Question about broadband connection

I just ordered a new computer and will move this one to another room. I have comcast broadband that is connected with a cable modem and have a router for another computer.

This computer does not have a wireless connection and I am wondering if this is something I can add on.

It would be nice to be able to have internet access through the router with this computer once it's moved.

I do have some empty slots but don't know if this is an 'add on' product.

Anyone know?

Yes, you can add a pci nic or a usb nic. You didn't say if your router has wireless connection. If not you will need one.

Yes the router has a wireless connection.

It's possible to set up a Windows95 PC on broadband, but I'm not sure how wise it would be. I don't think MS has provided patches for it in quite some time. The modem that is in it does not affect broadband speed because you won't be using that to connect. You'll use DSL, cable, etc and connect using a network cable (so you'll need a network card in the PC).

Murphy, if you are no longer in a contract with Wild Blue, you can do as I did and buy a special 3G router so that you can use both computers with your Virgin 3G service. My XP desktop does not have a wireless adapter, so I connect to the router via Ethernet. The router sends a wireless signal which goes pretty much throughout my house, and I connect my laptop, which is on a different floor, wirelessly. The 3G modem plugs into the router. Well the installers left a bit ago. They measured the signal off of the new tower that they had thought would work. Because of trees in my front yard woods (and possibly other trees beyond that), it would require setting a 50 ft pole,(next to the house, or else have the drop in the air, as they don't bury service) with a 20 ft pipe on the top of that, and a cost of a little over $500. Well, it just isn't going to happen anytime soon...due to having the pole beside the house, and the cost. There is a possibility that if enough of us in the area still cannot get service, then the company will do whatever it takes to provide service....but we're probably talking years on down the road. Another possibility, is that the electric cooperative, is experimenting with providing service to us in the boonies. That too looks like it is a ways down the road though. Our electrician insisted on a wiring box attached at the end. The problem is that its height is 1 1/2" and the lightrail is only 1 1/4". We tried but there does not appear to be an alternative. Sucks. All connections need to be made in a box according to code. There are no small enough boxes available. Electrician says connections would not fit anyway...

if you are wanting to make the computer wireless and it does not have wireless capability built into it then you would need to add that to the pc. They come in easy to plug in usb form or ones that get installed into a slot inside the pc which is also pretty easy. Since you do have a wireless capable router that should take care of it.

I have seen them at Sams and costco for pretty good prices also.

Another question...how do I know which or what kind of usb plug in to buy? I see there are different kinds. I read that a 802.11B will most likely work on almost all computers, but the the "A" or "B" ones might not cause the computer would not support it.
My wireless router is a linksys wireless G model.

I assume this is the statement that is causing the questions
2) 802.11g / 802.11a adapters must be USB 2.0. Not every PC / notebook has USB 2.0. USB 1.1 is not fast enough for 802.11g / 802.11a.

USB 1.1 is the standard that all usb ports can use it is the older standard however and is much slower, newer computers for the past 4 yrs or so have all come out with the USB 2.0 standard which is a much faster version, most things made for usb ports will be backward compatible and can be also used on usb 1.1. So depending on the age of the pc you likely do have USB 2.0 standard usb ports.
You can run a belarc on your pc and it will tell you everything about it.
