Hosta Island redesigned
Comments (14)Donna, the fish-eye effect is great. As far as I know, that is the first time anyone on the forum has used it. You've won FIRST place. Great use of it too. You cannot imagine how I've wanted to ask you about your island garden. I see you on the forum, but waited since most folks have had a slow spring startup. Great selections for your display. You have a unique public display location. If Empress Wu doesn't elicit comments from the neighbors, nothing can. She is impressive....See More"Broad" Band
Comments (8)I think they make a very nice combo! Reverse coloration, one with ripples one without. Very nice! I will need to add that to my garden. Thanks for enabling! Margaret...See MoreHosta Broad Band
Comments (13)I am super late to this thread, but I acquired Broad Band this year from Hallson. My decision to purchase was based solely off the display picture they use on the website. For some reason that one leaf just made me think WINNER ! So naturally, being the obsessive compulsive I began researching it. Jim is right, it is not registered and it seems that Ron is keeping Mom and Dad a secret ⦠shhhh !! I even emailed Chris to see if he knew anything about the genetics. He said he didnâÂÂt, but that Ron has a sort of numbering system for his various generations of crosses that he then crosses with other crosses and then crosses some more. So even if we knew the parents, it would be something like (R95 x B4954) x SOL521478 The margin is thinner in immature plants. It starts out a bright yellow and then slowly fades to a creamy, almost bleach white by the end of the season. The thing that caught my eye this year was the more pronounced heart shaped leaves and the crisp edge of the lines between where the middle green meets the edge variegation. In my opinion this one is going to be absolutely stunning at maturity, but it might take some time to get there. IâÂÂm not sure that it is a slow grower, but rather I think slower to mature into that wide band we see in the pics. I will disagree with Jim though on it being similar to Earth Angel. The colors are more vibrant on BB and the leaf shape and thickness are different. EA has a much thicker and more oval rounded leaf, where BB has a thinner more heart shaped leaf. The margin on EA is softer and blends into the leaf more than BB, which is a very crisp variegation. BB also has a sheen to the leaves that EA doesnâÂÂt. But donâÂÂt let me talk you into buying one . . . nudge nudge :) Ludi Broad Band - 05/30/2013 Broad Band - 07/27/2013...See MoreBroad Band
Comments (7)Makes me wonder if some dormant eyes come up prematurely. I've got a GE, for example that came up with about 11 pips, of different sizes. I really think the smaller pips came up prematurely! Or the plant put on some good growth in the summer before going dormant. Last year Golden Sunburst emerged with some large and smaller pips which resulted in some large leaves mixed in with small ones. This year all leaves are uniform in size. I'll bet your hosta will be normal next year, DD... it's this year that will keep us guessing. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge about this?...See Morebkay2000
