Looking to replace 4 yr old desktop, Gateway

Hi,

I am looking to replace my 4 year old computer. Unforutnately, I ahve not been in touch with the computer world, witha ll the new features etc out there.

I am leaning towards Dell; but in essence, I dont need stuff related to watching movies, downloading movies, storing photos, etc.... I just need something that is somewhat basic, but is powerful, very good with internet access and browsing, can be used for some basic homeowner and business office functions. I would say in the range of $750-$1k is good; that will be a good techological product that will be compatible for another 3 years or so.

Now, I dont need a monitor, I can use my existing 22" flat screen; so just looking for a box.

Can you please guide me on the basic features, which I would definitely want to consider; ram, disk drives, process speed, etc and even possibly soem things you might thing are worth considering.

You can find computers that do what you wish for less than the amount you have indicated. For a faster computer be sure you choose a dual core processor; either AMD or Intel have those, and most new computers come with such. I'd also recommend at least 4GB of RAM, although more won't hurt. If you are not into gaming or photo editing, an on-board video card is just fine. You can probably find what you want for $500 or less, if you watch for sales. Search the websites of Dell, HP, Gateway, and others to see what is available, and then look at ads at the big box stores, including Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Max, Best Buy?, etc. You should be able to find one that meets your needs and then some.

Why are you needing a new computer after 4 years? Just because you want a newer operating system, or is the one you have no longer capable of doing what you want? I ask, because even though I have a newer Windows 7 laptop, I'm still using my 5+ year old XP desktop for most of my work, including online banking and investing, photo work, e-mailing, browsing, etc.----all the things you say you do with the exception of business office functions, but with the right program, it is fully capable of doing that, too.

Ok great thanks grandms.

The reason why, I guess, a new toy, and also, I am finding my existing computer slowing down a bit; I do use it quite a bit, remotely logging into my office and really cant afford to be without a home computer so its also a preventive maintenance type of thing with a 4 year old machine and possibly "crapping" out at an inopportune time.

I found this thread not only interesting, but it was also the kick in the pants that got me to do something about the repeatedly failing water intake valve/solenoid on my Miele Optima (G2420-SCI). The unit was installed new in 2008-2009. We moved into the house in early 2013, and by August that year we experienced our first failure. I do not know if the valve failed in the interval between 2009-2013. I called the local factory authorized installer, and they came out promptly. As I learned after the 2nd failure, they didn’t replace the entire hose/wire/valve, but simply cracked the case and wired-in a new valve. They charged me price of entire unit. Eighteen months later, same problem. I found some info on retrofitting the Miele valve with a GE valve, but I guess I was too timid to try it then. So, I called Miele and explained the problem. They comp’d me 33% on the new part, and this time they changed out the entire assembly. It worked fine until July ’16 when it developed same problem. This time they comp’d me the entire part and did another replacement. Every time they checked the inlet water temp it was below 130 degrees. The new part installed in August ’16 has barely lasted 8 months! We tried to use the machine over Easter weekend, and it came up with the same humming sounds of no water coming in and then popping off the “F12” fault code. After embarrassingly spending/wasting $1000 on 3 valve replacements, I finally decided to look back into the GE valve, and that’s how I got here. I was a GardenWeb member for years before Houzz, but lost touch, until I found this thread. Good x2. I followed the instructions on the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LaqSO-Oyuw I opted to use the GE WD15X10003 valve as per the video, and not the WD15X93, mentioned earlier in this thread. As far as I could tell online, the two units are functionally comparable. The bracket and molded switch housing of the X93 are somewhat different, necessitated by the fact that the X93 is designed to be tucked into a cramped under-washer position in a GE system. It is also about $10 cheaper than the X10003, but the X10003 was available by Prime on Amazon, so I could fix it right away. I would guess that any of a number of these valves would be fine, since they would sit on the floor of the under-sink cabinet, and not require specific in-machine installation. The water inlet connection on the GE valve is a 3/8” Female iron pipe thread (FIP). My water source connector is a S/S flex hose with a 3/8” female compression fitting. To mate them I needed to pick up a 3/8” male-male brass connector with one end MIP and the other a compression thread. Connecting them was no problem, but getting them leak-free at the MIP-FIP connection was a bit of an issue. One has to hold the valve in one hand while tightening with the other and it’s hard to get a good grip on the valve portion. I used plumber’s tape first, but on the second try I used 1 wrap of plumber’s tape and a thread filler-sealer called “Hercules Block.” It’s a somewhat messy blue paste, but it did the trick. The wire connections were straightforward, just as explained in the video. I test ran it twice yesterday, and it worked normally, just as the OEM valve, and so far, there are no leaks. The time between failure and repair was only 3 days (not the typical Miele 3 weeks), and the out-of-pocket costs for valve, connector, sealer, electrical connectors was $40. (not $450+). The satisfaction of DIY, and un-shackling from the burdensome, confiscatory Miele system?....priceless. My only regret is that I should have done this after the 2nd failure...or the 3rd...slow learner, I guess.

