (especially on the island) and the floors, but all that white is just too bright and new (IMHO) to go with the older/collected feel of the keeping room. I think antique (rather than shiny) brass would help...but some wood cabinets and maybe a warmer white would make a big difference. Thank you so much, again, for the pictures and it would be fun to be neighbors! (LOL) But, I don't think that would be enough land for my horses...they eat a lot and need a really big pasture. Mike- I'm glad you like the pictures! I really like that finish, too. It's not too glossy and does look more like a natural finish. My guess (and it's just that) is maybe they have a satin finish on them and aren't stained. A good finish should protect them...and again, guessing, but probably several coats, sanded in between. If you want to use these pictures, please feel free to post them and ask if anyone can give you more info. How goes your kitchen remodel and what did you decide to do with your hearth? Sorry, if I missed a post...but I've been wondering how you were doing. It's going to be such a great kitchen!

I don't understand why he can't go up to the ceiling (on the right) and then just continue the tiles out along the left side. see where I marked it in black in my earlier comment? I think what he's saying is that if he goes up a few more inches, the thickness won't be the same thickness as the border going vertical on the sides. But if he would have used bullnose edge on the shorter ends of the tile, he wouldn't have had to use that vertical looking border. you understand what I mean? I circled in black what I mean. the bullnose edge is on the shorter side of the tile. It looks like he used the bullnose on the longer side and turned it vertical. he should have just used the tiles like this. Now you can do your border w/the short end bullnose tile, and still go up to the ceiling and over to the left w/the longer bullnose tile, and everything would still match up. What may have happened is your tile doesn't have short end bullnose. maybe all they make are the end pieces. If that's the case, I would have preferred a Schluter metal edging strip. So, if you like it, then leave it. But what is going in the little space above the shower head?? As for the wainscot, they make a vinyl product that you can use. if you use a wood product, make sure it's properly primed (back too) , and painted w/special bathroom paint. Also be sure to have a good vent to remove any steam.

Hi Pup --

We used a traditional bullnose to end our wainscot. As it turns out, our space is actually most tight *behind* the toilet (we didn't want to move our stack if we didn't have too) so depending on your design and how a chair rail falls you might want to keep that spot in mind.

Thanks so much you all...and especially you, house vixen. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! I think the bull nose looks great and will be fine for me. Looks like you have 6x6? tile on a brick pattern? Then do you have a 3X6 subway and a 3X6 bull nose? It is hard for me to tell the size. I like what you did. My toilet and vanity are positioned like yours with a wall to the right of my vanity, as well. My tile will go up the wall 4 feet on all three sides. I am going to have 6X6 ice white tiles on a brick pattern and was gonna top them with a 2X6 bull nose. Your pics give me a little more hope that it will all work out. My toilet felt really quite close to the wall on the right side....I say felt cause bath has been ripped out for over four months. I just didn't want to feel like I was going to hit my shoulder or something when I stood up.

Glad the pics helped, Pup.

You're right, we have 6x6 running bond brick to ~ 36". Since our budget Dal didn't come in a 3x6 in the pale yellow, we asked our tile pro to split a bullnose 6x6 and run the 1" liner through it. So the flanking"subway" is ~ 2.5" (actual since takes the 1/16" grout lines into consideration). So we top out at ~ 43"...your 4' line will look great!

BTW, our wall is just a bit farther away from the toilet than yours will be and it does feel a smidge tight.

We decided against using a chair-rail pretty early on mainly due to the fact that our bathroom is incredibly narrow, and the shower is too. I wanted the pattern of the room tile to continue right into the shower and like you, didn't want any perceived 'narrowing' in the room or the shower.

This is also why DH and I are in discussion about towel storage in the room. He assumed we would have towel rods, I want just a couple hooks on the back of the door for shower towels in use and maybe a small towel rod on the back of the door for a small bath rug.

OH NO! House Vixen and Lauren 674, I like both your looks. But, I have ordered 2X6 bull nose pieces to top both my 6X6 vanity/toilet wall and my 3X6 subways that will be in the shower. Maybe I should have gotten the coordinating size bull nose to go with each tile? Ah geez, really can't go back now. Both my husband and my tile guy want to kill me as it is. And I'm beginning to want to kill myself!

Think it will look okay? I can definitely put a little decorative tile piece between the 6X6 and the 2X6 bullnose to break them up. I think I hate my bathroom remodel even more then I did my kitchen remodel!!!
