Cremation Urns for Pets

When Stetson died two years ago we had him cremated. It was our intention to bury his ashes after we moved. Something we still haven't done. We still have his ashes in the box in which they came back to us.

This week we met a local artisan who makes fine furniture and other objects including cremation urns for pets. He does beautiful work. I'm thinking now that rather than bury Stetson's ashes we might purchase an urn from Chickadee Woodworks.

I know many of us have lost a beloved pet and I thought I would share this website with you.

Ann T, that's a lovely thought.

The WonderWeiner got buried out under his favorite tree. Unfortunately, now I'm going to sell this house. When I move I'll take the flowers from his trave and that iron dachshund you gave me, I use it to make his grave.

Oh, KitchenDetective, I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I had to have my rottie girl euthanized in January after a long bout with cancer. I was devastated even though I had plenty of time to prepare.. and it's only very recently that my other dog has settled into the loss. I wanted to share my experiences because like you, my other dog is a lab and a rescue. I think those two things affect how a pet will respond-- labs are so incredibly social and sensitive to their "pack". My situation was compounded a bit by the fact that Beau, my lab, is very old and deaf. I had no idea how much Grace had assisted him in interacting with his world. They both always greeted me at the door-- but without Grace, Beau doesn't know when I arrive. He doesn't know when I call him for dinner or to go out. While in the old days he used to follow me around the house and be bonded to me, when I adopted Grace, they were much more bonded to each other. The good news is that now, 6 months later, he has become more focused and sensitive to my movements again and we are learning to work together despite the fact that he is deaf. Some of the things I did to help us both get past the grieving was to change some of our routines. Beau was my first dog and we were very well bonded but when Grace came into the picture the two of them were attached at the hip-- not that I was on the outside or unbonded but they definitely had thier own bond. I have spent a lot of time bonding with him again but in new ways (partially because he is now 16-17 yo). He won't go near where they used to sleep (they slept side by side) so I have taken that as a sign that he needed to change things up. I feed him at different times now and in a different spot.. our play is different.. and we walk, relax and bond differently and, of course, more frequently. I didnt share Grace's ashes with Beau-- it was clear to him that she was sick and he knew when she was gone. I don't know if it would have helped.. others in my life have been urging me to adopt another dog or a cat but I just don't have the heart for that right now. Beau is very old for a lab and I know my next loss will be even harder for me to handle. I question myself sometimes..because I DO think he'd do much better with another animal in the house. I don't know if that is an option for you, but it is something to consider. All I can say to you is to read your dog.. and to do what feels right for you, your family and him. My heartfelt hugs to you. I know this is a very hard time for you. I know nothing will make it better for you but I hope you find comfort in knowing there are others who understand your pain.

Sounds totally normal to me! By the way, my mom still has Rinnie's collar and dog tags. Rinnie was her dog as a child and Mom is in her mid-60's. One time I asked her what we were supposed to do with such things when she died. She said that she didn't care but she was keeping them until then, lol. When I got back to my Granny's house after my Granddaddy's funeral, I immediately changed into overalls- his daily wear when he could get away with it (complete with bare feet, lol) and went out to pick the okra he had planted in the front yard. When Granny arrived she was "slightly mortified" but I knew Granddaddy would have had a fit that "the boys (his sons)" had not picked the okra yet. I am not much on decorum, lol.

I hadn't noticed the date ... and thought, "Seems to me that I've heard that story before" ... I had the reply figured/remembered before it came. But still enjoyed it. When I think of how many times some people say that it's not a good idea to bring old stories back to life ... think of how many smiles (and slopped on computer screen) would have been missed today if this one hadn't been. Well actually, cremated remains are extremely high in pH and sodium, plus likely some heavy metals, too. So basically, they could be classified as toxic herbicides, lol. "burying ashes in concentrated amounts will have harmful effects on the environment. This is due to the fact that the pH level of the cremated ashes is extremely high and will not allow for the natural release of the good nutrients within the cremated ashes. Plant life is no different. These high pH and sodium levels are the two main reasons why burying ashes is toxic to plant life. They are nice.

I have to admit when my pets went to their final reward I either left their body with the vet or took it to the SPCA for mass cremation. I figured once they are gone, nobody's there.

Of course I understand that having them buried nearby or keeping their ashes is a wonderful way to remember a beloved pet and very helpful to the owner. I do believe there are some birds and turtles buried in my yard, pushing up daisies. The fish got a burial at sea.

Beautiful work Ann. We've been lucky because our dogs' ashes have all been returned in nice-quality wood containers. We've moved too frequently to bury dogs without having to leave them behind, so cremation has worked for us.

Oh Annie, I'm so glad I sent you that iron dashshund. Although I never thought at the time that it would end up being a headstone. Seems like it was meant to be.

Goldgirl, that is really nice that your dogs ashes have been returned to you in nice wood containers. Stetson's ashes came back in a little cardboard box that looks like a Chinese takeout container.

What I love about the Chickadee Woodwork's boxes is that they are designed by a local artist, specifically to be used as an Urn.

I know how you feel Ann, I miss WW so much, I still cry over him just thinking about it.

Some friends of ours bought a statue of a cat and hollowed out
the inside and put the ashes of their beloved cat inside.
Nick, now sits in the window sill at their house. they did the same for their dog Maggie, a German Shepperd.

We just buried our Sadie under a tree. I had a stone made that had a picture of a Cocker engraved along with the date of her birth and death. If we ever move, I will just move the stone since it truly is just a memorial and reminds us to remember her.
Ann, the website is wonderful. What a lovely idea.

Oh Ann, What a wonderful way for you to have Stetson with you forever. I know how much you miss him.

When Captain died we had just returned from a vacation. As I was leaving out the door, to get him from the vetÂs office that boarded him, I received the call. He just didn't wake up that morning. What a wonderful 17 1/2 years we had with him.

It truly is a wonderful idea to have a beautiful box to keep their ashes in.

Since this is a cooking forum with so many pet lovers, I'll tell my story from many years ago.

When DH was still a student we were living in a rental in Galveston (not near any family), when we lost our beloved cat. For some reason, cremation didn't occur to me and I didn't want to bury her there. So we sealed her up in plastic, then boxed her up nicely, and put her in our freezer until we were able to make the trip back to his Mom's house in Mississippi where we buried her with our other pets. She stayed in our freezer for about 3 months.

We now cremate all of our pets.

Thank you for sharing Ann. I wish I would've thought of that with Keegan; it all happened so quickly. I buried him at the home our family has had for generations, but then mom moved?! I have his marker, but it's not the same. If I had it to do over, that's what I would do. I appreciate the link.
