Can you read the following and tell me how you understand it. Thanks!

How does ACN Digital Phone Service work?

When you pick up your telephone, the ACN Digital Phone Service phone adapter converts your voice into data and sends it through the Internet. Our network sends the call where you want it and translates it back into voice. That means when the person you're calling picks up their telephone, it sounds just the same as any other call. When someone calls you, they dial your telephone number, your phone rings, and all you have to do is pick up and answer it.

Now the way I understand it is that your conversation is sent as data through the internet which can be acquired from anybody. What happens to the data once it's translated back into voice??

Does anybody have one of these? Do you or have you had any problems with it?

Khandi, I have digital phone service through Comcast. It works fine and I don't think it's any more insecure than any other phone service. The only problem I have is when the system goes down I lose TV, internet and the phone but this has only happened once in the 15 months I've had it and it was only for a few hours on a rainy Saturday or I would never have known. I looked up ACN and as far as I know the service is the same.

My neighbor has Wide Open West's digital phone and it seems to work the same as regular phone except for the fact that if cable goes out you have no phone service. I guess that is not a problem if you have a cell phone.

Most are powered only by an AC adapter, but I've heard there are a few that also have battery power,. Check the specs on any frame you are interested in: many of them can handle 100-240V AC input, which means you would not need to buy a special transformer to make it work in England, just a couple dollar adapter plug to allow the U.S.-style plug to mate with a British receptacle. (See the link below for a kit with several adapters; this would handle whatever you encountered in England.) The most important thing to me is the screen resolution: some of the less expensive ones have pretty low resolution and the pictures look grainy. If it were me, I'd pick one with the best resolution I could afford, and just get a plug adapter. Here is a link that might be useful: Plug adapter kit

It took over 3 wks. to get my 2 coupons (they only issue 2). Both DD & I need the converter box as both our TV's are old & we don't have cable. They give you 3 months in which to purchase the box & nearby Wal-Marts, Radio Shacks & K-Marts carry it. The only question I have is about the remote, but I guess since they provide one with the box, you don't need the one that came with your TV. I can't seem to get anyone on the phone to answer this question so I thought I'd put it on the KT because you guys are so good about knowing all this stuff.

Thanks for all your help. From internet search and replies on forums I thought I might do this: 2 RG6 cable and 1 CAT5E cable in the 3 locations I plan on putting television. I was told that you want 2 cable outlets for satelite TIVO abilities and a phone line for "updating" Sound right? I'd add RG6 cable outlet and CAT5E phone outlet to all the locations I think I'd put a computer, basically one pair in each room. Then I'd have everything "homerun" to one location. Sound Okay? Eric Afterthought: Do cable companies offer Basic Basic cable of just the 5 or 6 major channels (ie CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS ...) We're not big 50-60 channel tv fans, but we like our basic tv. We got 5 or 6 basic cable channel in Charleston, SC for 10 buck a month. Here in Monterey, CA they don't offer it, so we are just using the antenna. We're building a house and moving to the Memphis, TN (Arlington, TN) area next. I'm in the Navy, but we're hoping to settle down - so we want to build our house "right."

Actually, every prepaid phone I've dealt with you have to start with a "new" number on the prepaid phone. You can then port a different number to it if you want. Tip: If using Tracfone, activate the phone online and you'll get a few extra minutes. They may still have the thing going where you can get a few minutes too for registering an email address against the phone. Look for bonus codes to add minutes or time when adding time. You can get a lot more minutes for your money. And a double minutes for life card is about $25 if your phone doesn't have that on it.

One of my neighbors has digital phone service and has commented that he is pretty happy with it, with one exception. THere is no 911 service available if you call in on it. Fortunately, his 911 call was for teens having a too loud party (nothing life threatening), but he was not able to complete the call. WHen he investigated further, it seems most internet phone companies cannot support 911 emergency service.

You need to double check the 911 for your area. Usually it's just the "enhanced" 911 that isn't available..In other words you dial 911..and as soon as the line is picked up, your location comes up on the screen..so that if you couldn't "get your address" out..it's already available to dispatch.
You can call the dispatch desk at your local PD, and find out. ~call the dispatch number not 911 to ask questions. :o)
Our area doesn't support enhanced on Cable phone, so I won't switch. I've had to use 911 a few times in my childrens lives..I like the fact that they INSTANTLY know the location of the call, and are already having the emergency services on their way before I can even get all of what is wrong out.
