trying to re-intall printer problems

HP pavilion.64.vista.ff.

I have an HP 6310xi all in one printer/fax/copier/scanner. It's about 3 years old and has stopped working, the printer is not responding to signals from the computer. That is it will not print from computer instruction to "print page". I'm not sure when it quit working as I don't use the printer a lot.

The printer itself will make a copy but it will not scan. I googled the problem and worked and worked with it, checked the device driver, checked for updates and downloaded all kinds of suggested fixes that didn't work and wound up deciding to uninstall the printer and reinstalling it.

Now when I try to re-install it I can't get the installation cd to play. I checked the cd/dvd player and it works fine with anything else, music, pictures.

any suggestions will be appreciated.

You can download it from this page and then you won't need your cd.

bob414, that is one of the downloads I tried, I can get to the page that says to connect the usb cable to the computer but nothing happens when i connect the cable and the "next"button stays grey.

The other choice says that if you can't connect the usb cable "check here and you can connect the cables later", BUT when I check that box and hit next nothing happens, it goes back to the start page or disappears altogether.

I am assuming you are meaning "stuck" in electronic progress rather than the actual physical process. Are you printing from the Toolbar icon or from the File>Print? Does the printer appear in the Printers folder? If so, does it show ready? Is the printer assigned as default? If you are printing from the File>Print, when the print window appears is the Lexmark selected as the target printer? I have never used a Lexmark so I have to ask does it have a Toolbox, Troubleshooter or such where you can check connectivity? DA

Rita never fear about looking silly regarding computers. To be stupid would be to not ask a question you needed an answer to. Computers are very complex things and most folks are just happy to use them without worrying about the underlying hardware and software interactions. When you click File/Print.... those dots always indicate that there is another window before the actual procedure starts. In this case a window pops up with some choices, on my HP printer the 'Properties' button is near the top right corner. Click that and another window will appears where you can adjust the settings. Depending on choices available it might offer Draft, Normal, Best and Photo quality. Default would be normal so try using Best if that is offered. All this does is to slow the printer and the ink cartridges make more passes over the same part of your paper as it moves through the printer creating a better quality printout. Slower is definitely better than no printing. Hope that helps you.

Good suggestions have been given. Another thing to check is the device manager for conflicts and also check the contacts on the printer and the cartridges. A cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol will clean them. If there's a film on them and not making a good electrical contact, it'll cause problems and tell the printer there's no cartridge or a bad cartridge in there. Also you can try resetting the cartridge and put it back in. Make sure they're seated firmly, usually there will be a "snap" or a lever to close on them, but I'm guessing you probably checked that. Will it do a test print? What kind of printer? Check the cable connection to the printer, assuming it's connected by a cable. If it's a wireless connection that can open up another can of worms.

Thank you both for the feedback! Sujafr - are yours wood or the faux wood? I am in Florida and people say that wood can be a problem, but I posted a question on that here and seems many people in hot / humid climates have had them with no problem. I cannot visualize the whites / creams in here no matter how I try and given that my windows dont get hit with hard steady sun and are in my great room (not a bathroom or humid area) I think I am gonna go for it and get the stained wood. It is a rich and beautiful look that I love. If they warp I will just have to cry lol! I sure hope they dont! I am considering either the Normans (Normandy or Sussex line) or the Steves brand on that Stevesblindsandwallpaper site. The Steves brand is really affordable by comparison to others. The Normandy line of Normans - if ordered online - are a bit up from the Steves in price and the Sussex is the top priced - about a thousand more than the Steves. That is a big swing, but I have to consider that the shutters I choose will be up there for hopefully a long long long long long time! Color is probably gonna help me decide. I have ordered samples. The Levelor blinds have a great finish for our home. They are rustic and the right color. I wonder if real wood blinds are more or less likely to suffer than the real wood shutters? Seems more likely since shutters have more structure. Technicolor - I appreciate the feedback on your view also. That is good to hear. I am leaning toward outside mount altho it will entail removing my present trim and cutting back the sill a bit. THe only decorative issue I am having is that I have white baseboards and white crown and so if I put in stained shutters I am not sure how it will all pull together. I have seen photos of dark shutters with a small / medium white trim surrounding them but am not sure if they are inside or outside mount. I have some time to ponder that since the samples still have not arrived. Maybe someone will have some insight on that as well! Hope so!

I thought you had only tried from the cd. Did you look at the troubleshooting aids on that site? If you haven't, click on Windows Vista to see what they recommend you try.

Did you uninstall exactly as HP directs for your model printer? HP printers can be troublesome if their instructions are not precisely followed?

bob, I did all those troubleshooters, vista, hp, several forums, all the suggestions are basically the same as your first suggestion..but nothing worked

da,I did uninstall as hp instructions said. Yes I agree that HP printers are problems as evident by all the information on the web dealing with the same problem i'm having. In the past I finally figured out how to overcome the problems I ran into with this printer, but it looks likes this i'm not so lucky.

Check the USB cable on the printer to make sure that it's plugged in tightly and if that isn't helpful, try another USB port on the computer.

Making a copy does not require the computer so that is not much help really. Have you tried disconnecting the USB from the printer while it is on? There should be a 2 tone sound as this is done, plugging it back in the 2 tone sound is reversed. If there is no sound (assuming the speakers on of course) then either the cable is damaged or the printer might be shot.

The link below leads to a 90 second video on how to print the test page without using the computer, have you tried that? This will tell you if the printer is actually working indicating that perhaps the cord is damaged.

pk, thanks but I've uninstalled the printer. my problem now is I can't get the INSTALL software that came with the printer to read on the dvd/cd drive, and none of the online downloads were of any help...

owbist, I did as you suggested and ran a test page on the printer itself and it printed out fine. I also tried disconnecting the usb cable from the printer while it is on but there were no sounds. So that leaves me with either a bad cable or bad printer as you said. But I won't know til I get the printer reinstalled and that is my main problem right now.

That really sounds as if your cable may be shot, since you were able to print the test page. If unplugging and replugging the cable made no noise, this indicates a problem with the cable. Or how about the USB port you used? Have you tried a different one?

Yes I did try another port back when I still had the printer installed, but like I've said, my problem now is I can't get the printer reinstalled.

I've about decided to just purchase a new all in one printer, this HP printer has worked well except for the problems between it and the Vista program. And I don't like the expensive ink cartridges. I'll be researching and comparing printers and decide what to do.

This here is a real shot in the dark.

A while back I had a concern with my newer HP 5650 regularly falling off line. After much research and a couple of calls to HP Support it was determined that the cause was because I had the printer plugged in to the surge protector. HP's claim was that for their printers to work properly they need to be plugged directly into the wall.

Well, that fixed it. Don't ask why as I am not certain.

Thanks DA, I'll try that if I can figure out how to get this thing re-installed. I did have the same problem of loosing connection between printer and computer and that's what happened this time except in an effort to fix it I uninstalled everything I haven't been able to re-connect the two.
