Collapsed sub-floor basement shower, need advice, please

I have a small bathroom in the basement apartment in my house. Over the years, various students used the basement while caring for my daughter. Now that my daughter has gone off to university, I no longer have anyone living there. During my recent kitchen reno, I used the basement as my temporary kitchen. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that the bathroom floor had collapsed between the toilet and the shower. No one had mentioned any leaks or problems. When I asked the last student, she said she just filled in the hole with towels!

I think I may have to remove the whole floor to find where the leak is coming from. Should I remove the toilet and the shower, too, and then replace everything, to be on the safe side? Any advice welcome. Thanks,
