be very careful where you get those, many of the sites that offer free icons and wallpaper and stuff like that are just full of malware. Scan them well with all your security programs before you ever open them on your pc.

I'm going to give you some advice, which you may not appreciate. Unless you are pretty computer savvy, you can mess up your computer trying this because icons are located in an important system folder. Some people use certain software programs to help with this process, but I don't want to recommend anything here. In addition, I agree with ravencajun: many icons available for download come from sites that may infect your computer with malware, so you would have to carefully scan whatever you downloaded.

All-in-all, I don't think it's worth the trouble, but maybe someone else here will be less neurotic than I am and give you the steps.

Maybee I don't remember how I changed icons on Xp, but I know I did change them I didn't do it the way you do, I did it in display somewhere. You might try googling "change desktop icons in XP". As for saving them I save them to the desktop, open them with Irfanview save them as ICO, to a new folder. Then when you find out where to change them, just browse to the icon folder. As far as getting malware from the site that is entirely possible, but my MS Security Essentials scans the downloads and would warn me if it was infected. You don't have to go into a system folder to do this. Your icon folder would be somthing you set up. Mine are in my documents, then in my graphics folder. I personally think it is worth it, to have a neat desktop. It gives me something to learn and do. The red roses are my icons, I keep them it the orig order so I know what they are. The folders at the top are temporary things I am working on.

there are many types of malware, and trojans, that MSE will not catch which is why so many use malwarebytes so never count on one program to be your saving grace. And if it happens to be brand new could be that nothing would have definitions for it yet.

Just curious, why "sans quotes"?

The quotes are used to identify the specific keyword(s) I am referring to. They are not necessary for the search. Since the user is already having a concern I don't want to create any unnecessary confusion which may compound the grief.

Since I posted to this thread I have learned to make my own icons, I do not have to go online to search exposing my self to these terrible dangers out there. I didn't find a lot of icons anyway. I take a wallpaper using Irfanview, find an object in the picture and crop it and save it as window icon or I reduce the size of the original wallpaper to 85. This is what I end up with. In this case I reduced the orig wallpaper to an icon size because I couldn't find an item that was easy to crop.

Here is another example, I cropped one of the smilie faces and made the icon.

You probably wouldn't want to see my plain old black wallpaperless desktop or the gob of icons spread around it. :)
