Rita have you ever had this printer working? I ask because you said you got it second hand. Perhaps the ink has dried up in the jets and not allowing it to pass onto the paper. Were there cartridges in the printer when you got it?

A friend gave me 3 used printers, which I did not need, for helping fix her computer, none had cartridges in so I dumped all 3 without any attempt to use them. With printers so cheap these day it is a risk to spend big bucks on new ink for a doubtful printer that someone was not satisfied with.

It was dry when I got it. I filled them with ink from one of those universal ink kits. It did work for awhile.

Ah, good so you will not be out big bucks if it fails to work. try setting it to a higher setting, that works on my older Lexmark printer. Can you try cleaning the heads a couple of times to see if that clears it up for you?

not to sound really stupid, what do you mean by set it to a higher setting??

Rita never fear about looking silly regarding computers. To be stupid would be to not ask a question you needed an answer to. Computers are very complex things and most folks are just happy to use them without worrying about the underlying hardware and software interactions.

When you click File/Print.... those dots always indicate that there is another window before the actual procedure starts. In this case a window pops up with some choices, on my HP printer the 'Properties' button is near the top right corner. Click that and another window will appears where you can adjust the settings. Depending on choices available it might offer Draft, Normal, Best and Photo quality. Default would be normal so try using Best if that is offered. All this does is to slow the printer and the ink cartridges make more passes over the same part of your paper as it moves through the printer creating a better quality printout. Slower is definitely better than no printing. Hope that helps you.

I think your ink cartridge is no good, I've refilled these before and had software tell me the cartridge is empty, never could get them to work. A brand new one solved the problem.
Take a chance and go buy a new cartridge, generics are cheaper.
I have a HP DeskJet 842C that I bought new, still good, and have been given a DeskJet 882C and a DeskJet 895Cxi from people that tried to refill the ink and it leaked all over, what a mess, took them apart and cleaned them, now they're ok.
Of course, I hate as much as anybody to pay $35 a cartridge, but that is the name of the game when it comes to printers.

I'm thinking that maybe the case too. I know they have ink in them. It did work at first though, that is why I am a little baffled.

the hp carts are built quite flimsy on purpose. HP makes most of it's money selling the ink, not the printer, so they want the carts to fail instead of being indestructible and infinitely refillable. color lasers are much more forgiving when it comes to pages printed per cartridge. of course the carts cost many times more...
staples and others sell factory refilled carts at about 1/3 the cost of new, give them a try first.
