printing envelopes

I'm having an awful time with my Dell A920 3 way printer. Sheets of paper feed through with no problems whatsoever. But card envelopes---well, that is another subject. I've tried the half-fold and quater-fold envelopes and the printer starts up okay and the way it sounds it is printing perfectly. However, when the 'printing' stops, I get the 'paper jam' notice. I have to retrieve the envelope from the back of the printer because it doesn't even get to the front of it. There is nothing printed on it. Once in awhile there will be some ink smudges.

I have read through the directions on loading envelopes and I am doing exactly what they say to do. It's been acting up for so long, I don't even remember if it ever did work for cards.

The strange thing is, I can print out 3 5/8" x 6 1/2" and hardly ever have any trouble.

I downloaded the manual and read it. Basically, it says to be sure that the envelopes and paper are designed for use with inkjet printers. They should be loaded vertically against the right side paper support with the stamp area to the upper left corner and the paper guide is against the left side.

pk, I really appreciate your help and the time you took to look this up. I, too, have gone over the instruction book so many times I think I've worn some of the pages thin. LOL I am sure I loaded them right. But, I think, after reading the instructions again, and then you noticing it also,I can only think it must be the envelopes.
I also said I could print the other size envelope with no problem, but, just to be sure, I just tried printing one of them, nope, they won't work either and they are a new box of envelopes. The old box worked very well. Apparently these are too thick to go through.
The instructions tell what thickness to get but I don't know how you would know which ones to buy. These do not say how thick the paper is, just the size of the envelope. But, again, I thank you so much. I was ready to throw the printer in the garbage. Guess if I try another box of envelopes would be a little cheaper. BT

I'm so itching and twitching to respond to this post on you RR thread Diana, but, I'm being a good girl since I haven't traded with the person "Doing my best to do things right. Sorry that I have mailed some seeds not in a bubble envelope due to not having one available and wanting to get seed out at once so I would not get behind. Most seeds sent were flat so thought it would have been ok and when printed on envelope to "Hand stamp" what more can you do? Have learned my lesson, and with some people, learned that you just can't please them no matter what you do. Like I said, lesson learned." BUT. this is just bull crap. Flat seeds should be fine, my arse and marked hand stamp? Who is this character kidding. I got one of those envies several years ago, flat seeds, marked hand stamp. Whoopy. the seeds where flat to start with, that is true, money plant seeds are flat, but those crushers in the PO, don't care that the seeds are flat, fat, round or anything else. When they are done with the envie, there is pulverized dust left, even with the flat money seeds. Every seen what those crushers can do to marigold seeds? Yup, dust with them too. What more can you do? How about a bubble envelope and do things right. forget about getting them out fast. Just a stupid, stupid answer and nasty to boot. No thanks, that one isn't gonna be on my trade or BEAP list. Seeds go out in bubblies only, trade or BEAP and they come in with a Bubblie or bad review is posted. This is an interesting thread as printers are like razors. The base unit doesn't cost much, but you get raked over the coals to buy replacement cartridges. I've got a couple of people here that swear by HP inkjets both from a standpoint of quality and ink consumption, so I found it highly enlightening that they now seem to have come down in quality. I have had nothing but Canon at home, currently a 4 in 1 that we love, but Canon's also don't last forever, even when using only OEM cartridges, and the cartridges seem to run out quickly, and they cost a fortune. I had told myself to buy HP the next time the printer craps out, but now I'm not so sure. I hope you have a good experience with the Brother. I'm always looking for viable alternatives in this space.

It may look like it printing blank. Test with a full sheet of paper. Your putting the envelopes in one side and it printing in the middle. You've got to set it for printing an envelope. To set it for envelope printing use the place were you are typing the address. I have Microsoft Works Word Processor. What do you have? Once I get an envelope address the way I want it, I name it 5 x 7 The address doesn't matter, it can be highlighted and deleted and type in a new address and click SAVE AS giving it a different name. In other words I go to my Documents and open the size envelope I want. In my case I would go to TOOLS = Evelopes - single envelope - OK = Pick the size of the envelope. New Document - OK At the Left top - Page Setup - Envelope Feed - Select the side Feed - OK Because of the long setup is the reason I save a copy to My Documents.

It's been a long time since I've printed envelopes using the program itself. Usually I use a template and go that route. I did find the following link and noticed it said "Skipping steps 6 through 12 will cause you no end of problems." Hope it's of some help to you. Here's another link but it's for an older version. Maybe it'll be similar? This search has a youtube demo too, but I didn't watch it. The problem is compounded with different printers, different envelopes and the like . The printer needs to know where and how to expect the envelope and whether it'll be face up or face down, etc. I used to use some scrap paper to test it to make sure it didn't print on the back of the envelope, upside down or something. I looked for the dell A920 + envelope problem -- got 5,320 Google responses of varying sorts. Many had problems with junk stuck inside and some shook it, banged it, vacuumed it, etc., and loosened various items. Others say that it involved feeder rollers; one on the right side pulls it but one on left doesn't, causing the paper/envelope to run sideways resulting in a jam. If it will print other sized envelopes correctly don't let on that you are using the ones it doesn't like, but just make sure you get all of the printing in the area required. Have you tried printing on the problem envelope but not identifying it as an envelope -- feeding the envelope backed by a sheet of paper? That would require added work to get the printing on a certain part of a "page" that would result in the printing in the proper place on the envelope. Also check for dirt/fuzz on the rollers if you can see them.

Hi fruitjarfla. Thanks for your help. Now I am really stumped. Yesterday I thought I would try the printer again. WELL!!! it printed part of what I wanted but it was not centered where it was supposed to be.....was way over to the right and the part of the wording was off the edge of the envelope. Which made me think the settings were off somewhere
Then I tried again, and again, and again, then it jammed with nothing printed on them.
I have gone over and over to make sure the settings are right and I can't find anywhere that is set wrong.
I suppose I could shake the dickens out of it again. Nothing fell out of it yesterday when I tried that. ho hum.
As far as the thickness of the paper, it isn't as thick as the card papers and they go through with no problems so I'm totally out of ideas.
Well, thanks again for all the help everyone is giving me. I appreciate you taking the time to help me figure out this dilemma. BT
