Desktop Icon question...

Some of my desktop shortcuts have little icons pertaining to whatever site it goes with. This one has the Gardenweb leaf,,but some sites just show an Internet exp.icon. Is there a way to change them, and why do some have specific ones and others just the explorer ones?

You can right click the icon/ properties/ customize, change icon, but you'll be limited to the selection.

What you are really talking about are "favicons" which come from the different websites. Most Favorites or Bookmarked urls have favicons, but it depends on the website, some have them and some don't.

Thanks Randy but it wont work for me...another box comes up that says BROWSE and it has hundreds of listings in it and I have no clue what to do with that...ty anyway

When you hide your desktop icons to enjoy the wallpaper you still have access (better access in my opinion) by clicking the 2 small right facing chevrons just to the left of your clock on the taskbar. Icons cluttering up the desktop require the user to iconise any open window for them to be used, using the chevrons you need close no window.

Thanks, that's were I was when the Icon became unresponsive and I decided to "exit" it and post here. I had done a properties and gave it only a quick look, seeing something (poor memory) about desktop... then I click (left) on the icon and a small display/dialog box came up showing some thermometer style meters with a horizontal orientation. I couldn't get the display to disappear so I clicked the "exit" button. I have Firefox and Thunderbird and they try to connect add-ons at every update, it seems. I try to cancel the add-ons, I have enough trouble trying to remember all the features of the core application.

There's no need to go to Control Panel When looking at the desktop, do a right click Then left click on View Your choice is Large, Medium, Small Icons.

Does this mean you cannot move your mouse pointer to the icon in order to click on it?....or..... Does this mean that you can click on an icon but nothing happens?

You shouldn't have to browse, there should be pictures of a 100 or so icons showing in the box, just click an icon you like, then ok.

Randy, I did find the icons but they wont work. I click ok and it still shows Im using IE and they wont change.AAARGH!!

Caroline, I use Internet Explorer as my browser, and my operating system is Windows XP Pro.

The default location for the icon for a new shortcut is this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\url.dll

That's where you end up with the icon that looks just like the Internet Explorer icon.

You already know how to get to the point where you can change the icon, so click on "Browse" to change locations and then go to:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll

There are a lot of icons to choose from in that dll.

I saw them all...the problem is I click on one and on ok , but it doesnt change the icon. Its still IE icon.

If the icons where not always like this, you may need to rebuild the icons using Tweak UI

After downloading and installing, it can be found in All Programs/ Powertoys for Windows XP

Caroline, after you find an icon that you like and you click on it once to highlight it, then you click on "OK," that will take you back to the shortcut properties window -- you'll need to click on "Apply" -- that should make it stick.

I was able to change some of them,,,evidently some cant be changed,as I get a whole different screen on some when I right click on them,,,but its better,at least I have some pretty ones besides the IE ones all over

I figured out a way...had to put everything in folders first...