I guess I thought the poster's climate was warmer. If they only get say 5-6 days of weather in the low 20's that might be worth getting by on just heatpump with electric strip backup. If they already have natural gas then maybe they should spend the extra money to have an 80% furnace. I really like the idea of the heatpump for their climate because there climate sounds like the winters are not too terrible and the heatpump could handle that well. Ofcourse natural gas furnace with a heatpump is always better. That is what I have. I really like the heatpump heat for the milder cold weather (35 and above).

garyg, It is an either or situation XL14i with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ $9105 includes 2 -5K heat strips. or hybrid below 2 XL14i condensor with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $8208. XR13 with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ 7150 includes 2 5K heat strips. or XR13 condesory with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $6985. Gas rates are somewhat confusing for two reasong 1. They under reported July and caught in August. 2. we have distrubtion rate, gas supply rate,weather normalization adj rate, base rate adj and EE cost rate. All of which is different.

For $4000 he thinks you "might" have a solution? Wow. Did the guy do a heat/loss analysis? He wants to give you the same size furnace. What is the continuous flow option? Is that a variable speed blower? I think a VS blower run all the time will help to even out temps, but what i cannot get is that an 80k system is having a hard time heating 1200ft of space. My whole house is heated with a 100k system and its 1800ft. I never have more than a 3 degree temp diff btw floors if at all. I did however focus on insulation and draft blocking (real cheap to do) to get that. Heat wise is there something special about that bedroom that it wont heat? Ductwork issues: loose boot at register or going thru uninsulated walls? What does the room look like. Are there dropped ceilings is it under an attic space etc. Are the walls insulated or does it have a million windows. So many questions and probably cheaper to find solutions to your problem than dishing out 4k.

slowing down is something that can possibly be remedied many things can cause slowdown the most common is malware doing thorough scans with updated malwarebytes free and superantispyware free will help there, the guides in this article are a good list to go through, and if you have not recently opened that tower case then definitely it needs to be opened and cleaned out well, the dust buildup can be very hard on them.

several of mine are well over 5 yrs old and working like a charm.

If you just want a new pc go for either a dual core or quad core, I personally prefer AMD processors, do not go with any celeron processors, I like HP, Acer, cyberpower ,not so much Dell.
Look online at walmart.com they have some very nice options for good prices and I like that if something goes wrong you can return it to any walmart store. Sams and Costco also have decent prices. I am certain you will want windows 7 64bit usually most will have home premium on them.
No less than 2 GB Ram 4 is more desirable, hard drive would usually be 500GB or larger on most, depends on how much you need to store.

Just remember, you will be losing outlook express and enter the new world of windows live mail.
New can be good.
I just purchased a card reader because the new computers do not have the media slot for my old camera which I love, so got a USB reader and did not even have to slip in the installation CD.
It worked as soon as I plugged in.

You say your computer is slow. Have you emptied the cookies file, empty the temp internet files, recycle bin, and done a defrag. Those things may speed it up. What is the processor speed, size of hard drive, and operating system? Those issues should be considered before buying new.

If you are set on a new "toy" and you are open to a laptop, Staples is having a sale this week. I noticed some well under $400. I'm pretty sure they had AMD Athlon processors. Not sure about the amt of memory, but I think I remember that I saw one with 3G. They possibly have desktops also, I saw the ad online.

Thanks all for your input. Decide on Gateway, DX model. I have good luck with the 2 prior computers, might as well stick with it.

For $400-500, one can get a decent machine for using ordinary things.

No doubt about it, prices of computers have really come down and even in this price range offer so much more for the money than those costing more even a few years ago. Good luck with your new machine.
