It could very well be the simple solution is what's needed (detach USB connection). It could also be something else.

Your new printer should have come with all of the instructions needed to connect it to your network and to make settings in your network connected PCs so that print jobs are sent to it. The person best equipped to solve your problem, and who has the necessary information to do so, is YOU.

If pulling the USB plug doesn't solve the problem, I would revert back to the material you have and do the installation and set up again. Be careful to not omit any steps.

Failing that, I'm sure Brother offers tech support for initial connections. Do report back and let us know what solved the problem.

My hubby is not the geek, I am. He set it up, and it's never worked. After 8 months of not having the full functionality of the 4 in 1, I thought I'd try. The software is installed for the printer. On the Network page in Win8, it shows my laptop, the cpu, but not the printer. If I right clik on the printer( on the Printer page) it shows it's offline and not connected. The printer says it is not connected to the web. It seems to be stuck on "FAX". Due to bad lighting and the cpu and printer being in a cabinet, I can't see where to unplug the printer from cpu. The directions for the printer installation are not straightforward, they change pages. After the page change, I do not get the display that the instructions show I should have on the printer.
I was under the impression that the usb cable was not needed with a wi-fi connection. I do not get a wi-fi connection with the usb or without it. When it's light out, and I can see the black cable in a black cabinet bottom, I'll unplug the usb and uninstall the whole thing and start over. Which is what I should have done to start with. Thanks for your help. So nice of you to take time to try to help. Will post back when I'm successful. And I will be, I'm determined.

That cabinet could cause connection issues on wireless just so you're aware of that .

Thanks zep516, I really appreciate the help. Actually, I was aware of the problem that the position of the printer in the cabinet could be a problem. It is. When I was going thru the "set up wizard" it didn't even show our gateway, which is about a foot "above" the printer. I'm trying to come up with a solution that would enable me to set the printer on a level plane with the gateway so it will recognize the printer. I'm hoping I can do that without unplugging the printer at all. I also ran into a field asking for an input I don't understand. I guess it's time to use the "call the professionals on the phone" and get help. Thanks so much. Much appreciation from me to you. :)

you have to see that the printer is online not offline or you have a problem & you need to reinstall it :)

In order for the printer to work with WiFi, its radio has to be turned on. The default may have been "off" when first installed (that's the way it was with my HP printer). Look through the various setup screens on the printer for a "radio" or similar. If you find it, turn it on and see if that makes a difference.

For the first time it is used, you may need to load the identifier (key) of the router into the printer. This key is often on a label on the router.

If all else fails, read the manual. If you did not get a manual, its probably available on-line.

Being able to turn the radio on and off is handy because it uses a channel of the router (or gateway). If you are short of channels, releasing the printer channel might be helpful. As far as I know, it is not necessary to re-start the printer after changing the state of its radio. The only requirement is that a short period is needed when the radio is turned on for it to search and find the router and then establish the connection.

I think everything that needs to be done is already in this thread. I'll just summarize it for you I guess.

1.Make sure the wifi functionality of the printer is turned on. There should be a light that will indicate this. *usually a signal-ish logo"

2.Install the driver/software that came in with the printer. At somepoint of the installation it will promt you to search for devices. Make sure you pair up with the printer. It will take some time to pair up just let it do its thing.

3.Test print. After pairing it should promt you to test print.

4.If test print is successful then congratulations! if not refer to manual.

epcheal, did you already try the steps listed for the original poster? Those are basic steps for almost all wireless printers and computers.

If so and it's still not working, please start your own thread and provide your computer and printer models, Operating system, all pertinent information.
