The lovely and talented Deanna!

Deanna and I spent the morning picking blackberries for jam and making a double batch of Annie's salsa. When I got there this morning, I was surprised with a bag full of goodies. If there was ever any doubt about what a sweet person she is (however unlikely that may be) the contents of that bag proves she's one of the best.

A couple months ago, Deanna asked me what the color scheme for my kitchen was. She wouldn't tell me what for, just wanted to know what colors I liked. Trickster! Today's gift bag is the result of her scheming and I couldn't be happier!

She put together pot holders, wash clothes, cloth napkins (she was paying attention!), dish towel and a lovely quilted wall hanging for my kitchen.

Thanks Deanna!!!

What an absolutely wonderful thing to do! What a lucky person you are, Bri. Deanna, you are a super friend.
As a newly started quilter, I love the pieced wall hanging.

How very nice that you could pick and can together. And what a thoughtful gift.

*Sherry, I didn't know you were quilting. I quilted for a short time but it led to covert activity and I had to quit.

How perfect!! LOL, I'm with the others in imagining Moe being a littttle worried about that branding iron. I've always thought they were cool. The bbq set is really nice. I love how they now do the spatula with the nice cutting edges. Great idea. The tongs have nice grips on them too. I really like the skewers too. Ann, you like the stop towards the handle but I like how they twist at the other end to help things from sliding off in that direction. What timely thoughtful gifts. For sure ones you'll get tons of use from. Great choices Deanna!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! Sorry it's taken so long to post. My mom (and best buddy) came down on Friday. We visited a U-pick flower place, farm stand, lunch a the Fisherman's market, etc. Just a fun "girls" day. Saturday we lounged around in the sun (yes, we ENJOY it here, there's been darned little of it this year) all morning. We went and painted pottery in the afternoon and did a little shopping. Sunday after church, we went to a BBQ & pool party at my son-in-law's mom's house. Two birthdays on either side of mine in the their house and it's fun to see "the kids" at the same time. Mom headed home in the evening. It was a wonderful weekend. We had our FIRST 90 degree day on Saturday. While most of the nation is trapped in the heat wave, we've been extraordinarily cool. Yesterday's high: 75, this morning's low: 48. Feels like fall already and we haven't had summer. I'm still eating snow peas for pete's sake! On the bad news side, we got a phone call at 2am Monday from my SIL to tell us that MIL was taken to the hospital. MIL is 85 and suffered a head injury from a fall about 1 1/2 years ago. She's been in a nursing home since. They have now diagnosed a (likely) cancerous, large tumor in her cervix, uterus. The options are somewhat limited due to the location, size and her age. We're still waiting for the biopsy reports, but the technician is saying Stage 3 cervical cancer. Still lots of unknowns about how we proceed from here, but I probably won't be around much for a bit. Any prayers are appreciated, but no need to keep this thread alive on an off-topic issue. Deanna

After picking the 9 lbs of figs, we cleaned and chopped the suckers, then loaded them into the pot with sugar and split vanilla beans. Here's the pot with contents After the vanilla beans start getting soft, Jessica fished them out and we and threw everything back into the pot. Then we stirred and stirred and stirred. It started getting somewhat hot in there, LOL. Until the temp rose, the liquid evaporated, the stuff started to sputter, and well, Meanwhile, Jessica's family was starving and had to be fed, so she ran out and threw a whole marinated chicken on the barbie. Unfortunately, we forgot about it until We had a big laugh. Fortunately it was just burned on the outside and still tasted great. We did have other things to eat too. But I don't know After eating, all the males beat a hasty retreat out of the kitchen lest we gals ask for more help. So Jessica and I treated ourselves to a bowl of on the patio. By then, was ready to go home. So I packed up my , including flowers from the garden picked for me by Jessica's sweet DH. And I went home with multiple jars of my favorite jam ever. Thank you for everything Jessica!

America's Got Talent - Finals

I just watched the finals and have not yet seen the results, but I gather from the discussion that Grace won. Good for her, but I would rather have seen the Clairvoyants win. Grace's songs were poignant and relevant to today's youth, much like the songs from the late 1950s, except those were written by adults. She is like Taylor Swift in that regard. Her voice is different, but she can carry the tunes, so she'll be fine. Laura Breton screwed herself in singing one of the most tragic songs ever written with a huge joyous smile and lolapalooza last note. When sung properly, even this song in Italian should leave non Italian speakers (and sometimes the performer) in tears. If you're not familiar with O Mio Babbino Caro, the singer is telling her father that she's going away to find her lover and if she cannot marry him, she's going to jump in the river and kill herself. The last lines are "father have pity on me" sung twice and NEVER with enthusiasm. This is not to disparage her vocal talent. She'll get plenty of work, but this performance definitely changed the way I saw her. If she knew what she was singing about, she would have done it differently. If you want to see it sung like it's supposed to, check out Sissel on YouTube. Victor Kee is a less skilled version of Michael Moschen from the 1990s. Check out what Moschen can do with his crystal balls and bouncing balls in the triangle on YouTube. Sal Valentinetti absolutely killed it in the finale. He won't have to deliver pizza for long. I can't listen to that genre of music for long but he killed it. Linkin' Bridge did the same. They're the first good thing to come out of Chicago since forever. Sofie Dossi is cute and flexible but all she does is handstands and neck hangs. Her cleverest trick was shooting an arrow with her feet. That's slick, but I think I see why there's no National League of Professional Handstanders. The Clairvoyants do a mentalist act. It's a version of magic with secrets all their own. They do it VERY well and are so charismatic.

Oh, I love that wall hanging. I've never even tried quilting, I know I'm too impatient. Teresa sent me a beautiful wall hanging in autumn colors, it's one of my favorite things.

Of course, I never doubted that Deanna was lovely and talented, she hangs around here, LOL.

Isn't it fun to get together to pick berries and can and generally hang around? Lpinkmountain and I picked blueberries together the first time we met. No where but here....

OK, so where are pictures of the canned goods?

I knew there wouldn't be any doubt about how lovely and talented Deanna is, but I wanted to make sure everyone knew!

Annie- Deanna has the pictures of our morning's efforts on her camera. Since she has a slow internet connection at home, I think she'll post them tomorrow from work. Until then!

Yeah, but Bri forgot to mention that this was in congratulations for obtaining her Master's Degree...in Engineering, no less!

We lots of fun and plenty of sweating! It was pushing 90 degrees by 2pm when we finished!!! No air conditioning, just a box fan to keep us going!

We picked wild blackberries near my house and made a batch of sugar free jam and a batch of regular:

Then we made a double batch of Annie's salsa!

Thank goodness! We were both on our last jar! Canning tomatoes aren't really ready here yet, but I got lucky and scored 10# at the Farmer's market by whining to a vendor right at closing time and she showed me a box of "less than perfect" toms she had stashed behind her table! Wahoo!

Be sure to check the "You're Invited" thread posted by Annie for another pic!
