If this is true, great. But I'll believe it when I see it. It somehow seems wrong that XP/Vista users will be able to upgrade for the same price as Win7 users.

Perhaps not because if people decide to go forward and are happy with Win8 but not the performance on the Vista/XP machine then then may buy new. The $40 upgrade then becomes useless of course.

Anyone wondering about their computer and Win 8 can try the beta version for free. See here for downloading and tutorial on how to create an .iso DVD or USB drive. Be sure to read the FAQ page linked in the first paragraph.

I think I like my W8.1 desktop more then my W7 laptop! When I bought my desktop I asked that the upgrade to 8.1 be installed and login screen be eliminated. (I hate having to login when I start my computer!!) The only thing I still have a problem with is finding the controls on the right of the screen to shut down the computer......I really want the Start button back!!!! Besides that there are so many things to like about W8.1 and the convenience of having so many controls at the top of the folders. I have my "Desk Top" with my background choice and what icons I want. I must admit I'm still learning and finding new short cuts all the time. I'm a senior so I guess you can teach an "Old Dog" some new tricks :o)

I would get it right from MS rather than yahoo so you know you have just IE and not some added toolbars etc. You should be able to get IE8 right from your windows updates or you can get it here. If asked you want to be sure to uncheck any added toolbars and stuff like that. Here is a link that might be useful: IE8

Thanks for the ideas. I guess to add a little more info for clarity. This is a 36 unit apartment complex I am renovating. Paint quotes came in at $20k just to paint the brick, but we are holding off to use those funds for interior remodels.

Windows 10 Update: is it supposed to be slow upgrading my PC?

I just booted Windows to see if I had an update waiting. The only update I had was for Defender. My last "real" update included a .NET Framework update which required a reboot but I don't remember it being particularly slow. Personally, if it were me, I'd give it a reasonable amount of time (I don't know what reasonable is... an hour or two seems way more than reasonable) and if it was still unresponsive and sitting at the login screen, take it down (hold the power button in) and bring it back up. That's just what I'd do though. :) Edited to add: Try mikie_gw's advice first though. (I'm a slow poster)

Of course we all do understand, Microsoft makes much larger financial gains per consumer by selling this upgrade direct to the him/her at this price - Imagine its a win/win situation... excpt for the e/retailers who will have lost those huge initial release excitement sales.
